RE: Illegal Towing.... Triple Towing

I have a Class A with doubles, triples, tanker, passengers and school bus complete with medical card and 40 years experience. Do not tell me I am unsafe.
In fact, when you can back up a set of doubles like this then you come talk to me.

That's impressive there. I've only tried to back up a couple times pulling tandem. Certainly something I could use more practice at.

RE: Illegal Towing.... Triple Towing

Always amazed at the passion and ignorance this subject brings up on this forum. Seems there is always as much false info as there is true.

RE: Towing Behind My 5th Wheel...

Dbl check with your insurance company to see if they will cover a dbl tow...then that second trailer needs it's own braking system not just surge brakes
It would have to be a stated exclusion in an insurance policy for them to not cover.
Brake requirements are state specific. Surge brakes are allowed, at least in Colorado.

RE: Towing Behind My 5th Wheel...

Whatever you do will have to be custom fabed for your 5er. Make sure you build heavier than you think you need. I had a welder do mine and told him to add additional support wherever he thought was needed.

Here is a similar thread that I started. Mine looks just like yours, and tows fine.

Thanks Bionic Man, I don't know how I missed your thread. I thought I searched before I posted mine. Thanks again, a lot of good info.
I didn't mean to come across as one of those guys that berate you for not using the search function. I just wanted to show you the thread as there is some good insight there. Starting a new thread gets some new blood involved, which can be a good thing.
As to my kingpin, I am still adjusting the air pressure. I think it becomes a little trial and error when you are first using it.

RE: Your tow rig

IMO, the tire and axle ratings are more important than what Dodge rate the truck for. I would be very comfortable towing what you are considering with your truck.

RE: 2004 Dodge Ram high mileage 24V vs 1998 12V

Both would be good engines. 48RE is a much better transmission if you are looking at autos. The NV5600 in the 04 would be better than the 1998 which I think was the old 5 speed. Bigger cab in the 04 as well. I think you can see where I am leaning.
Yes! I may make an offer on the 04. I have found several articles that indicate it is more reliable. The first thing I should do is to replace the injectors on that year. I have to go back and ready, I think there was a mention of a pump that would fail? but I think that was a few years between the 98 and 04, that I definitely do not want.
And I just realized the 04 is indeed a 4WD. I thought they meant 4 wheels in the rear, but I can clearly see the 4WD shifter in the floorboard in the pictures.
03 and 04 had the fuel pump under the hood and was prone to failure (mine lasted 90,000 plus miles, so if you are looking at 200k miles, it may already be changed). 04.5 moved it into the tank. 04.5 also had a slightly higher output.

I'm not a fan of the look, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I will say that it looks much taller than the current version.

No issues in Colorado. I thought diesel did not require the transfer pump.

RE: Gas engine and Diesel of same specs.Pull the same.

Would be interesting, but the CTD you are thinking of comparing is at about a 100 HP deficit if your 8.1 is pushing 340. The turbo will make up for some of that, especially at elevation.

RE: Overnight near I70 - Eagle - Grand Junction

Thanks for the replies. We ended up at the WalMart in Rifle. If I just had the fifth wheel, the rest areas in Rifle or Fruita would have been better options, but with vulnerable cargo on my ATV trailer, I thought it would be better to stay somewhere with more light and some sercurity.

RE: Is there a good way to transport a golf cart with a 5er?

I've towed tandem for over 10 years now. If your state allows it, it is a good way to go. With a little utility trailer and a golf cart you would be unlikey to know that it is even back there. The main challenge is finding a place to fuel up, but if you are on the interstates you can find a truck stop with RV pumps (or use the big rig area if you are a diesel). I have a 60 gallon aux tank, so I never ahve to worry about filling when I am towing.

RE: Why don't 5th wheel mfgrs place more heavy items in rear?

More pin weight = better handling.
Less pin weight = increased likelihood of the trailer fishtailing, especially with cross winds.

RE: Bought new tires today, gone are the Michelins!

And as far as the transmission goes, I felt the same way when I got my truck. I wonder if it is some sort of break in period because now at 20000 miles I'm very happy with the 68RFE.

RE: Bought new tires today, gone are the Michelins!

I'm interested to hear a towing report comparing the old Ford vs. the new RAM.
Okay, not a lot of towing with the new ram....but here goes. The mileage towing with the Ford (exact same load as we traded during our trip).... ford got 1 MPG better towing and the Ford mileage was through the Rockies and the Ram towed on fairly flat land....so the Ford mileage may be even better, but it was broken in also. The Ford pulls harder.....maybe not from a dead stop, but once things are rolling there is no comparison....the Ford has way more pull and that's even with the Ford having 3.55 gears. Unloaded ride, Ram wins....loaded, the Ford rides better but I have not adjusted my setup on my TT hitch and it rides nose high right now. Seating comfort is a toss up....very similar to me. Ammenities.....ford wins. Power extending and power folding and plain better mirrors on the Ford as well.
To be totally truthful....and I am a diehard Ram/Dodge/Mopar guy......I feel like I downgraded in trucks in performance other than exhaust brake. I forgot to mention the Ram exhaust brake is much better! The Ford transmission seems better which is funny, because when I traded my 2010 Ram for the Ford I liked the Ram trans better.....perhaps the Ram trans still has some learning to do.
Looks wise, the Ram wins. To me it is hands down the best looking truck on the market. The Alcoas, the dually fenders, the nose....all beautiful. Perhaps some bias there, but I honestly tried to give them all a fair shake.
In all, I consider it a lateral move. I gained payload but lost some seat of the pants performance. Gained in the looks department, but most importantly I feel like I am reacquainted with an old friend. No more sitting at the campfire listening to people pull in and telling my wife, "Hey, that sounds like Cummins!" and having that empty feeling in my gut not owning one myself. Call it trivial, crazy, whatever....but I am all smiles looking over the hood of a Ram driving down the road again. The sound of the Cummins just makes me grin.
Good honest feed back. I love my RAM, don't think I would consider another brand. Dodge has just been too good to me.

RE: JT's Elephant Foot Jack Pads

Thanks for the input but I'm unsure how using boards will help me when I need to replace my landing gear pads as they are pretty badly bent.
