RE: gauges

I doubt if you have anything to worry about. Mine wouldn't go much over 1100 when it was all stock. Now I stay under 1300 sustained but I can only hit that with the 200hp tune, which I seldom use. I've heard stories about the 03s dropping valve seats but I think that's the racers and guys who go nuts with the mods and way high egt. Craig

RE: Would you trade? 2010 Dodge 3500

I wouldn't get rid of a great truck that was doing a good job besides the new ones are a big turn-off for me with all the emmissions garbage. All those new bells and whistles are just more stuff to break and my 03 has plenty of nice stuff I never had before anyway. Craig

RE: Air Bags or Timbren?

Do you plan to use bags or timbrens on something? I like airbags so I can keep the back end up to the empty heigth - it's great for the handling and headlights. Had them on my 97 for 9 yrs - never a problem. No problems with them on my 03. They work great with the Rancho 9000s w/incab air. Craig

RE: Changing your own oil

I've known responsible cat owners who didn't let them roam but I used to have a neighbor who bred boxers and also had several cats and he had no consideration for anyone else - dogs barking nonstop and cats all over the neighborhood. One day I was in the front trimming some of my hedges and one of the neighbors cats was sitting on the edge of his driveway watching me very closely. I had my back to the cat for awhile and that rascal came over into my yard, took a dump right behind me and went back to their driveway and watched me again. Well, one day that same cat made the unfortunate mistake of jumping into my basement through an open window and couldn't figure out how to get back out and that cat was never seen again! I know someone else who used to let their cat roam til it came home one day with a loose wire tie around it's neck and a note that said the next time it wouldn't be loose. Craig

RE: Benefits of airbags?

This is my 2nd truck with airbags and I won't have a truck without them. I like to keep the loaded heigth the same as empty for the headlights and steering and take the mushiness out of the ride. You might want to try towing without them for awhile and see if you're comfortable with it as is. Craig

RE: How low a temp will heat pump function?

An rv ac is the same as a window shaker but with bottom ducting and I've worked on no less than 1000 window shakers. Actually, the window shakers are a step or two better designed than rv ACs. Craig

RE: How low a temp will heat pump function?

.8" is the max TOTAL s.p. the unit can handle without overloading the ecm. Your installer must have set dipswitches 5&6 to enhanced if you hear the speed changes. IIRC, the unit uses 3 speeds 50,80 & 100% and the %s depend on the unit tonnage and the hi spd cfm chosen with the dipswitches. The "service facts" insert that comes with the unit shows all the settints. Craig

RE: How low a temp will heat pump function?

Not all ACs have the ecm motors and close tolerances on the airflow throughout the range. I'm just saying a dirty filter really raises head pressure in the HP mode and drives the compression ratio/compressor heat up on the conventional units. 34 years for me, mostly commercial but I've done a LOT of residential. I worked for a residential/Trane contractor a few yrs ago and got trained on the ecm motors and 19i dual compressors and 16i. Unless they changed, the ecms are sortof variable speed. The motor is capable of it but the module/dip switches only use the speeds required for the unit size. They get set for 350,400 or 450 cfm/ton. Mode of fan operation is also field selectable - enhanced mode makes the most of the ecm and low spd is 50% of the selected hi spd cfm. Trane recommended not exceeding .8" w.c. tsp or ecm failures are likely. My install never go over .45". Craig

RE: Need Help Choosing Tow Vehicle and Every Day Driver

I'd forget the 1/2T and get at least 3/4T or 1T srw. Diesel if you will tow a lot otherwise gas is fine. 3.73 ratio in a diesel would be good for that weight and get good mpg. I'd guess 3.73 also in a gasser with a big engine and maybe lower for a smaller engine. It all depends on the power range of the engine, and what gears are OK for towing. I like to find out which gear is ok for hiway towing and use a gear calculator to pick the best overall ratio for mixed use. Craig

RE: How low a temp will heat pump function?

Outside humidity is also a huge factor. My Az house has HPs and no elec backup. It's been 13 degrees and dry and it worked fine and it's been 25 degrees and really high humidity and worked terrible cuz it frosted up quickly and defrosted and back and forth and back and forth. The compressor works harder and hotter in the HP mode than in AC. Internal heat goes up with the compression ratio. Compression ratio is discharge psia/suction psia. Keep the return filter clean! The compression ratio in the HP mode, on a cold night and with a dirty filter, can be double that of the normal AC mode in the summer. I've seen the worst compressor burnouts in HPs than in any residential straight cooling ACs. Craig

RE: gas grill recomendations

My Olympian rv grill works great - it's the best door prize I ever won! The heat is as even and controllable as any high end home grill I've owned - Weber, Falcon, Jennair. I run it off the rv tanks with a 25' hose. I can either use the folding stand that came with it or set it on a CG picnic table or the bed of my truck. I came from Co. and it worked fine in the mtns. RE: Whats not to like?

Our first 5er was a Shadow Cruiser. 7' wide, 25' long, 5k fully loaded and it pulled like a dream with the pointed front end. Small 5ers don't have much storage space on the outside but the inside storage was plenty adequate for us. I've seen a 17' Nash 5er pulled by an old Ranger p/u.

RE: Greenball Towmaster tires

I never had st tire problems til I moved to Az. and I had a 4yr old (but low milage) towmaster lose a tread. The tire shop swears they are as good as any other tire so I put them on again and I've been storing the 5er blocked up. Tire shop says 4 yrs is max for any tire in Az. but I'm convinced that the st's are much worse than other types. Next time I will get 16" wheels and LTs. Craig

RE: 50amp to 20amp (Is This a No-No?)

I can't tell from your post if you have a 20a breaker protecting the 12 ga cord. That load shouldn't be a problem unless something shorts out. Then you better have no bigger than a 20a breaker in the 12ga cord circuit somewhere. I'm not as trusting as I used to be. I make sure breakers or fuses are sized for the smallest wire in a circuit. RE: My SunnyBrook Brookside

Lower the hitch (if it's adjustable) if you have excessive clearance to the bed sides but that is rare. Maybe lower the back of the truck a little. The 4x4s have really tall spacers. Craig

RE: Timbren vs Airbag - revisited

My worst rebound was coming from the bottom OLs but they aren't necessary with airbags anyway so I cut them off. I also have rancho 9000s and the bags on incab air. I use enough air in the bags to keep the back end up where it was unloaded and fine tune the ride with the shocks. The combo is terrific! I recently added a tank to the bags and that was the icing on the cake. I put my bags on one line - no problem. My loads are always centered. I had them seperated on another truck and ended up piping them together. Craig

RE: Feeling discouraged in used fiver search

I know they are out there. 4 yrs ago I sold an immaculate SB 2000 25' 5er for 11k and bought this one for 10k. We loved the 25'er but we had to go bigger to get recliners and free standing dinette - better for relaxing in the evenings.. There's a lot of people thinking about trading but haven't advertised yet. That's how we found our SB30 - a friend of a friend kind of deal. Most brands have their own local clubs. The members of the SB club we used to belong to were constantly selling to each other as they moved up. I'd check out the local clubs and also look up the local good sam clubs and check with the members. Craig

RE: ok, so my truck's not the hoss i thought it was...

4x4 means you have to change 2 sets of gears. You could probably give it more fuel if it had an intercooler. Those mods are probably more than the whole truck is worth but it would make a big difference. Craig
