RE: Can you heat a Class B motorHome the sam way as a car.

How, exactly, do you think a car is heated? It isn't magic. Hot water generated by the running automobile engine is diverted to a heater radiator in the dash. Air is forced over it, and into the car. That sounds like pretty expensive heat, if the engine were being run just to heat the car. By tlhe way, every RV out there, be it, Class B, Class A, Class C, TT or 5th wheel, is heated the same way. If not on electric grid, it's either working off a generator, or using a propane heater. The goal of this would be avoid gasoline costs. It would cost more in gasoline to heat a small crummy looking camper van with a generator than to rent a 5000 square foot house per month. Connecting land to a power line has very high initial costs and solar panels are both ineffective with very high initial costs. RV parks with power lines charge as much rent as an apartment. So I thought that unless some genius figured out a way to stop you one should be able to heat a class b camper van the same way they heat a car. Can they? If not why would anyone buy a class-b camper van.

RE: Ultimate road trip

Your trip sounds great. I'm looking forward to my own "ultimate Road Trip" that will began in late February. It's going to be nice not having a date certain I have to be home to go back to work. Hey y'all This is the first time we've had a chance to post. We started out on April 5th from Melbourne Fl. Traveling in a Roadtrek 170. Took us 9 days to get out of florida....and another 13 days to get here in Fredericksburg Tx. We've gone 2016 miles, stayed at 11 different sites and traveled to 6 states. Just getting going good. We've stayed at national forests...state parks...municipal parks...military famcamps ...boondocked twice and finally a private park. The 170 is fantastic for what we are doing..we can go anywhere a car can go with no problem at all. The only time we are inside is if we are sleeping or the weather is too miserable. Did that once and decided to move on down the road to where the weather is better. Ha Ha. We did discover that the panel for the black tank lies. When it's empty, it will show empty and then an hour later it will show full...again..it lies!!!! Only issue so far but not gonna let it slow us down. BTW...thankyou to whoever it was that reminded me about the Walmart gift cards for gas. Don't know if it's everywhere but we are getting 10 cents off a gallon with the card...I'll take it". Also..the little flat tv antenna that sticks on the window is awesome. Picked it up at CW when we were getting ready for this trip. It was only$20.00 at the time but I see the price has climbed. We were getting 8 - 10 channels when the folks across from us got nothing with their outside one and we got stuff when our neighbors with sat got nothing. So this is some of the stuff we've learned so far...oh, and Florida has caverns..learned that too. Ou.r rt is a2006 and we are getting 14 1/2 to 16 mpg. We also should have listened to you about...bringing too much stuff....yep...did that too. But so far it's been a blast...met some wonderful people and old friends along the way..and got to see the beauty of this country up front and personal. Catch ya next time we have Internet.

RE: Question: Rts. US 35 and US 23 in Ohio

I've driven that route before. I'd do it again, for sure. The Ohio portion is great, and WV has been improving it's portion. Even the two lane portions are decent. Sometime in the next month, I’ll be driving to RV Wholesalers in Lakeview, Ohio, from my home in Richmond, Virginia, to pick up my new TT. This will be the first time I’ve driven west of Charleston, W.Va., and I’m looking forward to seeing parts of the country I’ve never seen before. Looking at my hand-held, full-color, flat-screened, analog GPS ( aka.-road map), I see the most direct route is I-64 to Charleston then up US 35N to Chillicothe, then US 23N to Columbus. I have a friend who is a retired Teamster. He said that is the route truckers used before interstates were completed. (Which explains why there are so many travel services to be had in the small town of Nitro, W.Va., on that route.) Has anyone taken this route between Columbus and Charleston? Thanks, Teach

RE: Trying to find a better way around Washington DC

Don't think I-66 is very hectic between I-81 and US17 south to Fredricksburg. In the suburbs of DC, I agree I-66 can be quite hectic, at any time of the day. When is your trip? Are you trying to drive straight through? 81 to 66 to 17 is a viable route however it takes you a bit out of the way and 66 can be hectic at times. I would leave PA at 9:00 A.M and try to sneak through rush hour 15/270/495/95 or 83/695/95 south/495/95. Or leave PA at 6:00 PM and get through DC after evening rush hour.

RE: Old style vs new style interiors

My biggest problem with the newer Class B's is the growing lack of storage space. My 1996 RT210 (not to be confused with the 210's made in the 2000's) has a total of 109 sq ft of storage. As far as I know, there are no late model B's that come close to that. In later years, I think the Class B manufacturers stopped stating how much storage they had, other that the general statement of "It has lots of storage".

RE: Overpriced Roadtreks

To me, there is quite a difference between extended travel and extended living. If I were snowbirding in Florida or Texas, I'd want a Class A. The added living space would come in handy for the "extended" living while snowbirding. On the other hand for extended travel which I plan to do once I retire, I wouldn't want a huge Class A. I'd want a Class B. Class B's can go anywhere and everywhere. You do not need to have a toad with you. And pretty much any campground, public or private, is available for use. Ahhh "best choice"? For whom by whom? For extended travel/living a B sucks compared to an A. If you like living in a broom closet with a tiny bed, bath and kitchen, sure. Truth is there is no one RIGHT answer that fits everybody and every use. I own both an A and a B and like them both and use them both, they each have advantages/disadvantages. But I wouldn't pay anywhere near new price for just a B. But then there are people living under overpasses and in the woods in pup tents so to each his own.

RE: Pleasure-Way Tops in Canadian Class B Sales

Another huge difference now, compared to just a decade ago is the value of the Canadian $ compared to the US$. I remember a time, not too long ago when the Canadian was worth about $0.75 vs the US $. Now they are basically of equal value, at least the last time I looked. That change in the Canadian $ added a lot of cost to a Canadian manufactured anything. I think one of the issues facing both PleasureWay and RoadTrek is higher labour rates in Canada, especially for skilled tradesmen. Saskatchewan (PleasureWay) is in the middle of an oil-boom where they are desperate for tradesmen and southern Ontario (RoadTrek) has plenty of competition for skilled workers too. The good thing is that there's another post on this board where everyone is talking about how RTs hold their value on resale.

RE: How many miles where on your used B?

This is a curiosity question? When you bought your used Class B how many miles did it have on it? I'm looking at one that has a 100k so I guess thats the reason for this question. Mine had 96K. It now has over 135K.

RE: New Orleans campgrounds

A group of us stayed at Pontchartrain Landing two years ago during New Years. We were there for the Sugar Bowl. I found it to be very nice. No question the ride in isn't picturesque since you're going through an industrial area. It sits on Lake Pontchartrain and one of the canals that runs over to the Mississippi. It's gated and I found the showers quite acceptable. The park also has the name of a cab company that will bring you from the French Quarter to the park for a flat fee per rider. If you have several folks, this isn't a bad way to get back either. If my school ever gets back to the Sugar Bowl, we would stay here again. Planning to spend a few days in New Orleans in the early spring. Looking for a convenient campground with a shuttle or an inexpensive taxi ride to downtown. Looked at KOA west and Ponchartrain Landing. KOA shuttle is once a day Ponchartrain is twice. RV park reviews of Ponchartrain don't sound too positive. Any other suggestions? We don't have a tow car. Would it pay to rent one?

RE: Class B storage vs small Class C

All Class B's built on Sprinter chassis' have little to no outside storage. Our 22' Coachman Class C had lots more exterior storage than our B - the B has zero exterior space. This was particularly obvious when I started to transfer stuff from the C to the B. What became immediately obvious was that we had been carrying a lot of stuff in the C that we never used. The B has enough room for what we need with space left over.

RE: It's Official! I'm Retiring!!

You lucky dog. In the parlance of my occupation, accounting, I still have 9 month end closing to go through before I'm through. For me, it's August 31,2013. I hate to wish my life away any faster, but I sure wish I could move up that retirement date. Enjoy your new found freedom. :D

RE: Where is everybody going for Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving Day, we'll be at my niece's house. Her DH loves to cook. The combined families will be there. On Friday morning, we leave for Blacksburg, VA for one last football RV weekend. Sunday morning, we will come home, and then prepare the TT for her long winter's sleep.

RE: Mersades Engine in other than Mersades Chassis

I would much prefer Freightliner badge to a Mercedes badge. On a truck, Freightliner is much "cooler". That said, I'd prefer a Mercedes star to the Dodge Ram. Just to be clear, Freightliner is owned by Daimler. I prefer the Freightliner identification, mostly because I like the look better. It doesn't hurt that I'm not inclined to show off either.

RE: Florida tolls

Would be nice if Florida converted to EZ-Pass. EZ-pass from up north and E-pass from Florida are not interchangeable. To obtain E-pass is easy as stated in previous posts. Many of the highways in FL you can stay in the travel lanes and don't even have to slow down for tolls. We call them fly by lanes. These really save gas and time.

RE: Stabilizers During Hurricane

Ships go out to sea in a hurricane, maybe we should go to a campground! Only if the campground is out of harms way. Navy ships that leave base will plot a course that takes the ship away from the approaching storm track as quickly as possible, and after clearing the potential storm track, assuming it's a hurricane, then turn south.

RE: Toll Roads Virginia

Has anyone heard anything further about the planned toll roads in Virginia? Have they been implemented yet? Don't mind the tolls if they are reasonable. Hate the slowdown and the traffic congestion. The state is still working on putting up a toll on I-95 down in the county just north of Greenville which is next to North Carolina. Obviously, the folks down there are fighting it, and many of the counties that I-95 runs through are siding with that county. What the Commonwealth is proposing is to put up a single toll booth in that southern VA county, which happens to be a rural and less economically healthy county. I've noticed the Commonwealth hasn't proposed a toll plaza for the wealthier counties in the northern part of the state. I don't think a final decision on that proposal is imminent yet.
