Interesting thing going on now, prescription diet has always been a marketing designation rather than a legal one. Some states may vary and many individual businesses require a prescription. There has been a move to make prescription diets prescription under the regulation of the FDA as other prescription items. This may come to pass in the future.
Most prescription diets are not "ideal" diets for general use, but probably not a serious issue in most situations. It's just felt by many that the use should be under the direction of a veterinarian.

If something I am going to give, feed, or apply to my pet is meant to change that pet in some way then I want to consult with my vet before I begin the process. I'm sure you appreciate clients that partner with you Dr. Doug. I appreciate your input and understand your diplomacy. :)

Interesting... I buy non prescription items from Entirely Pets.com all the time but I never attempted to buy something like Renal formula food from them since it is readily available within a few miles and I have a prescription. The price on the website is a little less than what I pay but sometimes shipping charges eat up any savings. I might combine some of the food with a few other items next time I need something and get free shipping.
With that said, I would strongly suggest that anyone wanting to change to this diet to consult with their vet and have their cat examined BEFORE making the change even if you don't need a prescription on some websites.

Good news!
You can buy Royal Canin specialized diet foods out there without a prescription? Wow! You certainly can't around here.I am in the process of changing Higgins (14 or so + now) over to the renal formula now and I might just let Blanca (almost 16) go ahead and eat it too. They love to eat the same food and fuss with each other over it. I buy it from a local agriculture store but I have a prescription for it on file.

What a sweet face. When I look at this picture, I have no doubt that girl knew love.

Working for an International adoption agency I am familiar with some translation processes. Many colleges have translators available for such work. They charge for it, but it is less than companies that do translation work. We've used some local college graduate students with great results and saved our adoptive families some money, too.

It is not always as peaceful as we hope it will be. That can make it harder than it already is.
Deb please don't beat yourself up over any of it. Ike had all those years of love and being the "best dog ever" in your life... what more could a dog ask for? Remember they don't fear the end like we do and can't really process complex information but they know love, and you loved him very - very much. Never fear, he knew that quite well, just as you knew his love. Allow the other memories to overcome the ones of the release from his broken body..... and picture the young Ike that he is once again.

I still have Loppy's beat up & battered hedgehog toy. It was his favorite.
Also I took a very close look at our Pistol Pete last night and realized (once again) that his time with us is dwindling down to a precious few weeks, months, or days. I'll cherish each one just as you cherished Ike.
It's all the little things over the years that are truly the big things.
