My loaded camper weight is around 19,500 lbs. The truck weighs 8,500 fueled and ready to go for a combined weight of around 28,000. I am also a little heavy on the pedal. I always run 5-10 mph over the speed limit where I can. I won't be the "speed bump" on the road that everyone is trying to get around. So, I could probably get 8.5 if I slowed down to the speed limit.

Rear end ratio? If its a 3.42 then no. If its a 3.73 o 4.10 you will love it.

My combined is 28K with 3:42 gears. It performs great! 9.5 hand calc average West Coast Towing.
Pulls 6% grades at 55 or more.
So whatever the gear ratio with the size of RV he is talking about will be no problem at all!
That terrable! My 4.10 rear ended dually gets 11.5-12.5 hand calculated all day
You're pretty lucky. My 2010 with 4.10s gets 8 mpg towing my 28K combined. Can't complain about the power, but 8 mpg hurts.
*edited to mention that, like the posts below, I didn't buy the truck for fuel mileage. I complain about it, but the power advantage far outweighs the fuel mileage issues. It takes fuel to make that power.

I grew up near Wichita living there for the first 23 years of my life. I think I have seen 2 tornados. I saw more tornados in the 8 years I lived in Oklahoma City. May is a big month for tornadoes in both OK and KS. As a matter of fact, May 3rd and 5th are two days that stick out in my mind for large, long track tornadoes in OK with the May 3rd, 99 tornado missing our house by a couple blocks. KS and OK are very similar for tornado chances. I wouldn't sweat it, your chances of actually seeing one is slim to nearly none. I actually would like to be a storm chaser some day, it would be so energizing, but my wife would never allow it.

I have a 2010 mega cab with a Dutchmen Voltage. I have a B&W Companion (non-slider) and the front cap doesn't get that close to my cab. It works fine.

Same here. No need to put anything on them. I've never worn anything out in MILES of towing.

Most have a very wide angle of view. My recommendation, and the way I have mine, is to lower it just low enough to see about 5 feet or so behind the camper so you can back up to things without making contact. The wide view of the lense will also allow you to see 100 feet or more behind you. I can see cars back 8 or 10 car lengths. It works real well. It also lets you see to the sides for cars in the adjacent lanes as they pass.

That's a very good question you've asked and it raises another question for me. I've had two different brake controllers since I started towing our FW three years ago, the first being of the inertia type. I've never noticed a difference when testing the manual control of either one. After properly adjusting the brakes and testing at about 20mph, the trailer brakes activate and slow it, but I could not get the wheels to lock up with either controller. Since I've only had the one FW for only three years, I've always thought the brakes were operating correctly. So my question is, should a brake controller ever be able to lock up FW brakes on a normal asphalt surface?
Of my 3 fifth wheels I've owned, I have never been able to lock the wheels on any of them. I've had both Prodigy and Dodge integrated controllers. I was always told that it was because the trailers were very heavy. I can, however, lock the wheels on both my horse, flatbed and stock trailers. So, I know it's not the controller.
I run my controller on the '10' (max) setting all the time with my toy hauler. It is sufficient and is actually a nice braking, pretty much matched to my trucks brakes. With my other trailers I have to turn it down to 5 or lower or the wheels will skid.
BTW, my toy hauler is brand new with less than 1500 miles on it. I was told how to break in the brake pads when I picked it up and I did it as I was told. Did the same with my previous 5th wheel and still not that good. The repair facility called the maker of the brakes and axles to make sure everything was right. They even re-wired the wires to the brakes to make sure it wasn't a wiring issue. Some are better than others I guess.

I use Vornado heaters in my 42 foot toyhauler to augment the gas funace. They are quiet and do an awesome job of circulating the air. I run them pretty much nonstop all winter and they hold up well.
I also run a flat extension cord thru a back window that goes directly to the campsite electric plugs so that I don't put extra strain on the camper's electrical system. Before I did that, I could only run one heater at a time and would occasionally blow a breaker if I used anything more than the low setting while using the microwave, etc. The windows are frameless and seal around the flat cord really well.

Yeah, I'd be nervous hooking our Freightliner on to mine too. I'm sure it would be fine as long as I didn't try to go somewhere my pickup wouldn't, but still.

Aaron, Joe's correct. Take the screws out of your return air vents in the ceiling and they are there. Mine had lots of saw dust caught in them.
My bathroom vents weren't blowing strong so I took one down. The factory had used a hole saw to cut the hole and left the cutout up in there. I took it out and what a difference. But, it blew sawdust out for quite a while after. I went around to make sure they hadn't left any other cutouts up in the ducts.
Have you used the Mack to pull the Voltage yet?

Dodge....any Idea where to get the slot mounted strip?
If you want to mount close to the camper, could you run the power cord down the awning rail on the camper.?
I was talking with LEO's RV from Gambrills MD. They said they keep them in stock.
The one's I saw had the cord run thru the arms into the skin of the camper. Not sure where they were connected to power beyond that. Those were factory mounted. They did mention just running the cord to an external receptacle on the camper. I haven't looked that deep into how I will wire them yet.

They do have slot mounted LED strips. If you can get to the slots at the end of the tube you should be able to retrofit with them. They slide right in and are actually inside the tube and don't stick out. If the slot isn't open on the end, you would either have to get a new tube or use 3M stick on strips attached to the roller-according to the parts guy that was there. I want the 3M stick on strips to place on the awning right where it attaches to the side of the camper (on the underside shining down) That way they can be used even if the awning is rolled up. The dealer I was talking to said they stock them. The fun part is figuring out where to run the cord and where to wire them in.

We went to the Timonium show today. I was impressed with how many campers they had crammed in there. We were just looking, specifically at bunk houses and they had quite a few. Was hoping for more accessories though. I really like how LED light strips are being used under the awnings on the new ones. I need to retrofit mine with those. $100 for 10 1/2 feet strip and $150 for 16 feet.

Dang Aaron, you make me jealous. I am still running an old '98 Century. It has nearly 600,000 miles on it but is still going strong with it's Series 60 Detroit. It don't rattle or squeak, so guess we'll keep it a little longer. Nice truck there!

We are in southern Maryland. I'm more worried about mine blowing over. I've put down the 6 point levelers and filled the main water tank for more weight (and water if we need it). Keeping my fingers crossed it stays upright!

It sounds like what you have is a Trail-Aire with the Tri-Glide lower jaw. This is an option that is designed to eliminate chucking. It should have 3 grease Zerks down each side for a total of 6 and an additional three more Zerks inside. Going in from the back you will see three crossbars inside. These each have a fitting as well. All 9 of these Zerks need a shot of grease every 1,000 miles or so. This may help to smooth it out. Pulling it using your Dodge integrated brake control is causing the problem. I have the same. The brake control releases the brakes too soon when stopping and the trailer slides ahead as you stop. Try holding the brake control on manually until you stop. This will eliminate the bump. Replacing the junk Dodge controller with a P-2 or P-3 (which can be done) will eliminate the problem. There is only an adjustment on the Ram for gain you cannot set when the brakes come on or release..

Thank you. It is the Tri Glide (didn't know there were others besides the tri glide). I will try to grease it up real well. I know what you mean with the controller, it is smooth and integrates well, but wish it had more adjustments. My controller will also set the trailer brakes harder when I hit a bump while braking causing an intermittent jerk from the trailer. It's annoying.

It's definitely the plate that sits on your fifth wheel hitch and holds the king pin. I can move the plate back and forth with my hands when the trailer is unhitched.

TrailAir Pin box question

I just wanted to throw this out and see if anyone else experiences the same with their TrailAir. The plate that the king pin is attached to moves forward and backward about an inch. When I start and stop, that plate moves forward or backward to the stop and makes a loud bump. Is there a way to lock the plate so it will not move? It seems to be made that way to cushion the fore and aft movement when the trailer surges over bumps. I can't imagine it doing my hitch any good slamming back and forth. The hitch in the truck is rock solid as well as the rest of the pin box attached to the camper.

Our last trailer was an '06 Crossroads Cruiser. We were impressed with the company when we had problems. Customer service hooked us up with a dealer in the area we were in and set up an appointment for us for when we arrived. The camper was well made. Our next will probably be a Crossroads again.
