RE: Full Synthetic or Synthetic Blend

I didn't think full syn was necessary after seeing that semi syn schaffers has done as well or better on the UOAs. Craig

RE: Long Box vs Short Box

My first P/U was a SB and I'll never do that again. Regardless of hitch issues, the better ride and more storage makes having to back (IMO, is easier anyway) into parking spots well worth it. Also, my SB had a small gas tank and that was the worst part. Craig

RE: air bags strictly for comfort

I've had double bellows bags, FS and Airlift on 2 trucks and love them. I like to keep the truck the same height as empty so the steering and lights are exactly the same. I also have rancho 9000 air adjustable shocks. The shocks help just as much as the bags but too much psi in either one gets counter productive. The rougher the road, the more good they will do. I adjust the bags to get the oscillation right and then the shocks for how fast I want it to settle down and it's really easy with the in-cab controls. I think they are more for comfort than necessity. Funny thing... 20psi really helped the empty ride on my 3/4T but they do nothing for my 1T empty ride. Other factors will either make or break the outcome. Craig

RE: Any 5th wheel hitch operate exactly like a semi 5th wheel?

My old Drawtite rocker evolved into the reese 16k - same as the picture above. I always leave the jaws closed to hookup but leave the safety latch up. I can see the handle move out and then snap in when the pin is home and I also hear the big clack. Craig

RE: Any 13' Ram DEF MPG yet?

Wow, that's great! I thought they had to have some indication to show when they regenerate so you don't shut them off in the middle of it. My FIL said his 07.5 has a light or something. That's the extent of what I know about 6.7s! Craig

RE: Water heater switch MOD to prevent accidental turn on

I drilled the plate and put in a red pilot light. It's hard miss when it's on. Craig

RE: New Orleans

We went there about about 12 yrs ago and I looked up a guy who grew up there and I worked with him in Denver, for awhile. That helped immensely, having a native take us around. The streets follow the river and he knew every shortcut and alley. The best cajon food was at the little, out-of-the-way places. One restaurant was a converted, very old house and it was the best food in town. There were pictures of presidents and vice presidents and several more high-up types. The French Quarter was a blast... be ready for anything! After we were back home, I called and asked my friend, what is Marde Gras like? He said, "the Friday night we were at the French Quarter was kinder garten". "Come back for Marde Gras and I'll take you to graduate school"! Make sure you go to a Daiquiri's store. You may need a designated driver cuz they really know how to make a good drink! Take a tour of the Super Dome stadium and some of the plantation mansion. I'd go back just for the popcorn shrimp and bread pudding! Craig

RE: Scottsdale, AZ

Next time... there a good Mexican restaurant at Cave Creek! It's right on the main road. Craig

RE: Merging onto an Interstate

I worked at Casper Wy. for nearly a year building the Star Tribune building. They have the shortest ramps I ever saw. I got a surprise the first time I got on the hiway with a service van with a 300 6! Better plan ahead AND go like h_ll. Craig

RE: 2000 Dodge 5.9 Cummins programmer

Several friends have 99-02 CTDs, turned up different ways. The edge comp box works very good. Another friend added a Quab box and a ATS trans and then RV 275 injectors. That was excessive - it smoked like a coal train if he wasn't careful. He was afraid of his 53 block so he then traded it in. After seeing how it went with those trucks, I would start with RV 275s and see if you want any more. Craig

RE: Do I need a diesel?

For me, it would depend on how much I towed. I got my first RV (only 5k gvw) in 96 and got a gasser cuz I thought a diesel was unnecessary. To make it short... I traded the gasser for a diesel the next year. Craig

RE: Leaf spring upgrade

About 4 yrs ago I replaced my dexter 2600 springs with 3000s that I got at Auto Safety House - a dexter dealer and trailer candy store. They are doing great - best thing I've done for the ride. Craig

RE: 3/4 ton vs 1 ton ride

Get the 1T for the payload. My dually rode worse than my 97 CTD ext cab 3/4T til I worked over the suspension. Both had/have 850 lb hauler beds and airbags. The dually is 1300 lbs heavier so not really apples/apples. I think the extra (trainig wheels) unsprung weight hurts. I doubt if there's a noticeable difference between 3/4T and 1T srw, if everything else is the same. Craig

RE: buying used ?

It's all relative! We've had 3 new and 2 used. 2/3s of the new ones were lower end and the biggest POS I ever saw. I'll take a used mid-upper end over any lower end any day. Our current one was very used (even rented out for a few yrs) and we are very happy with it. Never more than normal maintenance needed. Craig

RE: ATWOOD WATER HEATER

The flame safety module gets a rectified microamp signal thru the flame and spark rod. I also added a gnd. wire between the spark rod and the module to be sure it has a good ground path. Once the burner lights the flame MUST stay in contact with the rod and the burner cuz that's how the module knows it's still burning and it's OK to keep the main valve open. Watch to make sure the flame is staying on the rod. The gas pressure and primary air adjustment must be right so the flame doesn't lift from the burner or lose contact with the rod or else... there goes the ยต amp signal path and the valve slams shut. Cold burners can be fussy! Also make sure the rod tip is where it will ignite the mixture and be in the flame. I always heat those rods to bend them. Some of them are too brittle to bend cold. Craig

RE: Manual Transmission? Yea or Nay?

"I'm just wondering. The first time you have to back UP a hill into a campsite, OR have to stop on a steep grade for a sign or light. How much you will like the stick then. While driving sticks are great. But in heavy traffic, or stopped on steep hills. They ain't so much fun." I guess so, if you aren't good at driving them right. I grew up with class 8s with 2 sticks, 5 & 4s, 4 & 4s etc. daily driving in Denver and the mtns. My first TV was an auto/gasser. It wasn't long before I figured out that mistake. My only fear is that someday I won't be able to find a TV w/o a stick so this 03 might have to last forever! FWIW, I drive a company 04 v10 auto van to work and it's a 4 spd. I like the v10 a lot but it could stand to have more gears for towing. A v10 6 spd manual would be near the top of my list for a gasser TV. I'd be all over that! Craig

RE: Gear Ratio

The lower gears also put the trans gears closer together and make it work easier. I went from a 3.54 CTD to a 4.10 ctd and towing is like night and day easier with the 4.10s. Craig

RE: Supercharged is right!

I had a 2000 GSE 3800 SC Buick (rated 240hp) for a few years and then the wife drove it for a couple more. She traded it for a 2005 305hp G35 and we had a little race just before we turned the Buick in to the dealer. The G35 couldn't get ahead of the Buick! I almost cried when I had to give the keys to the salesman but that Buick was turning into a money pit with the usual GM electronic glemlins. Craig

RE: Roof Vent covers

The first owner put Maxair covers on and they are most likely the older model and they were quite restrictive. I tore out the screen and used a hacksaw blade to cut out every-other louver. Now they flow very well and still keep the rain out. Heigth is another issue. I made a ~2" tall frame to raise the cover over the FF so the fan lid can open all the way. At the time, I didn't know there were different models and mine were in excellent condition so I modified them. I'd buy the right ones if I were starting out fresh and didn't have any covers. Craig
