RE: Stolen Camper

Sorry, I forgot about that login restriction on the other forum. Here is a direct link to the article I was referencing without the feedback from the other forum:
http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20130508/NEWS01/705089961
This is also an issue in all the southern border States since the SuperDuty seems to be the vehicle of choice for hauling cargo and people.

RE: Stolen Camper

This era of Ford trucks is easier to steal than most and I take additional precautions to safe keep mine. I posted recently about this on another forum.

RE: Truck camping on othe beach

Lifting the TC off the truck may have allowed him to self-extract. Once out of the hole he dug, he could have filled it and used boards, carpet or other traction material under the soft section before dropping the TC back down.
I found many people make it worse for themselves by spinning down to the frame or axle. Once you cannot get momentum, you need stop and air down or add traction material.

RE: Airbags

Unless you need the air bags to level your TV after setting up the WDH, I would suggest heavier rated shocks to dampen the oscillations you feel. If your truck carries varying amounts of weight, there are adjustable shocks (like Rancho) that you can dial in the dampening based on the load you are carrying.

RE: TV bracket blues

The plate that mounts to the back of the TV typically has four screws. You can bolt on a larger plate to the existing one and offset the holes to mount the TV higher.

RE: Snowriver 810

I have to agree that an older 3/4t will be overloaded hauling that Snow River and towing the boat at the same time. Mine is nine years newer and I had to put some money into modifications to tow safely and reliably behind my TC.

RE: Need help finding/repairing a water leak and soft spots.

Our 2006 FB2200 had a slightly different floor plan, but the same type of water damage. The front cap leaked along the top edge and allowed water to run down the walls and soak into the bath flooring. Check your front storage compartment for the same type of softness and look on your inside forward wall for any signs of water stains.

RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

Height and width restrictions vary by state. It looks like if you want to be compliant everywhere, you have to stay under 8' wide and 12.5' high. This does not mean you will fit down every road, but it does seem to be the restriction that will make you legal.

RE: Overall Rig Length

My Ford extended cab short bed is 19.5' and 22' with the Arctic Fox 811 on it. This is measuring from the front tow hooks to the truck rear bumper or camper generator exhaust which are the most extreme points on either end. Just for reference, the F250 cab sits at 6'9" unloaded and 1" lower with Camper at stock suspension height running 245/70R19.5 tires.

RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

vestigial = attribute that has lost its ancestral function
Now we can start muddying the options even more with SRW, 19.5 SRW, DRW and super singles. Will the DRW 6-tire guys ever get a break? Should they?
I will own a super single or DRW in the future (something with a 8' wide track), but it will have to be relegated to specialized use unless I move out of this densely packed area that is considering 7x16 parking spots the norm.

RE: What Would You Do?

I share many of the above comments about gasoline verses diesel engines. If I only had a TC, I would only need the gasoline engine. However once I add the 7000 lb trailer and mountain passes to my mix, I am happy to have the diesel.
The little trip we just made to the Pacific coast without a trailer could have easily been made with a gasoline engine powered truck, but it would have worn me out pulling my enclosed trailer last month to the Mohave Desert and back to the NorthWest without the diesel. We have two more long heavy mountain trips planned this year heading east plus one more heading south awaiting confirmation - All of those will welcome the capabilities of the diesel.

RE: DIY Spring Extender - Rev 1 - Half-a-Puck, PICS

There are two styles of StableLoads: Upper and Lower
If you do not have upper perches or need additional support, the lower is used.

RE: DIY Spring Extender - Rev 1 - Half-a-Puck, PICS

Countersink the nut in the puck and run the bolt from the bottom though the leaf spring. I played with wooden blocks and used a lag screw the same way.
BTW: Pressure treated lumber lasts about six months before the block compresses and deforms. This was 5000 miles of use with the TC.

RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

I brought up length and height because you cannot get a short wheelbase in a DRW and many 3/4t SRWs sit lower than 1t SRW or DRW trucks.

RE: Intro - Hawke

A horse blanket attached to the bumper, wrapped around the tailgate and tucked under the TC will save your tailgate. I would run without the tailgate unless your camper has floor issues that do no allow it to hang off the rear.

RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

I work and live in a congested area - Even my short SRW has trouble fitting in some of the spots that were designed for the Prius crowd. To discount the additional width and length as nothing only means you drive outside of a major city. Even height in parking garages can be a problem - I squeak by just under 7' and have to remove my radio antenna to keep it from catching everything hanging off the ceiling. I have also had to back out of a tight garage because speed bumps were added later and my cab would have contacted the ceiling when going over them.
Fortunately, I rarely have to take the truck into town, but even the local store parking lots are down sized to meet parking requirements in less than adequate space. Many times there is no "back 40" parking and you have to circle the lot until a space frees up.

A flush mount plug for the engine block heater. I have an on board maintenance charger on my off road vehicle with the same setup.

RE: Truck camping on othe beach

In sand you want a very large footprint with very mild tread. A wide street slick will do better than tall tractor tire in sand.
I was pleased my 19.5's did as well as they had this past weekend. I needed the capacity since I normally haul a TC plus tow a heavy tongue weight. Nitto makes 285 width tires in higher weight ranges but not enough for my load.

RE: Truck camping on othe beach

We just returned from the Pacific coast with 19.5's. Although I did not venture in to really loose stuff, I did fine with 11.5K lbs riding on 245/70R19.5 tires inflated at 100 PSI. I was expecting that I would need to air down at least little but did not sink as bad as many others warn and did not touch pressures. Bellow are some pictures so you can see how far we "camped" from the surf.

We cannot go without our heater. What are doing with yours? Will you rely on electric, catalytic or a relocated LPG forced air?
