RE: Trip to Alaska

I've done Anchorage to seattle in 3.5 days, I was in car alone and stopped to pee and eat and get gas and slept in a tent stopping at about 10:00pm and back on the road at 8:00 am....I wasn't making the trek for the Canada part though I was trying to get to the lower 48 in a short amount of time.

RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

Wow that is quite tye list. Ill be in Alaska this summer too but I'm also here all winter as well. If you see an old beat up Itasca rolling down the road with a missing nose hatch that is me. If I'm going towards Tok or back from Tok at the end of May I'll likely be towing a BMW behind me.

RE: Length of Stay in Alaska

I wouldn't worry about it. My in-laws rented a house here since they spend 4-5 months a year here right now helping us out with the kids, but they reside in Texas. They bought a car here and registered it here but have TX DL with no issues from DMV. Apparently it is fairly common to do that. They are not residents here and therefore do not need a AK DL like I do since I'm a resident and live here 12 months a year. If they would have driven a car up here, instead of buying one here, they would not have had to register it here since they do not live here full time and claim residency in another state.

RE: 2015 trip to the Arctic Circle

I've never driven above the circle, but I have spent lots of time above the circle in western Alaksa, it always amazed me seeing the sun go in a circle around the sky, and then the realization it was 1 am and I had to be to work at 8:00am....
It's also amazing in Feb. when you see a glow in the south for about 10 mins at 1 pm and then it gets dark again....
If you don't want to drive above the circle you can always take this route, it's easier on the tires for sure....

That was in Bethel about 10 years ago, getting ready to go up the Kuskokwim River to who knows where, I thought this is one of those only in Alaska moments so I took a picture.

RE: Trip to Alaska 2013

Verizon will be in Alaska very soon, They are currently constructing a new building here in Anchorage to house their local offices. My parents use Verizon when they visit and have no issues with it up here. They actually have had signal along the highway in places where my ATT phone had no signal.

RE: Class A???

We have a class A, it's a 27 ft. 1978 Itasca but I paid $2400 for it and has been remodeled at some point with laminate floors and new cushions. It's not pretty, and I have spent a bit fixing things on the inside but we like it, and it didn't break the bank and I don't have any monthly payments......
I don't feel bad at all at leaving it parked most of the time, most of trips are short about 700 miles round trip, and being old I don't worry so much about tracking in dirt or fish guts....
It gets used alot in the winter, the kids and I go "camping" in the front yard, I can keep it warm in there even at -20....
You don't need to get a fancy expensive class A to go out and have a good time especially if you aren't going very far. If I was going farther I'd probably want something a bit nicer for long treks.

RE: Where to get 2011 up Mustang Tow Brackets??

I have a 98 BMW M3 I tow behind mine on a tow dolly for now. Im in the same boat as you mine can be towed 4 down, but I imagine the base plate plus the gear would be tough to to do with low clearance. I'd love to tow something else but they won't let me race a 4x4 since most of them are prone to tipping over on an auto-x course....
I hope to obtain a trailer since any newer M3 with 6 speeds and many other modern cars with manuals cannot be flat towed or towed two down.

RE: Sure this has been asked before But....here goes

A great campground that is not a gravel lot is a place called Tolsona Wilderness campground just on the Anchorage side of Glennallen. It is a few miles off the highway but is in the woods and has w/e with a dump station in the campground.

RE: Potable Water

Most of the Holiday gas stations in Anchorage have a dump station and potable water faucet. The holiday on Old Seward & O'malley is set up well for rv dumping, propane filling etc....

RE: Clamming in Ninilchik

Theclam gun is just a metal tube with a T handle on the top with an air hole in the handle you jab the gun down in the sand cover the air hole with your finger and pull up the column of sand and if you are fast eniugh the clam will be trapped in the sand and won't have gone deeper.
We disvered that in a pinch it makes a good cheater bar for getting lug nuts loose on a flat tire on the rv...

RE: iPad as GPS

I have a 7 inch wifi only android device and it has a built in GPS. My Ipad does not. I use a program called sygic on mine for offline maps since up here you loose cell signal a few miles out of town. I keep hoping they will make a 7 inch ipad....

RE: RV Camping in Soldotna

I'll be staying at Diamond M tues-sun next week. If they are booked up and you can survive without hookups you can camp in the Lama pasture and still have access to a dump station clubhouse etc...I'll be off in the pasture unless someone else cancels (I failed to book far enough ahead of time). It looks like the fish are getting slightly better this week, I hope they come in before I stand out in the ocean all day hoping to catch a few dozen of them.

RE: RV Camping in Soldotna

If your trying to get a campground in the next two weeks in kenai/soldotna with hookups its tough. Half of Anchorage will be down there dipnetting (including me) for the next several weeks. We did not decide on staying ina campgroundnuntill last minute and there was nothing available anywhere for next week with hook ups. Next year ill reserve way ahead of time....

RE: Replacing my Thetford Aqua Magic IV Toilet.

I had a broken toilet in my rv but it was so old they did not make parts to fix it other than the entire flush assembly which cost almost as much as a whole new toilet. So I spent a little extra and got the dometic traveler china potty. Way nicer than the plastic toilet. My wife really likes it. So if you do replace it consider getting china.

RE: Sleeping Arrangements for Young Kids

In our 24 ft c the baby went in the pack and play up in the front and my son who was 3 went on the dinnette or the overhead cab. Didn't have to worry about falling off since the rig had the ladder that stored on the overhead edge so it made a nice barrier to keep him in. Now my 3 year old daughter and 5 year old son sleep on the dinette together. I got a double air matress set it on the not quite double size dinnette and then built 2 sets of L shaped stands out of PVC and put that under the matress that hangs off so there is enough room for the kids to sleep and enough aisle left to get by them if I'm out side. I still have an old narrow aisled rig. The nice thing is i pull tye pvc legs apart and store them in the dinnette bench in the day time.

RE: Whats your toad

I on occasion tow a 98 BMW M3 sedan on a dolly. I have to remove the bumper to tow it on the dolly since its so low and my dolly is old...
I get about 4 miles to the gallon but then again I'm running wide open throttle at 120 mph on an airport runway during a highnspeed time trial between the wheel to wheel races.
I would love to tow it flat but i think the base plate would be dragging the ground if anyone even made one for it.

RE: Wobbly Table - Modified Base Cone Fix!

My friend just solved this in his rv by converting the table to a wall mount with a leg at the end of the table. Now its solid and still can come apart to use the dinette as a bed. He bought a conversion kit at the local rv store.
This kit of course wont work if your wobbly table doesn't sit next to a wall.

RE: Is Alaska biggest tourist trap?

Food costs to get heremare about 10% higher than down there it raises the price of food, but thanks to big box stores alot of prices are actually cheaper thwn the lower48. Best buy will price match their own website or even walmarts prices, so we can get things at the same price as down there plus we have no tax....
The average price of a house is $350,000 and is around 2000 square feet on on a 10k sqft lot....
Other things like cars and rvs are way marked up since it's spendy to get them here.
As far as tourist traps go anyone ever been to muckluk land in Tok? It's always closed when I go there I'm kinda curious what that place is all about....
We also have Alaska Land in Fairbanks, I heard it closed though I haven't been to fairbanks in about 5 years...
The musk ox farm in palmer, the reindeer farm in butte, Wolf country usa in Palmer, The native, cultureal center here in Anchorage(I like this one though) , I'm sure there are more....
Oh and gas dropped 4 cents last night it is now 3.95 In anchorage....so 3.85 with a FredMeyer card at shell or Freddy stations.

RE: Had someone ask how much my coach cost me!!!

I don't mind telling people, but i paid $2500 for mine. I also tell them a 34 year old cheap rv means you have to be good at fixing and upgrading since after 34 years not everything always works right...;people are surprised you can a decent vintage rv for cheap.
I did have to add a tv, replace the toilet, instal new faucets and shower head, reseal the roof, install a new stereo, replace a roof vent, install an inverter, replace cabinet latches, repair the awning mount, and my widshield wipers still don't work, but i paid cash for it and enjoy fixing it up.
