RE: Get a 2nd opion today...

My guess: Luxated patella, really common in chis and many small dogs. It Doesn't usually show as a puppy, but happens later when the tendon slips out of the groove in the knee that it is supposed to 'ride" in. The groove is so shallow (genetic) that it is easy for the tendon to jump ship. Our little Poquita lived with it for 15 years, no surgery. I learned how to put it back in place (per vet) and we got along like that for her whole life. At 7 yrs of age, we took her to an ortho surgeon vet who took x-rays and said if the tendon is in place at time of x-ray, the problem is not viewable. Knee was in place. That vet advised us to leave it alone but told us she would eventually develop arthritis, which she did. We just accommodated to her at that point and she rode in a stroller for walks the last few years and also was on pain meds as needed. I could tell by looking at her eyes if she need the pain meds. The associated pain/discomfort was so much "her normal" that she still "helped" us by jumping a little when we picked her up until that final trip to the vet. Look up luxated patella on the web. Many dogs lead happy lives in spite of it.

RE: stealth in a excel/wide body?

Just curious about what you mean by stealth? The only time I've heard that mentioned is in relation to parking and HOA rules at the owner's residence. Where would you be parking that it mattered whether it was an RV or a van? Our Excel is noticeable enough that nobody ever backed into it, which is a good thing. We always look for a drive-out type parking space where one is available, but otherwise haven't had a problem. It takes up very little more parking space than our Honda Odyssey.

RE: Tiki goes to Florida

I have known some mini poodles that had that kind of hair trigger, like something wrong with their wiring. Our three year old son received a permanent scar on his face from leaning in too close. The dogs I knew ended up being put down. Sadly, a lot of people just drop them off at a shelter hoping someone else will have better luck. And my experience is not about poodles, as most are total love bugs, but it sure is sad when it happens.

RE: Does stress itch??

Just thinking, is Jack on any pain meds or anything similar? Some of those can cause hives on rare occasions. Our old vet said he once had a dog (client) that got hives so bad from Rimadyl, that he'd had to be put down. Vet said it was the one and only time he'd seen a reaction like that to Rimadyl.

RE: It's Izzys time of year...

My first dog was a cockapoo who absolutely loved corn on the cob. She was an only dog that we got when she was seven weeks old, and we never put butter or anything else on it. Not a learned behavior or doctored up to entice her. She just loved it.
I've also had dogs who, if given the opportunity, would raid a neighboring farmer's field, drag entire stalks of corn home and eat it. Raw and unbuttered, of course.
Interesting, in that a common argument against corn in dog food is that "Nobody ever saw a coyote raid a cornfield." I'll bet it has happened, because ripe corn tastes sweet and juicy. Heck, now I'm wanting some. :W

RE: It's Izzys time of year...

Our Rosie has Izzy's coat with exactly that kind of fawn "ticking" effect, same color, except Rosie's face and head are pure white. The texture on her white is real soft like a cat or bunny and the beige is more coarse. Funny, as she was all white like her tiny chi mom for several years.
I think Susan is right about the eating veggies often being a learned trait. Rosie and Poquita would never touch a veggie until Darcy got here and Darcy eats everything. Now, so does Rosie. Lance, try throwing a little tomato sauce on cooked veggies and watch Calvin make 'em disappear. :W

RE: stealth in a excel/wide body?

We have a 2004 Excel TD and have never had parking problems, but did buy a back-up camera a few years ago because pedestrians in parking lots are scary. We mainly have to watch for height limitations at fast food places, things like that. We're right at 10' high and 20' long. I don't think there are many people who don't see "RV" loud and clear when they look at it, though. The A/C unit is another obvious giveaway, along with the decals. Taking the Excel out brings a lot of questions and lookie-loos but we don't mind.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

I am currently in the middle of a 5-night local camping trip, my first of the season. This morning, while getting ready to leave Chatfield SP for Cherry Creek SP, I raised the electric sunshade on the RV. Shadow, who wanted so badly to see what was going on outside, jumped up on the dash. If there was any doubt Dash sent him to me, this clinched it. Shadow on the dash?

RE: A good day!

Edna was on Pro Plan Senior chicken & rice for years. Then, a couple years ago I switched her to Blue Buffalo Wilderness grain free chicken & rice, adult. Not the slightest problem, which according to new vet is unusual with cats. I guess they don't always switch food brands easily. Edna obviously never read the Cat Handbook. Her treats are not grain free but she's 12 lbs, hasn't gained or lost weight for ages. If it ain't broke....?

RE: A good day!

Ha! She's Edna's twin. Edna will be 17 next month, the longest living cat we've ever had. We got her at five weeks. A year ago Feb we had the new vet do the first bloodwork of Edna's life. Like Sput, liver # was a little off, but that's all. She's had no problems, so we haven't been back. The different thing about Edna is that she has eaten nothing by dry food her entire life. Well, and dry treats. She never would eat canned food or people food. Vet said that's unusual, but okay, as long as she drinks a lot of water, and she does. I notice Edna sleeps about 20 hrs a day. It's okay, we're not that peppy anymore, either. Hope you and we get to keep these old girls awhile longer.

RE: Galley faucet replacement question

We had a neighborhood hardware store fabricate a fitting between the house-type faucet and the RV plumbing. Anybody wanting more info, let me know and I'll get Bud to explain. It sure is nice to be able to fill a thermos or wash something larger than a teacup in the PW galley sink. :B

RE: Galley faucet replacement question

We took the suggestion to install a bar faucet. This is a Moen, purchased on Amazon.

RE: Bear bell for dog?

Reminds me, a few years ago we were taking a nature hike at a preserve near here. The ranger told us that weekend hikers go out there with their dogs all the time, and very often the dog runs off chasing a rabbit, and is never seen again. :E

RE: Does stress itch??

Well, just when I thought we were over the worst of it - Jack went back to water guzzling AND emptied his bladder in the back of my CAR. It' like the prednisone makes him drink too much AND be stupid..... he doesn't even ASK to go out. And then early this evening, he acted itchy again) although not a frenzied as before. If he's still being "weird" tomorrow - we're going back to the vet.
It seems to be his head/face that itches the most
Years ago, we had a poodle that had a little stroke and lost the gauge in his head that told him when he'd had enough water. He would drink until his belly felt like a water balloon and then, of course, he peed everywhere. He was an outside dog so it wasn't quite as disastrous to the environment. He did live a couple more years and got past that water problem but became deaf and crippled with arthritis. He was 16 when we let him go, but in retrospect, we should have done it earlier. :(

Our other dogs SAW Poquita go potty in unauthorized locatons, so even the neutralizer didn't help. Oh, that was a hard few weeks!

RE: Does stress itch??

(SNIP) Now to steam-clean everywhere so the new puppy doesn't think peeing in the house is acceptable behavior - eeeks!
A very valid point! When Poquita became incontinent, the other two dogs apparently thought there were new rules. :E For a month there, the house looked and smelled like a barnyard. We walked barefoot at great peril. I used a drawer full of rags and a whole box of swiffer refills. After 'quita went to Rainbow Bridge, all that stopped, thank goodness. There were a couple of mistakes but we managed to correct them pretty quickly. Whew!

RE: Does stress itch??

Poquita did the "drinking gallons of water and peeing everywhere" thing for the last month of her life. I thought she might be diabetic but the vet said no, it was her liver. We tried a supplement he suggested but it did not help. Poquita was 15, though, and I don't think Jack is that elderly, is he? Prednisone is such a double edged sword..
