RE: Changing Dr Lic and address question

Three main states for fulltimers - Florida, South Dakota, and Texas - all have no state income tax, low registration fees, ease for becoming residents, and good mail forwarding services. Lots of other questions go into determining which state is right for you. Barb

RE: Vegas or Henderson

Go to Needles, California. 1 1/2 hour south of Vegas. Parks are 300/mo and lots of golf. very cheap after 1:00 in the afternoon. You have to be kidding. Needles is not the place I would spend anymore than one or two nights on the way to somewhere else. Bullhead City/Laughlin would be better, or go down to Lake Havasu City. Barb

RE: Domestic side by side check light - help!

Do you have a LP monitor that has a shutoff sequence that might be tripped? Had a chair that pushed the test button on ours. That faint smell might be enough to trip the monitor and it shuts off the propane to the fright. Barb

RE: Cummins Service??

There isn't a Coach Care facility in Las Vegas (there is on in Sparks, just off of I-80), only a Cummins service facility that does mostly trucks and might work on the engines of MHs but usually do nothing else. The radiator isn't part of the engine, it is designed by the chassis manufacturer. Most Coach Care facilities will do flushing, etc., but not all. It is a question of it being harder to work on coaches than the big trucks that is their main business, so they often just don't want to get involved in doing that. Sort of depends upon how busy they are, how experienced their help is, etc. Barb

RE: Medicare Advantage for Full Timers?

It's my understanding that Medicare Advantage plans are limited to specific areas. Therefore I don't see how you could use one across the US. donn0128 suggestion is the way to go, however I think that would increase your out of pocket costs not reduce them. From the Medicare site: "You can generally join a Medicare Advantage Plan if: You live in the service area of the plan you want to join. The plan can give you more information about its service area. If you live in another state for part of the year, check to see if the plan will cover you there." I have a medicare advantage program and it is good for all 50 states! The statement that these plans are only local is misleading and incorrect! Check out all of the available plans. Each, I believe provides a nationwide list of where it is in effect. Yes, you will be covered for an emergency when traveling, but if they find out you are out of their region for more than XXX number of days (each plan is different) they can deny benefits. And your primary physician has to be in their region and be a part of their coverage group. Some are very picky, some are not. Important to read all of the teeny, tiny, fine print to make sure you know what will and won't be covered. Barb

RE: Questions for "half-timers"

My wife and I had planned what we called our "trip of a lifetime" and have been traveling in our 29 foot travel trailer for 6 1/2 months. We are currently finishing our trip and heading west back to Utah. Please don't misunderstand what I will tell you-we have had a great time and have seen almost everything we have wanted to see. I think between this trip and previous travel we are still about 5 or so states short. After this trip we feel that fulltiming would not be for us. Some campgrounds are great...some are not so great. We were in a park where a spouse had to go into the hospital for a knee replacement. Their beautiful class A had three steps just to get in to it. After dealing with this situation in our family, he is in for a rough go of it just to get in to the RV. It's great to have a home to go back to, and a appreciating asset and not a depreciating one. I know there are those that feel differently and you will probably hear from them as well. Good luck on whatever you decide. Good lord, you must be exhausted. You never got out of vacation mode and no wonder you don't understand the fulltime lifestyle. We've been fulltiming since 2006 and have enough left to see to keep us busy for many years to come. But then we don't try to see it all in under a year - we KNEW that was impossible. As to recuperating after surgery. Yes, those 3 steps will take a little doing, but once in the rig, everything will be easily accessible on the same level - - much easier than a lot of S&Bs. Some people don't like RVing - they feel the need to have a S&B, sit there staring at the same front or rear yard, year after year after year, worryign about crabgrass and gutters and neighbors that they wish would sell. Been there, done that, We enjoy this lifestyle and will continue as long as we can, then it will be into a Park Model/Condo where someone else does the maintenance or maybe assisted living by that time. RE: Questions for "half-timers"

You might want to ask this question in the Snowbird section, as essentially that is what a lot of them are - 'half-timers'. Barb

RE: Medicare Advantage for Full Timers?

Is there any program out there for those of us on Medicare to take advantage of the benefits of a Medicare Advantage program when travelling? I like the low Dr visit copays and routine care savings. And those benefits come from having you see the same physician/group in the same area all of the time. Costs vary widely across the country, that is why all of the Advantage program require you to use their local providers most of the time. BTW, some of the costs of the Advantage programs will be passed onto subscribers in the coming year or so as the subsidies that the companies were getting from Medicare are being phased out. Barb

RE: Extend-A-stay

The location of your propane tank would have been a no go for me when looking at it. Not venting to the outside is just asking for problems. I can't imagine that a manufacturer would do that on a coach. Barb

RE: Extend-A-stay

Your propane tank is WHERE? I thought they all had to be in compartments with open floor, easy access with no lock for shutoff, etc. Barb

RE: Portland to San Francisco on the 101

There is a fairground in Eureka that is a reasonably priced and great for seeing that area. Neat area in Arcata that treats waste water by using a series of lagoons to filter it before it enters the ocean. The area attracts all sorts of wildlife. Barb

RE: Portland to San Francisco on the 101

Where are you going to stay when you get to San Francisco? Golden Gate Bridge toll is only collected going south - free when going north. After going over GGB, you want to get on 19th Ave and go south to hook up with I-280 on the west side of the city. Don't stay on Highway 101. One of the best places to stay on Highway 101 on the Oregon Coast is in Reedsport - Winchester Bay. It is a county park and a really great place to spend some time. Barb

RE: Do I have enough saved to go full time ?

We went out at 62 and started to collect SS. I know of too many people who wanted to wait until the last minute as to collect as much as possible... and didn't live to do the things they had planned for their golden years. Heart attacks, strokes, cancer took them. Or they were too sick due to chronic illness (diabetes, arthritis, heart disease) by the time they retired to do more than sit and watch TV. The few thousand less we'll each draw by going out early is no concern to us. Our freedom during these golden years is worth it. :) As we sit someday in our rockers on the porch, we'll have wonderful memories of the years with the RVs. :) When you've looked over that precipice and come so close to not being here, it makes you realize that money can't buy everything and time is one of those things it can't buy. Never, ever will be sorry we retired early - so many great memories already and more to come. Plus our health is BETTER since we retired - less stress, more togetherness = longer life. Barb

RE: Xantrex inverter/charger issues

On our interface we can choose what the "Power Share" is given what we are plugged into. I always select one step lower, so if we have 50 amp power, I select the "Power Share" to 30 amps, on 30 amp shore power, select 20 amps. When on 15 amp power (driveway parking) it is selected at 5 amp because you never know what else is on that circuit from the house and I don't want it flipping the breaker off. Also when highway parking and on 15 amps, we turn the electric water heater off. Barb

RE: RV.org rating question-snowbirding vs. fulltiming

Go with the highest end used coach you can afford. Look at 8-10 year old coaches from Newell, Foretravel, etc. You might be surprised at what you can afford and how well built those coaches are and how their technology stacks up surprisingly well aside of entry level DPs today. Don't be take in by glitz. You want solid wood cabinets, etc. I'd be looking at a 6-10 year old Foretravel if we were buying right now. Barb

RE: Splendide washer legends

I do sheets all of the time. Can wash both at the same time, but always dry separately. Takes 70 minutes to dry - usually do these at night using the timer delay. So one sheet one night, the other the second night. Not a big deal, no longer than doing a couple of pairs of jeans and T-shirts. The key is to balance the load (2 pairs of jeans, 2 T-shirts; 2 large bath towels; etc.) and to do smaller loads. I also use the blue bibbed balls to help separate clothes as they dry. The pods have a 'dissolvable' plastic covering that might get caught in the filter and, as already mentioned, contain way to much detergent for the w/d combo. Barb Barb

RE: Diesel engines -- low miles?

Tires would be a concern. That low mileage would probably mean they sat a lot, which means UV degradation. So plan on replacing the tires. 10 years old, have the belts and hoses checked CAREFULLY. You would be doing that if getting a lot of travel time having normal service but there are a lot of people who go by mileage instead of time for servicing a DP and if only 3-4 K then might only be doing service every 2-3 years instead of every year. Has the refrigerator been checked to see if it was on the recall, etc.? Take your time and really look it over. But that is good advice for any rig. Barb

RE: RV.org rating question-snowbirding vs. fulltiming

The owners of RV Consumer group DO NOT RV. They don't own an RV and they don't spend a lot of time looking at RVs. Years ago they had friends that did give them a lot of feed back. Now, I think there are a few, but mainly they get brochures/web site info on the units and plug that into their "formulas" in some spreadsheet and come up with 'ratings'. Touring RV Manufacturers was probably confined to Oregon and Washington (meaning Country Coach, Monaco and Alpine) but neither state has manufacturers left - I'm not sure if Marathon 'builds' in Oregon or just services, since that is well beyond our price range. Personally, I wouldn't spend money on anything written by NON-RVers when it comes to buying an RV. The very best info about a particular brand is going to come from asking questions on an owner forum. But enough people do buy their stuff to keep them (meaning the husband and wife) going. Barb

RE: Do I have enough saved to go full time ?

Why don't travel only 6-8 month a year and keep the house. What other people think about that. That my plan when I turn 65 and retire.I don't want to wait till 66.As soon as the medicare start I retire. For some of us this is not an option because we never want to own another house. And really, if you are tied to a house then you will never know the true freedom that fulltiming can bring. You are instead, part-timing/snowbirding. That's an option, but it does have its limit. Barb
