RE: bone spurs

I had arthroscopic for that 1 year ago. I wore a shoulder immobilization device and slept in a recliner for 6 nights. Went to physical therapy for about 3 weeks, did prescribed home/office exercises 2-3 times a day for another 6 extra. I had constant pain before and have none now. I did follow the therapists suggestions on changing some work and sleep position habits to prevent a recurrance. I am very happy I had it done. Obviously every situation is different but my pain/discomfort level was low enough I only took 1 pain pill the 1st night. I do enjoy a beer before, during and after dinner so that could have influenced my need for pain medication somewhat. But beer is cheaper and tastes better. ;) Hope you make the right decision for you. Greg

RE: Newbie Questions on Trip Planning - Campgrounds

Rodder: Congrats on joining the crazy group of RVers out here. My wife and I have always followed a simple plan to choose a CG or RV park. Once we determine where we are going (including overnight stops) we search the Trailer Life CG directory for that locale. We pick the CG that has the highest Bathroom rating 1st with Facilities rating 2nd. If they care enough to keep their bathrooms clean the rest is easy. We have stayed in some that were in beautiful locations and others downtown. The ones close in town have often been cleaner and better run. They just did not have the VIEW. We use the tow vehicle to tour the area for views. We prefer to overnight in well run clean places. Woodalls has a good directory too. rvparkreviews.com is another great rating service to reference. Just remember that if the bathrooms and showers are kept spotless you will be happy. Most GC's and RV parks have some sort of small store so if you forgot the ketchup don't worry. Greg

RE: grilling shrimp

I mix about 2 tablespoons of Extra virgin olive oil and about a 1/2 cup of balsamic vinegar. As I peel and de-vein the shrimp I toss them in this. When done I toss to thoroughly coat and thread on bamboo skewers that have soaked in water for 1/2 hr or more. I sprinkle 1/2 of the skewers with Famous Daves hamburger seasoning (it's heavy on the garlic) and the other some Creole spice mix. I like the creole kick and DW the garlic. Place on hot grill for about 3 minutes a side and you are done. If you get the big jumbo shrimp they may take longer to grill. Greg

RE: Colorado hwy 160

Thanks all for your help. It's very nice to get the skinny from those who have "been there/done that". We'll take that route on the way home next summer and free up some space on I-70 for the truckers. To quote a "not" so famous camper; damn the mosquitos, fir trees ahead.:) Okay, that was cheesy. Safe travels nonetheless!! Greg

Colorado hwy 160

Hi fellow nomads. Does anyone know what type of conditions to expect on Colorado Hwy 160 between Cortez and Walsenburg? We are planning a trip to southern Utah next summer and I'd like to tour sites in the four corners area before going home. We're pulling a 4000lb popup with a Ford Expedition. That route would be the most direct back to Kansas and looks to be very scenic. Is it 2 lane or 4? If 2 lane are there plenty of pullover areas so I do not block others? Any help is appreciated. I'll check the Colorado DOT dite in January for projected roadwork in 2010 too. Thanks Greg

RE: What is your campfire profile?

We bought a Fire Dancer and optional ceramic logs and could not be happier. Once dusk arrives the only way you can tell it is propane vs wood is the lack of smoke and smell. It's small, easy to pack and if you moderate the height of the flame will get over an hour of burn per lb of gas. Wife loves it for smores, hot dogs etc. and I for the campfire. You can shut a propane fire off and go to bed at your convenience. With wood you need to plan ahead. We were in Yosemite area 2008 and the county had a fire ban. RV park host said we were good to burn our propane fire. Greg

Compton Ridge Campground, Branson Mo.

Hi All: We just got back from a 3 day weekend there. We are happy with the changes the new owner has made since aquiring the park from Legacy. I complimented the new owner on that and asked how the transition has gone. He said they are still trying to get unhappy customers back from the changes Legacy made. I promised to pass it on. He did say they were planning to continue improvements. Yes, I am aware that I can post to RV park reviews etc. I like posting feedback here instead. Greg

Question about ad for magnetic electricity generators

Hi: Last night I clicked on an ad that was on the forum about magnetic electricity generators. That led me to a general search on the subject. Is this a hoax or just means to sell high $ how to manuals? I tried to research but could not find anything other than testimonials and "how to" books for sale. I remember all the 50 mile per gallon carborater rumors from the 60's. Those made for some lively conspiracy discussions (as if we don't have enough of those in the US already). Are these free electricity generators the next 50 MPG carb? ;) Just a lowly cook in the big pot of life.

RE: Best Holiday park in Chattanooga, Tn.

Have stayed twice. Most recent was June this year. Sites are tight as previously stated but the park is neat, clean and has nice facilities. There is some type of race track close so it could be noisy until about 10:30. Other than that its convenient to the interstate and many attractions. We would stay again if back in Chattanooga. Greg

RE: Any mattress ideas?

My Mother in law had a feather bed she bought that did not fit what she wanted it for. Couple years back we invited her on a short trip to a tourist trap with us. We warned her the bunk ends were less than soft and we used sleeping bags to take the edge off. She brought the feather bed which fit the Niagra bunk end perfectly. On arriving home she remarked that she had slept well and we should keep the feather bed since she had no use for it at home. It really makes a difference. I suspect it's very similar to the egg crate foam most are speaking of. I'd suggest the foam or a feather bed. You'll not regret it in the morning. Greg. P.S. She went on a 4 day trip with us this past month. We made do with a sleeping bag for cushion. She got the feather bed. Her back has been giving her trouble of late but not during the trip.

RE: FURANCE FILTER

these furnaces are designed to run a certain volume of air through the furnace and ducts to maintain effectiveness and keeping the heating pot cool and not melting. You put a filter in and the filter gets plugged with dirt, YOU are looking for a problem to develop and YOU will be sorry. Well, keeping the "pot" cool is needed but it won't melt. There is a high-limit switch that protects the heat exchanger (pot) and that will open and shut down the gas. Switches, like any device can fail. While a limit switch failing is rare I have had it happen to me. These units were designed by mechanical engineers. If they would be improved with a filter then the engineers would have included that. I feel that an RV furnace is the one appliance you do not want to "mod". Fires and or carbon monoxide are nothing to risk. Ok, now the disclosure. I'm a risk averse wus! A decent cook but bad chef :D Greg

RE: A/C Recommendations

We had a 7-1/2" low profile Carrier installed new on our Niagra so it would clear the garage door and roof beams. The unit has performed very well including a very recent humid stay in Orlando and Vicksburg. The better half has pesky little moments of hormone furnace fluctuations due to having reached 31 for the (OOPs can't repeat how many times). The only problem we had was the filters can clog fairly quickly which can cause coil icing. This results in dripping of condensate from the control panel. It occured twice before I remembered that clogged filters can cause blockage on any AC unit. A 2 minute cleaning solved the problem and I now inspect them at the start of every stay. It takes about 30 seconds. The filters are a permanent type you can gently rinse and rub lint out of. I'd buy another one. Greg

Dometic Sea/Land Toilet seal

Hi All: I have to replace the seal on the ball valve that seats to the opening in the bottom of the porcelain bowl. This trailer is only 3 years old with perhaps 80 days of use during those 3 years. When not in use it has been kept with enough moisture in it to keep the seal from drying out. I use RV antifreeze for long periods of disuse or a mix of antibacterial soap and water for shorter terms. We used the trailer 3 times this year. 1st 2 all worked perfect. Last time bowl will not hold moisture. Is it common for those seals to last only 3 years? The trailer is stored in a climate controlled garage when not in use. Just looking for additional experience. Thanks. Greg

RE: Chattanoga, Tn.

Another vote for the Holiday Trav-L park. Very convenient to the interstates. Clean and well managed. Can't speak about the bath facilities as we typically only use ours. But the rest of the park, while tight, is well maintained and friendly. What to see? That depends upon your tastes. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting all of the area civil war parks, museums and battlefields. Wife and kids (when they were little) really enjoyed Ruby Falls and Rock City. Both are major tourist traps but then what isn't? They are still a decent site to see. My one regret is not getting to their aquarium. I have heard that it is very highly rated and thought of by aquarium fans. We've never stayed more than 2 days there so I have yet to see it. Next time for sure. I know there are lots of other things around there. Race or Drag strip near I-15. It is close to the Holiday park but seems to quiet down by 10:pm. Greg

RE: Why do they let stupid people drive trucks?

Stupid drivers come in all forms and shapes. It is grossly unfair to imply that only trucking companies allow stupid drivers. Some years back I did a 6 year stint in local cartage (major metropolitan area), 4 driving 2 dispatching. Pulling on to an interstate at a bad time PALES in comparison to the number of times I saw makeup being applied (sun visor mirror lit!), papers being read (draped over the steering wheel)and clothes being put on AT 65mph in RUSH HOUR traffic. Men and women were about equal in the incidents I witnessed. Now that cell phones and texting are added to the mix I am considering buying stock in antacid manufacturers. There is a large increase in stupid driver accidents looming and insurance adjusters will sleep less. Greg

RE: Favorite End Of Day 'Adult Drink'

If you are providing; then it must be the best that you have. It better be good too. If I am providing then it depends upon my mood: Cheap mood (summer) = whatever beer was on sale this week. Treat myself mood (summer) = Boulevard (local brewery) double wide IPA or unfiltered wheat. Cheap mood (winter) = beer on sale or a bourbon and water n ice. I do have a bourbon and eggnog during the holidays too. Treat myself mood (winter) = Carlsburg or St Pauli Girl beers and Canadian Mist over the rocks with water. The Canadians know how to blend a smooth whiskey. I am more than happy to taste test anything YOU have in case you need a 2nd opinion. :B Greg

RE: What do you do when you're not camping?

I am very fortunate to work for a great boss so I really have to concentrate on not abusing my "slack" time. I'd hate to give him a reason to cut me loose before our retirement plans/finances are better. Howwweeeevvver, I have times where I need a mental break. Those times are perfect for checking out the national park service websites and all the web cams. When we planned our last Yellowstone trip (went in July) I started checking the web cams daily around january 1st. I also like to check cities that we plan to stay in or near for web cams. Colorado is full of them. It gives you an idea of what scenery to expect. Google the state or area you plan to be in and search web cams. You can check internationally too. London has a large network of traffic cams that are real time. Greg

RE: Cost to Repack Wheel Bearings

Just picked up the trailer today. Had bearings repacked, lift mechanism lubed, brakes done (one shoe was cracked), 2 new tires (think I have a bent axle)and had the propane topped off. Total not including tax was $508.00. Labor on the ticket was 3 hours at $85.00 per hr. I used to do all my own oil changes, brakes and bearings. I value my personal or non-work time a lot more now than in the past. I could not have done all of the work above and what I could would take a lot more time. Yes $85.00/hr seems high but their overhead "ain't cheap" either. My dealer is in Missouri in case you wish to compare hourly rates. Greg

RE: Vicksburg, Ms. Campgrounds

We stayed at the Ameristar for 2 nights, 5 weeks back. The sites are level, paved and easy to get in and out of. No shade to speak of but we went to tour the town and historical sites. It wasn't up to Rafter J (Keystone SD) standards from a scenery or amenities point of view but user friendly and worth the price. There is a Sports Bar and Grill in the Old town (the Warehouse on Washington ST I believe) that had a very good Bacon Cheeseburger and ("wicked good :B") fried pickles. The only downside was it was they did not have a non-smoking section. I'd eat there again anyway tho. The battlefield tour and museum are excellent. That said, take some spray Deet or bug repellent. A good portion of the park is not mowed regularly so walking to markers to read are in tall grass. Have a good time. Greg

I'm a guy. Vacuum? Whats a vacuum? :) I run water over them and gently rub the moist lint off. That seems to do the trick. Greg
