RE: Hwy 209 from Port Jervis to Kingston, NY

We were Rondout members and broke the contract because of them taking off the road reservations when we were made to use a first come policy.
I called them about reservations and they said yes to a reservation but no guarantee as to which spot would be available. Still undecided about staying there. Jelleystone at Platz has large pull thru's so I may go there.

RE: Hwy 209 from Port Jervis to Kingston, NY

Thanks for the replies. I have used 209 between Stroudsburg, Pa and Port Jervis many times, but never tried the northern section between Port Jervis and Kingston. Don't mind going slower during part of trip as long as the road is decent to drive.

RE: cash grab by Crown Villa Resort

Dogs and kids should be locked up in a comfortable prison like enclosure whenever their parents and owners are away. Just joking, of course. Truth is a responsible pet owner would never leave a dog tied up like that. Its called respecting property owned by someone else. Many public (state, federal, local) camp grounds have specific rules against that type of situation.

RE: Big rig parks between Jacksonville and Richmond

I use the Big Rig Best Bets books, either print or digital. I have the 2012 print edition and the 2013 digital edition. These books have RV Resort listings, restaurant listings, and fuel stop listings.
It does not show all parks, just those already visited by the authors, but the digital edition is constantly being updated as new parks are added. It is a great resource for us.
I have absolutely nothing to do with these books except as a satisfied customer.
Medico, have you driven hwy 209 from Port Jervis to Kingston? Is it a good route and how about Roundout Valley RV in Accord? I was thinking of trying this route in June.

RE: Rest Areas Safe?

Well I've been all over the country. Some states have beautiful rest stops with 24hr security and free coffee. Some have 55 gal barrels for trash and nothing else. I never overnight, but I frequently take a short nap during a long day. mostly in the day. At night I prefer a nice campground with clean bath rooms and showers. Once I was parked at a rest stop on 495 outside the Boston area. In the middle of the day a pimp pulled up and 4 "working" girls got out and started going from truck to truck selling Girl Scout cookies maybe? Broad daylight! Now way out in the middle of the dead flat great plains, I've stopped at rest areas and hardly seen another soul for hours. I just assume 99% of folks are allright, but that 1% can show up anywhere.

RE: Navistar RV is gone.......Hello new owners

As I recall, Navistar got into big problems with the latest polution control rquirements. They tried to design an alternative approach to the urea system and failed to meet standards. That coming after the Ford diesel problems put Navistar on the brink. Don't know where they stand now. The old International diesel they built for Ford was a great engine that would run forever. But it was old technology that would not meet new emissions requirements. I had one in my 2002 F350 and wish I had kept it. Navistar has been struggling ever since.

RE: Few Repair/Maintance questions for new RV owner

Someone may have over-filled your AC with Freon. It happened to me and I ended up burning out the compressor clutch. You might want to take some gauges and check AC pressures.
Steve
I would also add a small can of compressor oil. You can get it at an auto parts store. It might free it up. The squeeling may also be the pully shaft bearing. Squirt oil there too. It won't fix a worn bearing but if it gets quiet momentarily thats a clue.

RE: Cold weather condensation solution?

The simplest and least expensive solution is a small dehumidifier. I own three. One for my house, one for my RV and one for my boat. They cost from about $100 and up depending on size and features and they work like a gem. Showers, cooking and even your breath can raise humidity quite high in a closed confined area. Without running the AC or furnance a small dehumidifier will dry things out nicely. Put it in the bathroom after a shower and close the door and the room will be bone dry in a couple hours max. They are no louder than a fan, and use very little electricity. Such a deal! With the very high summer humidity in Florida, I run one for a few hours several times a week and my coach never gets damp and musty while stored.

RE: Newbie - 1st time towing Car on Tow Dolly - Tips?

I do a quick walk around inspection at each stop for food, fuel, rest, etc. Towing is quite easy but allow extra stopping distance. The hardest part is getting used to the straps. Wear gloves, its much easier on your hands. Depending on how high your MH hitch is you may want a hitch ball that is mounted lower than the standard tow bar. I use the lowest drop that Camper World sells. And add a tilt wheel to the trailer tongue (same as a boat trailer, approx $30. That makes it so much easier to raise and lower the tongue or to move the dolly around when it is empty.

RE: Few Repair/Maintance questions for new RV owner

Ok, i will try the tire thing and see if out of round.
What kind of insulation did you use in the dog house to quiet it down.
If i replace the headers do i have to replace the whole exhaust system or are they bolt on? The exhaust is in good shape all the way back so hate to replace it all.
Can i just replace the AC compressor my self and add freon from parts store, or do i need to replace compressor and take it somewhere for them to fill it?
If the Y pipe and the rest of the exhaust are in good shape they can be reused. The scary part is the bolts for the headers. They often break and have to be drilled out. Labor $. And the longer the leak goes on the greater the chance for damage to the head or block surfaces. As for the ac, I have changed them myself, but you need to know what you are doing. If the compressor blew up there may be trash thru the whole system especially the expansion valve. If that isn't a problem, then you need to replace both the receiver/dryer and the compressor. While refilling the system, bleed the lines at first to remove any trsh or water. Also add some compressor oil. Beware of the high pressure side. In a shop they use a vacuum device to empty the system before refilling and by law they are required to capture the refrigerant and not release it into the air. But we shade tree mechanics do lots of bad stuff (like millions of gallons of old oil) so buy a Chilton's or some such for that engine and have at it if you are fearless and handy. :)

Sounds like Green Actes is the place to be. Fun living..... aww you know the rest of that song. Sounds like my first stop for sure. How about 288 vs 15 around Richmond. Its been so many years since I've gone that way.

RE: Trouble Free Motorhome Owner?

Have owned two new Class A gassers, both Georgetown. First one had zero issues and no warranty work. Traded it in on a bigger model and had noisy gears in the differential and the air compressor failed, both completely covered by Ford at no cost to me.

RE: Denver to Telluride + Ouray - Best Route & RV Parks

You don't say what kind of RV? I like the drive to Leadville, then Independence Pass to Aspen (great stop if only for a day). The RV camping at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a fantastic location. 550 is one of my favorites and once you are at Telluride, Durango and Mesa Verde are an easy visit. Aspen and Telluride are both very high end, but very lovely places. In the mud and gray off seasons the restaurants offer much less expensive special pricing on meals and rooms. But in the summer or winter seasons expect full (high) prices. My kids are grown so we take advantage of off season pricing. And because we like the back roads I don't take my MH but use my camper van instead. It has high enough clearance (I removed running boards, etc) to travel on "improved" gravel roads but not jeep only places. Hwy 133 from Carbondale down to 50 is a very scenic route that rivals 550 but is easier to drive. There is a great BBQ joint in the little village of Marble. The quarry there provided much of the pure white marble used for monuments in DC. The Montrose area has lots of RV parks and is central for day trips to a wide area of interesting locations including Telluride. The SW area of Colorado is my favorite area and then NM as the weather gets colder in the fall. Get off of I70 or I25. The drive is slower and less tense and all the routes offer great scenery.

Big rig parks between Jacksonville and Richmond

I will be heading north in June and usually go thru Columbia, then I77 to I81. This trip will likely be I95 to to 64 to 81. We won't be doing side trips along the way and I would like to hear some nice RV parks that offer easy in and out pull thrus for a MH and tow. Also is the 288 beltway around the west side of Richmond a bad route. I know many in here prefer cutting over to Hwy 15 to 64. 350 to 400 miles per day is my max drive time. Those 500 mile days when I was much younger are over! Thanks.

RE: Few Repair/Maintance questions for new RV owner

I have a 1996 M/H on a P-30 chassis and had the similar problems. For the vibration in the seats I would also look at the roundness of the tires. Out of round tires will cause that kind of vibration and wheel balancing won't help. You can check by jacking the MH up with the wheels off the ground and put a block of wood under the tire and spin the tire and see what the gap is from the tire to the block of wood. Mine were 1/8 out of round and new tires fixed that problem. A double layer of insulation fixed the engine noise from the dog house. Headers greatly reduced the engine heat issues. I found that advancing the timing from 4 degrees BTC to 9 degrees also helped and added to the performance as well.
Good idea. It is possible the previous owner had to brake extremely hard in an emergency type situation and you have "flat spots" on your front tires. Once there they never go away. Some tires come slightly out of round from the factory and get worse with time and abnormal wear.

RE: NEED MY A/C

Not a practical solution for you. A 30 amp draw would require at least a 3000 watt inverter. And it would take a very big battery bank to sustain it for more than a very short time. It takes a lot of 12v amps to convert to 110v amps. A much better solution for you would be the Honda generator. But I also question the 30 amp draw. A 30 amp load is typical for an entire RV with a single roof air. The roof air should only be about a 20amp draw by itself. The other 10amps are for lighting, Micro, etc. I'm guessing a Honda 2000 or 3000 would do it for you.

RE: Knoxville Tenn to Charlotte N C

The only really hard part is not being distracted by the beautiful scenery. The lovely but tortured, twisted and folded remnants of ancient mountains that were higher than the rockies. Makes me want to pull over and take samples from some of those grand rock walls. Like folks already said, drive conservatively on the down hill and save on the brakes. The driver has to focus, everybody else gets to ooh and ahh.
