RE: Miles per day

When we were both working and needed to be somewhere, like getting home by Sunday night after a Saturday NASCAR race, we would do 500 to 600 miles in a day.
Now that we are retired we pretty much limit it to 200 to 300 miles per day, sometimes we will run a little longer if we both feel like pushing a little farther.
One advantage of our HDT is that long days are nowhere near as tiring as they were when we towed with a pickup.

RE: Newmar question

The difference comes in the materials used, but the build quality is the same. They all have pretty high quality components, but the higher end units tend to be heavier and have more amenities.

RE: RV Storage in Arizona

The summer sun and wind in AZ can be really hard on an RV. I would recommend a lot with covered storage, there seem to be a lot of them around the Tucson area, expect the same would apply farther north.

RE: Any 5th wheel hitch operate exactly like a semi 5th wheel?

Yup, a binkley head is what you are looking for. Trailer Saver hitches use binkley heads.

RE: Towing Mirrors

Get yourself a pair of McKesh mirrors and forget about the built in mirrors. Better in use easy on and off.
Used them for years on our Dodge Ram towing TTs, fiver and box trailers. Now we have a truck with real mirrors.

RE: First ever trip - please comment on our park choices

The most invaluable resource for campground info:
RV Park Reviews
When we are on the road we first look at Passport America parks along our route, then check them out on RV Park reviews. If there are no PA parks we then use RV PArk Reviews to locate a good spot.

RE: 5er Newbie

Watch your mirrors on tight turns, the fiver will track inside the truck. Watch trees at campgrounds. As Renee said, get in the habit of scoping out an exit plan before you pull into a service area or any parking lot.
Most important - enjoy yourself!

RE: Tire pressure readings using a TPMS

Yup, same here. One day last month I looked at the Pressure Pro and 6 of the 8 fiver (2 axle dually) tires were exactly the same! First thought was something must be wrong, they usually vary a couple of pounds.

RE: Removable towing mirror suggestions.

Hands down the best I ever used were McKesh
Easy on and off and virtually vibration free.If I were still towing with a pick-up I would still be using them.

RE: 2 Mths in New Zealand & Australia

Wow, envious here! We spent three weeks in NZ and another week in Australia a few years ago. Love NZ, very laid back atmosphere and not a lot of people outside of the cities.
They drive on the left there, but there is very little traffic outside the cities. We did B&B, no RVing. Lots of outdoor recreation.
We flew from Aukland to Queenstown, well worth a visit, be sure to take the steamer tour on Lake Wakatipu. We stayed at The Stable, very nice.
Milford Sound is worth a visit, we missed out because it was early spring and we could not get in due to snow.
The drive from Queenstown to Haast, then south to Lake Moeraki, was spectacular. Stayed at the Wilderness Lodge, an eco-lodge. Nature hikes to see nesting penguins, etc. Gormat meals as well.
To give you an idea of the remoteness, I was in the lobby late one afternoon and a Highway Patrol officer came in looking for the victims of an auto accident in the area that was reported four hours ago!
From there we drove up the west coast to Greymouth. A number of one lane bridges on the main highway up the west coast, some of them shared with the railroad! Montieth Brewery worth a visit in Greymouth.
From there we took the train across the Alps to Christchurch. Christchurch is a typical large city, but check out Annie's Wine Bar.
Flew back to Rotorura on the North Island. Lots of hot springs and spas. Check out a Zorb while you are there and Kiwi World is worth a visit. We also took a boat ride to White Island where there is an active volcano. You can walk right up to the rim of the volcano!
In Australia do not miss a visit to the Great Barrier Reef! We stayed at Reef Retreat in Palm Cove, nice with great ocean views in some rooms. Boats out to reef leave from Cairns. Check out Reef Teach before going out. We went out one day on a very large Quicksilver catamaran to their floating island on the reef. Very nice, but a large group. Two days later we went out to the reef on the Osprey V, a smaller (and faster) dive boat. That was a more personalized experience.
SO, as I said, we are envious. Have a great time!

RE: Awning question what is too much wind

We never leave it open when we are gone and usually only when we need it for shade. During the winter in AZ our door faces east so we have afternoon shade and don't even bother with the awning.
In Fl in the late spring/early summer a few years ago, with that side facing south, we had it open whenever we were home.

RE: Travel in windy conditions

I suggest sitting out the wind if you can. Coming across Iowa last month there was a stiff crosswind. Our rig handles it very well since the truck weighs almost as much as the fiver and we don't have the side wind resistance of a semi.
Still it was enough to keep me alert and about 5 mph below 62 where I usually run. During the day we saw three semis blown off the road VERY recently and one RV - could not tell if it was a fiver or a TT since it was a pile of kindling stacked on top of the pickup! Very scary and depressing. The trailer was in the median, a semi was on it's side off the right shoulder. No way to tell what happened, but the odds are it was wind effecting one of them

RE: depreciation of travel trailer

We bought a 2005 Newmar Mountain Aire in 2007 (still have it). It was a like new repossessed unit with very little usage and we paid exactly 50% of the original MSRP.

RE: Kindle question

I think the Paperwhite is one of the newest models so I do not think it is going away anytime soon.
We both have Paperwhites and are very happy with them. All we want is an e-reader and this serves the purpose very well. By putting both of them on the same account we can share books. Mine has the 3G connection, Nancy's is WiFi only.
We resisted getting an e-reader because we like books, but the convenience, especially when traveling is worth it. (there are still two boxes of books in the fiver!)
One thing we looked at - and we looked at all of them - was weight. The Paperwhite fit the bill all the way around, usable, light weight, and reasonable price. The battery life is amazing as well.
Probably the only downside is it is too easy to buy books! Currently I have six I'm reading on the Kindle and two or three real books going as well! All depends on what I feel like reading at any given time.
