RE: West Texas Trip

Tmoore2-Thanks I already have the book. We are at the Texas state line and I visited the tourist bureau. So much information that I am overwhelmed with information
Dave, Know the Hill Country well and can not get enough of it. Missed the Bluebonnets this year. We've been the I-10 route twice to Phoenix and on to Camp Pendleton. We have only been out a week so far this year and wife is ready for the road. I have convinced her that it is going to be hot this time of the year so we have decided to forgo the long trip and spend a couple of weeks in the Hill Country. 10 days in early August to Baton Rouge/Gonzales will satisfy her until early Sept. when we drive by car to witness the birth of our second grandchild and 1st grandson in Delaware. Friends from Baton Rouge will make the W, Texas trip with us in early spring next year.
Stopped at Nick's last week and got some Boudin.:B I believe you have relatives in Pt. Arthur? Cooked a crawfish casserole last night with crawfish from Louisiana. Sure miss our friends and food from Gonzales.

RE: 5th Wheel Hitch-Rails

Installed the old rails on my new truck and had to buy the conversion kit. Tightening the bolts on the new truck is almost impossible, The conversion kit came with belleville washers. They are installed concave side down. Checked them today and they are still as tight as when I installed them.
I worked in a Chlor-Alkali plant prior to retiring and we used Bellevilles for maintaining torque and contact integrity on copper connection bars using 13k DC voltage and temps above 400 deg. F.

WOW-Started to post this article in tow vehicles but didn't feel that it quite fit so I posted it in the ATC forum before The Texan posted. Lasted less than 30 minutes before it was deleted.:h

RE: EcoBoost problems on the Horizon...:?

The "problem" is not new and it's so far anyway been only a tiny fraction of the total built. Some have been purchased back from owners who then have a choice of another Ecoboost or another Ford Engine or take the money elsewhere. 34,000 on mine right now with no signs of any problems. It will have to show itself before I reach the end of my warranty (that's another 66,000 miles) :)
Correct me if I am wrong but I believe you have a 3 year/36,000 bumper-to-bumper and a 5 year/60,000 mile power train.

RE: 5th wheel hitch that attaches to gooseneck ball?

As NC Hauler said, speak to your RV manufacturer before using it. If you can get it in writing, that would be the best but even that may not help. Even in writing, it is only as good as the length of the 5er warranty. Even if Lippert approved it doesn't mean your RV builder would.
Call me anything you want but I would never use a GN hitch on a 5er. I have seen a few in campgrounds and the RV appears to be O.K. I have also seen a few with gaps between the cap and side walls. One campground I was in had a beautiful Heartland Landmark with gaps between the cap and walls that you could stick your fingers in to.

West Texas Trip

Planning on leaving S.E. Texas for a trip out west. We have been to Fredericksburg and surrounding area and will make a stop in the Kerrville area to visit friends and relatives. With the exception of the Kerrville area, we don't care where we go first.
From there we want to go to the Big Bend area, McDonald observatory, Palo Duro, Marfa and points around each. Need suggestions on routes and what to see and do. Campgrounds would be a plus. We are planning on 4 perhaps 5 weeks. Any places where I need to pick up fresh water for camper? I only travel with enough to flush toilets.
Thanks

RE: leaf springs

In addition to the band pointing to the front, the spring is equally centered on the top of the axle.

RE: synthetic trans fluid

Yes-Amsoil makes ATF for the Allison but it is NOT approved by Allison.
Sorry OP, did not mean to hijack your thread.

RE: synthetic trans fluid

I said Amsoil nor Royal Purple are on the ALLISON approved list. Allison is no longer part of GM. They are also not TES-295 but TES-389. That being said, Amsoil and Royal Purple, IMO, should do very well as a synthetic in any transmission.

RE: synthetic trans fluid

Although Dexron VI is a tremendous fluid it is a synthetic blend.
Not if you use Valvoline DEXRON-VI Full-Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid.
You are correct and I knew about Valvoline. A number of people have made blanket statements that Dexron VI is synthetic which is not the case. When researching what synthetic to use in my previous truck I found the Transynd which is made by Castrol and IIRC, was the only true ATF synthetic at that time, Along with Valvoline there may be other brands but I have not researched it.
Neither Amsoil nor Royal Purple are on the Allison approval list. GM may approve them.
I just "bumped" the following from the Class A forum: "Let Me Know if You Have Allison Transmission Fluid Questions"

RE: Water in Fuel

I don't know if your truck will go into limp mode if there is water in your fuel BUT enough water in fuel can wreck you fuel delivery system and cost you $10,000.
I personally know of 2cases of WIF in Ford trucks and the fuel system was wrecked within 2 miles of filling up. Another was a Chevy that never started after filling up. Water was found in the storage tank where 3 trucks filled up at the same time.

RE: synthetic trans fluid

Although Dexron VI is a tremendous fluid it is a synthetic blend. According to the inventor of Transynd, a double drain and fill of the pan will give you all the protection you need.

RE: Why idle?

I left my truck running ONCE to run into a store.
Came back out to a crowd gathered around the truck and a very very
very angry cop with an agenda.
Holding my keys in the air I had to listen to a 10 minute lecture of
trucks left running with keys in it equals teenagers stealing it, running from police, police chases and fatalities....all because of my poor judgement and actions.
I have to admit his lecture hit home and I have NEVER left my truck running since then.
I would have told him to bite me on leaving the keys!
A month ago, someone left their vehicle idling while they ran into the store. Someone drove off with it. When it was found, the owner was ticketed for not removing the keys and securing the vehicle.\

RE: Why idle?

If that delivery man shut that diesel down at every delivery all day long seems it would cause more problems.
UPS drivers shut their diesel trucks off at every stop around here, I bet they know something about long term cost. ;)
Yep-Even the post office shuts theirs down.

I would rather spend a couple of days in Frederickburg, Tx. than Kerrville. Day trip to Kerrville if you have the time.
