RE: Leaving travel trailer/5th wheel year round in US Southwest

In March we decided that we had had enough of towing and purchased a 5th wheel that we left down in an RV Park 30 miles east of Yuma. We are fortunate that for $25. per month we can store it on our site, no need to move it to a storage area. We have AZ tag and insurance for RV from a broker in Yuma. We were told by the RV resort that we had to have AZ tag as inspectors do come by and check. We purchased the RV from someone who also left it in Yuma but they had never tagged it and they had no problems. Although they had the title, they had never registered it in AZ. The original tag was from SD, don't know if this makes a difference. We also pay a preimum for truck insurance in Canada as we are in the US for more than 90 days. We have no intention of bringing the RV back to Canada, once we don't go down in the winter, we will put the 5th wheel up for sale.

RE: Proposed Immigration rules for Snowbirds

Medical coverage is something to think about also wonder if it would effect CPP and OAS, don't think that my company pension would be a problem. Also the cost of additional insurance might get very expensive.

RE: why would you do that?

I am one who uses the bath house mainly because I like long very hot shower and can't get that with 6 gal hot water heater. I also like the added space to get changed. The RV park that we stay in keeps the shower area very clean and probably less than 6 people a day use it so you never have to wait or feel rushed.
I would not do this in just any RV park, they have to be modern and very clean looking.

RE: Rust-Oleum Restore reviews ?

We have used this on our deck in Calgary last year and so far it has held up very well. The color has held up but have a few comments, first this stuff is expensive and we did not get the coverage that they stated, we kept having to go back for more to complete the job and the other thing is that it is rough on bare feet and when we had our dog, she did not particularly like walking on it, she was however 16 years old and perhaps her pads were tender.
One other thing is that it is hard to clean as the dust etc. sticks to the surface and you will need to hose or powerwash.
Would I use it again, probably not.

RE: Buying an RV from Dealer vs Private Owner

As previously stated no sales tax in Az if purchased privately. I know this as I have purchased and registered in AZ.

RE: Buying an RV from Dealer vs Private Owner

We recently purchased from a private sale, we are not new to RVing and did checkout what was available from dealers, but honestly their asking prices were quite high and did not provide much if any after purchase warranty. One other consideration for us was from a private sale - no sales tax, from the dealer, we bought in AZ and are leaving it there, -approx. 10%.
We ended up getting what we are very pleased with, at a price that we were very comfortable with, so to answer your question, private sale was best for us.

RE: Our new pup

Know how you feel, we lost our 16 year old in Feb. Looks like you have chosen a great looking pup, congrats. We are still in the process of looking for another true friend but not a puppy. Everyday I check the city pound and various rescue places, I know one day we will find a fit for us.
Have fun and enjoy your new memeber of the family, I know two weeks will seem like a longtime to the kids. Hope that you continue to post more pictures when the big day arrives.

RE: Typical emergency road service?

On our way back from AZ in Shelby MT we pulled into the Town Pump and all suddendly no power steering, no power brakes and steam coming from under the engine hood, (blown water pump) we were pulling our 25 ft trailer.
Called AAA and tow truck was sent, we unhooked the trailer and the truck was towed to a fantastic facility, (Brian's Mechanic) and then the tow truck came back and towed the trailer to Lewis & Clark RV Park. All of this happened within an hour. We were very thankful that we have RV plus on our membership and that we broke down where we did, although it meant that we had to stay an additional day in Shelby, the service and cost of repairs certainly made up for this inconvience. Everyone from the town truck driver, the garage and RV Park were super!
We have had great service from AAA,CAA in both Canada and the US. When we broke down in Valleyview a few years ago, we had similar service.

Solved Our Towing Problems

We have just returned from AZ with our TT for the last time! This trip took 7 days, due to bad weather, winds and finally a water pump failure. I just hate towing, and I am not doing the driving, so we fianlly decided that enough was enough and purchased a Montana fifth wheel that we have left down in AZ and will only have to tow our small trailer with our Razor down this fall. Saying that, how do folks who have Montana's like them. Ours is a 2005 with rear kitchen that has not really been towed very much, at least that is what we were told. Really looking forward to next fall.
Found a great RV park outside of Yuma where we can leave our unit, on our site for the summer ($25.00 per month) and then come November monthly fees (190.00 + elec) for the winter months. Great park managers, and plenty of ATV trails just outside the park.

RE: DW won't drive

When DH retired and decided to get an RV, I told him from get go that that was fine but I would not be driving it. It has been over ten years, and I have never attempted to even move our various RV's that we have had, a C Class, Truck camper, TT and fifth wheel. WE have travelled probably 50,000 miles and there has never been a discussion about me driving and that is going to stay that way!
If something did happen, would hire someone to get us home.

RE: Quartzsite AZ snowbirds - returning??

We will probably go for a day trip but that is it, the comforts of our RV Park in Tacna is far more appealing than Q and really does not cost that much!

RE: How old?

Not willing to give up RVing but change the way we do things. DH will be 70 this year, and I will be 65, we really do not like towing so this year before returning home for the summer, we bought a 5th wheel and left it down at our site near Yuma. This way we can still enjoy the RV life in our park and not have to worry about snow and wind going down and coming back home. This year, it took us 7 days to come home due to wind and snow, thankful that we will not have to do that again. We still have a TT that we can use for short trips but as for touring the country, we will do that in our truck and stay in motels when necessary.

Gift For Park Manager - Cigar Help

We would like to send some cigars as a thank you for all his help but have no idea what kinds are the best and where to order them from. He really enjoys his cigars so think that this would be a nice surprise for him.
Know that there must be someone out there that could make some suggestions.
Thanks

Updating Bedroom

We just bought a new to us 2005 Fifth wheel. I really love the layout but the bedroom needs some updating. Presently there is a flowered bedspread and the head board is flowers and looks like it could use a good cleaning.
Was wondering what others have done to update the look to something more fresh and modern. Has anyone removed the headboard or recovered it, made new drapes, etc.
Thanks for your help.

Dick's Towing Yuma - GREAT SERVCE

Yesterday we purchased a used fifth wheel to leave down in AZ thus putting an end to towing back to Calgary. We needed someone to move our new purchase from Yuma to Tacna and after searching for almost a whole day, we came upon Dick's Towing . From the initial call and discussion with Julie to the actual move that Bryan did for us, this company proved to be a very positive experience for us. We called them and within 40 minutes they were at the park, helped with the last minute unhooking that needed to be done and had us installed in our new location within two hours or so. They were polite, professional and our first time experience with a fifth wheel was very positive. Thanks again Julie and Bryan!

Summer Storage Question

We just purchased a fifth wheel and are planning to leave it in AZ for the summer. What should we do when it is time to store it. Know the usual things, like cleaning and storage of dry goods, but what else should we be doing . We have that silver stuff for the windows and wheel covers but is there anything else that we should get, we will be storing our unit on its site in the Resort, no shade unfortunately.
Thanks

As a suggestion, I would add some onion and cloves, that is what I do, but I do not put garlic in.
