RE: Sacramento

Very little known spot - Rancho Seco Recreational Area. Look it up in RVParkReviews in the town of Herald which is not far from Mather AFB about 15-20 minutes from Sacto.

RE: Fruita Campground and Palisade State Park

Fruita in Capitol Reef is a favorite spot. It is an oasis in the red rock desert of this national park. many trees, deer, fruit orchards (pick your own in season), lots of pioneer history, river access and reasonable room and level sites. Inexpensive but no hookups. Basic facilities & you need to go into town to buy a shower. Extraordinary hiking opportunities and a great base camp for more extensive trips to the mountains, Lake Powell or Cathedral Valley.
Palisades is a pretty little park in Sterling near Manti. There is a terrific golf course there - really good and inexpensive! Also first class ATV access to the skyline trail and via six mile canyon. ATV rentals available in town. Palisades has a couple of sections, 2 with FHU. There are also non-hookup spots surrounding the grassy areas adjacent to the lake. Lake is small but stocked and fisher folk like it a lot; no motorboats allowed. Canoe, paddle and row boats available for rent. Very, very popular with families in season and rezzies are a good idea, especially for an FHU site. Sold out around the Utah July 24 holiday (Pioneer Day) and when the LDS temple at Manti has its annual play.

RE: best campgrunds from ca to montana

I, too, would recommend RVparkreviews for a good overview of what's available. I'd like to help you with the St. George area since I live in the vicinity but I do not know how to interpret what you may feel are "the best campgrounds." We have several state parks nearby, resort facilities, homey & family run rv parks and some pretty good boondock sites. Any of these could be "the best" for someone, it all depends on what you like. Maybe after you've reviewed the choices in the area we could be more helpful in narrowing down the options.

Yup - the above advice is solid.
One thing for sure, you won't feel any burning desire to stop and take photos of the scenery very often. hehehe.

RE: Phoenix to St. George, Utah

Jim~
There is often snow on Alt 89 in March. Remember that Alt 89 takes you up over the plateau and gets pretty high with some twists and turns. You could stay on 89 through Page as an alternative. While I think Alt 89 is the prettier route and usually not a problem you may find it challenging at that time of year. Just a thought.

RE: Snow Canyon State Park- Utah

Snow Canyon hook ups sites are incredibly tight. Skip 'em if you can and go without services.
In March you need not worry about extremes of heat or cold, Wolfman. Aveerage temps range is 41 low to 67 high, mean temp is 57.

RE: Sand Hollow State Park in Dec???

Here's some info for you:
Sand Hollow Info
Quail Creek Info
Both are nice spots. As others have noted there are some FHUs at Sand Hollow. Quail doesn't offer hookups but all sites have a nice lake view and sometimes it is a bit less windy and dusty; Sand Hollow is quite exposed. They're very close to each other so pluses or minuses on that count. From both it's just a quick hop up Route 9 to I-15 North and Cedar City.
There is a nice commercial park in Hurricane called Willowinds.
Willow Wind
The Leeds RV Park is very homey and down to earth. It's just north of Quail Lake.

RE: Zion Tunnel Length Restrictions Strictly Enforced

While obviously some folks have gotten by being over 50', the folks are generally very strict about this restriction. The concern isn't really the tunnel itself but the narrow and windy roads especially on the valley side where the switchbacks could cause an inexperienced driver of a long rig to swing too wide and then it's a long, long way down for the poor soul on the outside edge.

RE: Ventura CA to Cedar City, Utah......

Don~
Cedar City gets snow because of its altitude (+5000) but I-15 enroute to Cedar City is fairly low until about 25 miles from town where the freeway ascends from 2800 ft to over 5000 ft. Up to then snow is pretty unlikely although possible. So worst case is you'd likely have only a short drive on a very big interstate that is kept clear in anything short of a blizzard. Short answer - I wouldn't sweat it unless the weather service tells you a humongous storm is coming along at the time of your trip. The campgrounds at Cedar are not far from the I-15 exits and the streets are easy peesy.

RE: A new tire PSI question...before or after hooking up?

I never felt real confident on this tire pressure issue. Out in my neck of the woods, it might start out at 50 degrees at 8:00am but in a couple of hours the temperature will hit 90 degrees and maybe even go to triple digits for a couple of hours. I always put my 50 pounds in,per the tire sidewall but I always think that I'll be way over-inflated by lunch.
Is there a different rule for extreme temperature places like the desert for when am/afternoon temps can vary by 40 degrees or more?

RE: rv parks near Zion

Zion River is in Virgin, Utah so you'll have a 15-20 minute drive each time to visit the park itself or to go out for dinner in Springdale or Hurricane, etc.
On the other hand, there is excellent access to the Kolob reservoir and Cave Valley/Hop Valley areas of the park from Virgin. These places are generally not seen by the Zion visitor who focuses on the famous valley. The other advantage of the Zion River location is that it is closer to I-15 to head north or through Hurricane to 389 and 89 north, (assuming you cannot use the Zion Tunnel because of length restrictions).
I imagine the ghost town your wife seeks is Grafton which is accessed over Bridge Road in Rockville, about half way between Zion River and Springdale.
I'd also choose Watchman if it was up to me but I can appreciate many folks like the FHU and amenities of the commercial parks.
November is a pretty time of year. The animals come back, the crowds are gone and you can drive up the valley at your own pace instead of having to take a shuttle. Hiking is good then since it's cooler but take care if any freezing has occurred as the rock gets super slippery when wet or frosty.

RE: Zion Mt. Carmel Tunnel

The 50 foot restriction is strictly enforced. I suppose sometimes it's possible to slip by but don't count on it. Those folks can be ferocious about enforcement. Pleasant, but ferocious.

RE: China into RV's - Yeah

Doesn't anyone remember that 50 years ago, Made in Japan was a sure sign of cheap junk? I wouldn't buy any of today's Chinese junk but you can bet they're a force to be reckoned with for the future.
Exactly. We mocked Toyota and Datsun (Nissan) backed then. Later, we snorked about Kia and Hyundai. Of course, when cash for clunkers came out, we traded our Big 3 clunkers for Japanese and Korean cars.
Looking forward we have Chinese and Indian cars due to hit world markets and if history is any teacher, they will rapidly learn what the USA market wants and provide that to us.
Like it or hate it, chances are a Chinese RV could be super competitive in the US market but the Chinese may instead choose to build for their own billion person market and that domestic model may not work here.

RE: Lake Mead

You'll want to check your spots. Lake Mead is currently about 40% full, the lowest level in nearly 40 years. Some of the CG's are now closed. Some studies suggest the lake will actually be functionally dry by 2021. Don't know if that's true but it's plainly visible how low the lake level is. Here is a link to a graph:
