RE: PC in your TC?

BiGG, Thanks for the input. Greatly appreciated.
LabMan1945, Check around when ordering, I see them on sale here and there. I like using sites like NexTag for price comparison and see TechForLess has the wired version I have on sale for $150 including shipping! I’m gonna order another one for just in case something happens to this one for that price.

RE: 2001 Lance 1161 NIGHTMARE!!!

In response to posting a picture of Mooney’s license plate …
11/06/09 05:42am Maybe it’s not a concern for some here but I would never post a picture of my license plate when it only takes a few minutes to look up that person’s real name and address having that information.
Too many nutjobs and criminals out there lurking around just waiting for an opportunity!
11/06/09 07:16am I post my name.. many know my address... and phone numbers
what if, what if, OH! my... what if
I'm not a scaredy-cat
afraid of everything in the world
I even boondock with impunity.
Get a life
11/06/09 08:13am No need to be an idiot about this, I was just being nice offering a suggestion, maybe you could be nice in return when responding! :R
I posted it because criminals may wanna visit Mooney's home next time he mentions hes away camping.
11/06/09 09:12am I'm away from home for 5 to 6 months a year... my debit cards and credit cards are used the whole time. My out of state lic plate shows up in several hundred locations every year. Everyone knows that we are not at home.... what they don't know is who is at home!
I refuse to be paranoid. I refuse to be scared.
I refuse to obsess over every little thing in life
I refuse to try to scare others.
12/23/07 08:36am My view seems to be different that some.
I don't want an uninvited visitor to just show up.
I don't want to be on a list of any sort that gives personal information….
….. I don't blindly trust my fellow man.
Apparently you’ve changed you mind since the post in 2007 or its ok to post others personal information but not your own? :h

RE: PC in your TC?

Along the lines of this thread I probably have a stupid question but here goes. I have been looking at the Wilson amplifiers but get rather confused with the different models. I am looking for an amplifier for the truck when traveling and if possible use the same amplifier in the house as my reception sometimes leaves something to be desired. Can the same amp be used in the house with the antenna located near a window? Also what is the real practical difference between the 12.5" and 4.8" magnetic antennas? Does the larger antenna pull the signal in better than the shorter one?
Yes you can use the same one and with mine I usually can just set the antenna anywhere in the room for good reception, you may not need too worry about placing it near a window. If you are getting a weak signal now you are gonna love the amp! For the antenna, I bought several but have only used the small one with great results so I never hooked any of the others up.

RE: Many New Lance TC for 2010

Interesting how after all those years of nearly everybody else going to aluminum while Lance was still telling us how their wood framing was allegedly superior they are getting with the times and admitting they were wrong. That aside, its nice seeing some new blood in the mix.
Gosh in hard side campers I can only think of Arctic Fox going to ALL Aluminum frames in all models before Lance. Of course I’m only thinking of companies still in business.
There’s Host and Eagle Cap off the top of my head but that’s not the point … when others started building with aluminum Lance continued touting the alleged superiority of there wood framed units for several years until they changed their minds in recent history and started building their larger units with aluminum. Now all their units will be aluminum so did wood change recently or what lol!

RE: PC in your TC?

I'm not surprised, really, by the usage. Lightweight notebooks really do fit the bill for the TC. The comment regarding reading the "news" with a cup of coffee really hit home. While I have the PC, I don't have a paid wireless account. I was a bit surprised by the number of folks who posted that do.
I avoid monthly fee's like the plague but of late have been considering dumping the home hard-line phone/DSL (~$60)and going with a wireless cell/data combo (~$90). Have others dropped their home data tethers in favor of the mobile solution or are you carrying both? 5G of date enough or do you come up short?
I’m mobile and online more than most so I have two aircards as 5G would never work here but even for normal use with 5G you will need to pay attention to the amount of pictures/videos monthly as 5G can get chewed up in no time. If you spend a few hours online everyday it should be no problem and they do have a handy button you can click to see your usage-to-date.
As far as landlines, haven’t had those for years now and would never even consider one.
P.S. I mentioned it before but can never stress it enough, look into an amplifier as there are too many places around the US that have shoddy service you will not be happy with where they speed things up or no service unless you have one. They work as advertised!

RE: Lance generator compartment mod - Yamaha EF2000is generator.

This is also a lance designed generator compartment, not just a storage spot, with a metal interior and factory venting built into the door.
Yeh, my Lance has the same thing. Make sure your life insurance is paid up.
Brad
Ever heard of anybody having a problem using a gasoline powered generator in an RV? With the odds of you being injured/maimed/killed being in the stratosphere doing just about anything else on the planet compared with this, I don’t see the big deal. Like for instance, there are over 70,000 pedestrian injuries and 5000 deaths annually in the US and not one from a gasoline powered generator used in an RV that I have ever heard of. Should we all stop walking now as well? :h

RE: Lance generator compartment mod - Yamaha EF2000is generator.

Gasoline powered generators have been used in RV’s since the beginning of time and I wouldn’t think twice about using one pending it had a proper intake air/exhaust setup. Motorhomes and toy haulers come standard with gasoline powered units, a TC is no more vulnerable than any other RV in this regard.

RE: PC in your TC?

What are y'all using for connectivity? .....
Verizon (the only choice with 5 times the 3G service AT&T has) aircard and you will be happy you shelled out a few extra bucks for an amplifier which will also work for your phone when needed. The amp will provide service in many places where you can't get service and speed up your connection where you can.

RE: 340 cummings DP

Unlike gas, diesels do not need stabilizes. However, in a warm humid climate, an anti fungus additive would be wise depending upon how long it is stored. Anything less than six months would not require this however.
What source do you have that refutes this information?

RE: Endeavor Launch - STS-130

kohldad,
I have a home in Orlando and have been to many launches. If you have never seen one make sure you do before they end (or all five remaining as you will never get tired of seeing, hearing and feeling a launch)! I suggest getting a ticket to get out on the causeway if you can (you need a vehicle placard), otherwise Titusville is great also and there you can park the night before.
If you can, get tickets (and pay attention on the information on the link below where it says they sell out fast because they do), park in Titusville the night before and drive onto the cape when they open the gates in the morning. Titusville has several places to park and many homeowners allow cheap parking on their property but get there early for the best spots. I’ll still be here in Feb and plan on attending.
Read about on and off the cape parking/ticket info here

RE: A few questions on Dualies

The moral of the story ... is dually’s and or diesels are a want, not a need for the most part and for those "need" types hey cool, have fun out there but don't pretend there's only one option since there's decades of us in another camp who don't like dually's and diesels and we all get along just fine! :C
BiGG can you help me on this one . . . who exactly NEEDS a DRW?
I may be reading this wrong, however if I am understanding correctly it sounds like "if we've done it wrong for decades its fine to continue."
I'm one of those kids who survived the 60/70's riding in the camper staring out the cabover window. Does that mean I should throw out everything learned about safety in four decades and leave well enough alone?
This is starting to sound like someone trying to explain why the seatbelt is a "want" not a "need."
While I understand there are plenty of campers made for SRW trucks, there are also many that are not. If you make the choice to exceed the GVWR of your truck I simply ask you don't try to justify it to others. If you make a conscious decision based on your belief of what's safe for you and your family . . . so be it. Just don't thump your chest at people who don't agree to take the same route.
I don't tell others to go buy an F-550, its what I wanted/needed to feel secure with the load I carry. Please don't try and convince me that overloading ANY truck is cool because everyone's been doing it for decades.
Yes, you were reading that wrong. I’m not thumping my chest at anybody so maybe you will see things differently reading sans that idea. My point is there are some here that insist anybody with more than a paperweight in the bed needs a dually. I don’t agree with them. You quoted me saying "not a need for the most part" … meaning a dually could be warranted for some situations but the OP was asking about a dry bath 3-4000# slide-in which is well within the SRW realm.
Early on in the thread I mentioned a Host Chinook for a possible choice coming in at 2970#’s with a slide. A dually is only a “need” in the minds of those with a need for that or a like slide-in imo and Host seems to agree as they picture one sitting on a SRW Ford is all I'm saying.

RE: A few questions on Dualies

Those campers were monsters and very heavy, especially when fully loaded with four of us kids riding in the back.
Just how heavy? I'm not being argumentative, but curious.
Many of those campers were easily in the 4000+ pound league. Below is a linked article showing one manufacturer building 2500-3000 lb dry weights and remember for several decades besides everything else making up wet weights there were several people riding back there like my family had.
Were early slide-ins light?
http://www.truckcampermagazine.com/images/stories/march_2008/kingkampers3.jpg
Some of my parents slide-ins included a 11.6’ side door Coachman, 11.6’ Corsair, an 11.8’ Hornet, a 12’ Camp-A-While along with several others that all were all loaded with every amity offered, everything my mother could pack in every nook & cranny (an she didn’t travel light) along with four of us kids. Others in our club had big campers and big families as well and I highly doubt any of them were under 4000 lbs loaded. Most were more I’m sure and we all towed toy and/or boat trailers adding even more tongue weight to the mix.
On another note, some have mentioned how trucks from previous decades had much larger payloads but that’s not true A 2010 GMC ¾ has a payload of up to 3924. A ’77 C20 (a 2wd ¾ for those who don’t know what a C20 was in that day) had a payload of between 2075 and 3930, a K20 (4x4 ¾ ton) was between 2120 and 4250.
The moral of the story (not directed at you btw) is dually’s and or diesels are a want, not a need for the most part and for those "need" types hey cool, have fun out there but don't pretend there's only one option since there's decades of us in another camp who don't like dually's and diesels and we all get along just fine! :C

RE: A few questions on Dualies

OK, I wasn’t gonna but ….
A short story about the luckiest kid in the world and his mom
I was a little boy in the sixties and seventies and my parents had many slide-ins and only the biggest and best. A new big block ¾ ton 4x4 gasser every year, a new slide-in at least every two years and never less than an 11 footer and one was a 12. We towed other toys with the standard of the day being a pull out step bumper.
Those campers were monsters and very heavy, especially when fully loaded with four of us kids riding in the back. The trucks simply went to the spring shop and had leafs added until it sat level when loaded. Sway bars were added or upgraded and that was it. We and many others traveled hundreds of millions if not billions of miles all those years with never a problem.
We also had cars as well but those were dads to get back and forth to work. The trucks and campers were moms. She loved them and drove her rigs everywhere. Now if my mother could easily handle those crude by today’s standard rigs I’m pretty sure a dually is not the must that some think it is ….. just ask my mom! :W
