RE: CG's around Alamogordo/White Sands

We are going 2nd of April so we can go to the Trinity site which is only open 2 Saturdays per year.
FYI: Trinity site is closer to Socorro than Alamagordo. They run a bus from Alamagordo across WS Missile Range to Trinity. It is interesting country but it is a much shorter drive from Socorro. Alamgordo Chamber of Commerce does a better job than Socorro promoting the tour. WSMR link

RE: water pressure regulators

The best solution is to get a 1/2" or 3/4" brass water pressure regulator and put it inside the coach, after your water inlet. You never have to worry about your water pressure after you install this regulator.
Installing it inside means you worry about blowing out your incoming hose. Install it at the spigot and protect your hose and RV. If you are worried about theft, chain it to the pipe.

RE: Auxiliary Gasoline Tanks

I carry three 5 gal cans and never have had to use them on a trip.
A source for low cost diesel tanks is your local scrap metal dealer. My local guy has 4-5 fuel tanks off of trucks around the yard all the time that he will sell for the price of the steel. Plus they still have all the sending units, wires, etc attached. If I thought I really needed an extra tank I would ask the metal dealer to keep an eye out for one of the 150 gallon ones from a semi. He has a couple of hundred 55 gal steel drums he sells for $4 each if you wanted to make your own.

RE: Denver to LA

Google Maps is your friend. It will even tell you what RV parks are in an area.
To give some prespective. Your trip is like driving from London to Naples and trying to decide what is worth seeing. Side trip to Paris (Grand Canyon)? Go via Bavaria (New Mexico)? I would head to Rocky Mtn Nat Park first, then down to Santa Fe, across to Grand Canyon, up to Utah, then back down to LA. I would stay off the interstate and figuire on 5 driving days and 5 sight seeing days with the extra days (if any) spent in LA. LA area has enough attractions for all 10 days.

RE: Best cell service: western us road trip

We had AT&T in Ca. When we moved to NM we changed to Verizon for the better coverage. Our ATT phone could not connect over vast areas of I-10, I-25, and I-40. Verizon has a dead zone in the east central part of the state around Ft Sumner. Otherwise it keeps us connected everywhere from Florida to CA, north to Idaho, east to Minnisota, and South to Zapata, TX

RE: Shackle Flip

I just finished going from Under to Over slung springs using the Dexter Axle kit. No real problems and you do not need to weld anything. You can weld it if you want to, but the kit has bolts that are used to positon the new axle/spring saddle and if you follow the instructions you cannot go wrong, nor can it move.
Dextre recommends adding spring stops but I think my shocks perform that function well enough. You may also have to lengthen your brake wires and get longer shock absorbers, if you have shocks. If you do need new shocks, the Monroe catalog lists shocks by length and by attachment type. Very useful info.
One tip, If you have a 4.5 inch cut off blade on a side grinder it speeds things up to cut the U bolts.

RE: SD License requirements change New Year's Eve

From a Dec 19 Wash. Post article "Dept of Home. Sec. said 46 states are not in compliance with the requirements, and 13 have passed laws refusing to participate." (NM is one) The article also points out that the feds have extended the deadline past Dec 31. The act is likely to be repealed and a less expensive and invasive program adopted.

RE: Converter Problem

If you do end up removing the converter's cover, please disconnect the shore power first.
Better to unplug the converter and disconnect the 12V wires before trying to remove the cover.
Another vote for disconnect the batteries and see if the converter keeps the 12V lights working bright. As was posted earlier, the fan is a sign it is working hard for some reason.

RE: First 5th wheel- What things will I need to get started?

Another vote for starting with minimums. Cell phone, credit card, spare tire and tools to change the tire for the first trip.
I did not buy sewer hose until I had been out for a week. The rental I had did not have one. That is when I learned about heavy duty vs leak-a-lot hose and connectors.
Have fun, all the gadgets are like fishing lures, designed to attract fishermen not fish.

RE: Traveling from CA to FL - Which route gives best Adventures

Go to the AZ, NM, TX, LA, MS, AL, and FL tourist bureau web sites and ask them to send you their packets. Use US/State Highways instead of Interstates. Like use US 90 From Van Horn to San Antonio for example and see Marfa, Big Bend, Langtry, Amistad Lake, Cuidad Acuna, etc.

RE: Dental work

The main dentist in polomas is Dr. Fierro, has his own pharmacy and a hotel
Not to try to scare anyone, but Dr Fierro was kidnapped around the 30th of November. I was getting some peridontal dental work done at another Dentist's -"Dr Cordova of American Dental Care behind the Pink store- two days after the kidnapping and they were talking about it. I have not heard if he is ok or not. No more stories since 12 Dec when he was reported to still be in the kidnappers hands. I have been back twice since then without hearing any more news.
Fierro's clinic is nice but most of the fillings are performed by other dentists in the clinic and it is a further walk from the border. I preferr Mendoza brothers dentists for fillings and quick good work. They are to the right after crossing the border. For crowns or surgery I go to American Dental Care. I have been going to Palomas for 4 years and have no complaints except for one dentist in Fierros clinic hit a nerve before giving me pain killer. My dental insurance even pays most of the bill.
BTW: Juarez has been placed "off limits" off and on for years to military members for various reasons. Currently it is the murder rate.

RE: Useing Landing Gear to lift onto jack stands?

Well, I put it up on the jack stands today. I did it by lowering the landing gear, putting jack stands under rear and then lifting front end up to level. It raised all four tires off the ground and no problems. I added jack stands in the front and some more support to the rear just for good measure. Now I just have to wait for the Over/Under slung kit to get here. I did find one of my shock absorber bolts had been bent at some time in the past, but I was going to replace all 4 of them anyway.

RE: not level towing, options?

Weigh the axles first. Keep your eye on the target=You should be trying to equalize the load on the axles, while maintaining clearance above the bed rails, not trying to get the nose level.

RE: Slow page loading

I have the same problem on my Linux machine running Mozilla browser. I thought it was related to Linux but I guess not. My xp machine with Mozilla opens fast. Other web sites open fast on the Linux machine so I guess it is this site is optimized for windows. Double clicking does seem to speed things up.

RE: What is Hwy 54-70 like thru New Mexico??

If the weather is bad on 54 it will be bad on I-40 and 60 also. 54 to 70 is shorter, and has less traffic. Mostly wide two lane with wide shoulders, except for a section or two between Corona and Carrizozo, where the shoulders are less than a car width. San Augustine Pass (10mi east of Las Cruces) is a long (10 miles) gradual climb up and down. Watch your speed in Organ (50 mph just after you come off the crest) as it has been heavily patrolled lately. Buy your fuel in Tucumcarri it is cheaper than Santa Rosa and then try to make it to Alamagordo or Las Cruces for fuel.

RE: Bakersfield to Palm Springs, Ca

I use 14 down to exit 30 and take the Pearblossom Hwy around Palmdale to 138. Only a couple of lights and no heavy traffic. I only use 138 if I am pulling the RV. It is to slow if you are in a car.

RE: Useing Landing Gear to lift onto jack stands?

Thanks for the thoughts.
DraginRat I too have used this technique to work on my boat axles and it worked fine. However, that was a home made trailer that was overbuilt for the 2500lb boat riding on it. I will probably still try it but keep an ear tuned to the sound of the motor on the jacks.
Mapguy thanks for the link. I have read that before but it did not turn up in my "axle flip" search. I will not be doing anything beyond the over slung kit install. I do have some good (rail road ties) cribbing I can use as an added comfort level and I am a frequent shopper at Harbor Freight :)
Pinesman, sounds like a good technique but did you have any problems due to the axle only being free on one end? I am guessing the axle was supported in place, and only moved vertically, while you were working on relocating the springs, hanger, etc.
If I have a disaster next week I will let you all know.
Thanks again to all, Bob

Useing Landing Gear to lift onto jack stands?

Next week I will be lifting the 5w to install Dexter Under/over slung kit (flipping axles). I am thinking about lowering the front end as low as possible, putting jack stands behind the wheels and then using the landing gear to raise the wheels off the ground, before installing front jack stands. I have 7,000lb landing gear legs and a 10,000lb trailer so I expect the legs will be able to do the work.
It seems relatively simple and a lot easier than using jacks on the frame but I am a little concerned about using the jack stand against the frame as a pivot point for the trailer lift.
I am already considered using cribbing instead of jack stands on the back portion of the frame. I need to have enough room between the axles and the supports to move the axles around after they are loose.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks, Bob

RE: inverter location

Disconnect battery, turn on every 12v light, plug in some 12V appliances and wait for the fan to start blowing. Follow the sound to the inverter.
BTW: mine has a mesh grill in front of it and if you have a mesh grill under a cabinet or at floor level on a wall, that is most likely where it is.

RE: Lokoking for route and stop/activity suggestions

I guess you have a fast motorhome/van. You must average 550 mi per day more or less going and coming. Even if you average 70mph (unlikely and illegal in CA) each days drive, without stops, is 8 hours and the sun only shines for 9-10 hours, SOooo I think you will get to visit the campground attractions and that is about all you have time for.
I would figure out where I am stopping each night and plan from there. If you give people a list of towns and how long you intend to have free time there, you will get better suggestions.
