RE: Winterizing our home in the North

If your foundation is so poorly constructed that the surrounding ground can't freeze then you have a lot bigger problems than winterizing your house. You need to quit giving advice about what you don't know. A soil with a high moisture content will expand a lot during a long hard freeze, it will crack basements and foundations. In your area it might not get that cold that long, the soil might not hold water that well. If you have the right combination it will happen. Years ago I had a house where the cold cracked the foundation, it happened about 11 at night. I've heard houses creak and pop from the cold, nothing like that. It sounded like an explosion when it broke, I went out so see what happened. Bad advice you are giving, because you haven't heard of it or seen it you think it is a bunch of hooey, but I know it can happen. To the OP, no way I would let a house freeze hard over the winter if you are in a very cold climate. It will cost a few hundred $$ to keep minimal heat, but there is so much that can happen to everything from the house to the contents. If you can afford to spend the winter in a warm climate budget $300 or $400 to insure you don't loose something a lot more valuable. Most cottages are minimally furnished, not a lot to damage. Not so with a home where the contents aren't designed to freeze hard.

RE: how do I reshape a moulding

Is there a bending tool like an electrical conduit bender? or do you just start with a few screws and force it with hand pressure? There's tons of different benders from hand to hydraulic powered. But are you are going to spend from a few hundred to thousands of dollars to make a couple of bends? After you buy the bender you have to buy a die of the proper size, and that will probably be custom made. The only way to do it economically is by hand with the suggestions offered, it is done all the time building custom vehicles and making one off parts. You can try forcing it by hand, if it doesn't work you haven't lost anything. But you will have better luck if it has the basic correct form first.

RE: how do I reshape a moulding

From your description most likely it is extruded and formed on a bender to keep it from collapsing. The best you can do is flatten it, find something round about the size of the bend and reshape. The flange that holds the vinyl strip in place will collapse but with a little patience you will be able to lift it enough to insert the vinyl again. Work it a little at a time, aluminum is soft. Trying to do too much will leave points that are pretty obvious.

RE: How and where do I junk my 1977 Komfort Kraft

Metal recyclers don't generally want them because they are 90% wood and plastic. The cost to get the little metal isn't worth it. Kijiji or Craigslist free ads work well.

RE: How much is the cheapest way to dispose of an RV?

Craigslist. I had over 50 emails in less than 12 hours for a free pickup camper. Be prepared for a few pinheads, if you run into one, move on. There will be too many who will take it without being a big hassle to deal with those who want to be.

RE: Generator on its own battery

Can you set the inverter so it won't shut down until a lower voltage than the 12v generator start voltage?

RE: How tall is my motorhome?

Measuring is the only way to be accurate. Everything from tire height to suspension condition to weight will affect your height.

RE: Faulty E C M

What chassis? Are you sure the ECM is bad, not supply voltage, connector, etc.? I've bought ECMs for gassers off eBay for $45. There should be a part number and service number to identify the PROM, they must match. Diesels, you don't have a lot of options.

RE: Cracked motorbox cover

A piece of 3/8 or 1/2 plywood cut to follow the contours of the vertical surface will be a lot stronger. You could carpet over it, paint, varnish, etc. A large relatively thin and flat area of fiberglass has a lot of flex, even putting a couple of layers of mat over it won't last long. The angle reinforcement will concentrate the downward force to the bolt locations. Without large washers and reinforcement they will fail quickly.

RE: 1990 454 TBI HEI will engine cranks but no gas for start

I did check the fuel pressure, compression before I tore the engine in the pictures down. Fuel pressure was 13 psi. I don't know what you looked up for the regulator but if it was a rebuild kit that might not mean a lot. All they are is some gaskets and the diaphragm, the pressure is set by the spring, the rebuild parts could be common. As a matter of fact most kits I've seen have more parts you don't use than are used.

RE: 1990 454 TBI HEI will engine cranks but no gas for start

TBI was a mid year change in 1989 on the big block. The engine in the picture is a 1990. 350 and 454 both used the 220 TBI, different injectors. The 454 used a heater (you can see the coolant line below and between the TBI supply and return lines) under the throttle body that had a pattern similar to the Quadrajet. The manifold pictured would be a bolt up for a TBI without the heater.

The same engine with only the air cleaner removed. http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l139/reconstructor24/IMG_27131.jpg

RE: 1990 454 TBI HEI will engine cranks but no gas for start

Top of a 454 Chevy. No sender near the distributor, not even a port for a sender. Big block manifolds cover the valley front to back to the outside of the block. Maybe you are thinking of a small block or the port above the oil filter? http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l139/reconstructor24/IMG_27301.jpg The passenger side is the RH side. The oil pressure sender is on the LH side of the engine, near the front, just above the pan. If the ESC failed how is the engine firing? Possible, stranger things have happened but usually they will fail completely or run until hot then quit.

The oil pressure sender is on the left side towards the front of the block just above the pan.

RE: Transfer Switch

So how do you turn the post breakers off without going out? Why would you need to? The contacts break the connection to shore power once the generator starts as most ATS are wired. My motor home is plugged in all the time at home, I start the generator without turning off shore power.

The box will come off from the inside but the hoses are mounted from the outside, you have to work from both sides.

RE: 1989 Winne Chieftain Rear Frame Extension.

Is the body dropping with the frame, any wrinkles in the side walls as it drops? When you had it in the air did you look at the frame splice? If it was a simple butt weld that could be trouble, it really should have gussets, at least reinforcing plates. These should be bolted or plug welded to the frame and extension. Did you look at the hitch and mount? Get under the motor home with the trailer on the ball but no weight. Have someone lower it and watch what moves. Finding the problem shouldn't be hard.

RE: Cold Cathode fluorescents

OK, but I didn't catch the part in the OP that said he wanted to put up some ticky tack gaudy decorations. Because you can easily build them in or hide them nearly anywhere? Didn't catch that part either did you? To me built in or hidden doesn't equal a ticky tack gaudy decoration. I have used them for edge lighting of control panels, ambience lighting, under vehicles, night light types of lighting. This is an panel I made for a restoration. It was engraved from the rear, filled with white paint and edge lit. http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l139/reconstructor24/ControlPanel.jpg
