RE: Proper method to lift trailer for tire removal

I just place a block of wood under the good tire and pull up onto it raising the bad one off the ground If you are in the position to hookup and move the 5vr this method is by far the easiest and safest IMHO.

RE: Sign

On I-65 in Kentucky there is a sign that reads "Used Cows For Sale". Guess they don't carry new ones.

RE: losing a friend

It basically stems from their prior life. Remember that they are bred for one basic thing and that is racing. Many of the norrmal innoculations and meds are not provided as it will show up as doping on the blood tests banning them from the track. Life at the track isn't a "bed-of-roses" for them. They live in tiny cages considering their size, getting out only for exercise and racing. If they don't perform they are basically discarded like a useless rag. Most are euthinized if no group steps in to "rescue" them. It's a real shame as they are very beautiful, loving dogs. If you want a loving companion check out your local Greyhound Society, but keep in mind that they can be very expensive to care for due to their health issues. All of our's have had various problems from slipped discs to heart conditions, kidney problems and yes tumors, but we loved every minute we had with them. Also a prerequisite for adopting one is that you have a fenced in yard thet they can exercise in safely. They are in the sight hound breed and will run forever chasing a rabbit, squirrel, cat, etc.

RE: losing a friend

We feel your pain. One of our Greys, CiCi, suffered basically the same problem. One day she was fine and the next she couldn't stand, was throwing up and dazed. We had to take her in and have her put down. The tumor had ruptured. Our first Grey, Clintwood had a stroke and had to be put down. Big Mac, our remaining male, has kidney problems and we are watching him very carefully. Sarah has a heart condition but she's a lively little girl. Greys are highly susseptible to many health issues but the love they provide are worth the effort you put into them.

RE: How far can you drive on a flat?

Have had two flats, both times within sight of an exit ramp. First time tried to drive on the emergency lane at 5 mph and paid dearly for it. Tire came apart and tore up the fender. Second time I immediately pulled over and waited for Good Sam emergency to change it out. My suggestion is pull over and get the tire changed before continuing on.

RE: Big Mac

Sarah, our little girl, was set to go on the track when her tests showed she had heartworms. That ended her career before it even got started. Reason was she was not given heartworm shots or meds as a puppy. One of her favorite pasttimes is playing soccer. We will put her muzzle on and give her a soccer ball and she will proceed to bounce the ball around the yard. She'll put her nose under the ball and then throw it into the air and hit it again before it hits the ground. Left alone she would go on indefinitely but we have to watch her real careful and stop her after a short time otherwise she could have a heart attack. We work with rescue groups and have learned a lot about the life these precious dogs have while at the track. It's not a life of luxury. We have adopted 4 so far and each of them have had medical problems stemming from there track life. But they are worth every penny we have to spend on them as they are wonderful loving companions.

RE: Big Mac

Update: After careful consideration and consultations with vet Big Macs surgery has been put on hold. He's been on heavy duty anti-biotics for a week now and he's a new dog. He's put back on the weight he had lost and back to running in the yard and actually playing in the house. For those of you who are not real familiar with greyhounds, especially retired racers, their immune systems are very low as they are not given the normal immunizations other dogs get when they are young. They have to go through drug tests at the tracks to prevent "doping". Therefore surgeries can be devistating to them. Plus with his age he has even more going against him. We'll be keeping a close watch on him and hopefully he'll be able to continue as is without the extra stress that surgery would place on him. Thank you all for your concern.

RE: Dogs and Time Change (or lack thereof...)

They still want to go out at their regular time no matter what that clock says. Also when the stomach says it's time to eat, "IT'S TIME". Don't care what some stupid clock says.

Big Mac

Big Mac, our 13 year old Greyhound, has developed kidney and bladder problems. He will be going in for surgery Tuesday morning for biopsies and possible removal of obstructions that showed up on scan. Being this old it will be touchy but he's a fighter and survivor. He beat leukemia several years ago. Please wish him luck and we'll keep you updated.

RE: Has anybody ever replaced the couch in their fiver?

In our Westport we replaced the sofa bed with a futon. Takes up less space when folded out for sleeping and much more comfortable since we also bought an upgraded mattress with it. It has a tubular frame allowing space below it for a couple of plastic containers for clothes storage for anyone sleeping there.

RE: Beds too short!

Replace it with a quality futon. We did this in our Westport 5vr and daughter and SIL who now have the unit are still using it. It has a tubular frame and we bought an upgraded mattress. Quite comfortable and good length. Also takes up less room when extended for sleeping than a fold down couch does.

RE: did you take anything out? what didn't you need in the RV

Cast iron dutch oven, dress-up clothes, and camp stove come to mind right now.You put dress-up clothes in a camper/RV?????:E Yes, we do. There are times we might want to go somewhere that ragged jeans or shorts don't fit in. As for removing un-needed items we removed the table and chairs and replaced it with a computer desk. Never used the table for eating anyway.

RE: Split bath or enclosed bath

We've had both and after obtaining our current one would be hard pressed to go back to a split bath. Our current bath is located in the lower level just below the steps which allows for a much larger bedroom. Unfortunitely Fleetwood who made it went belly up so you'd be hard pressed to find one like it now. As for moisture as long as you open the vent and run the fan while showering there doesn't seem to be any problem. You'll see just as much vapor in the split setup if you don't use the vent and it will tend to migrate into the bedroom area. We've even looked at motorhomes and prefer the single bedroom layouts as they tend to provide more privacy in the bedroom. With the split floorplan I always felt as though I were sitting in a public toilet with the narrow walls surrounding me. But basically it all boils down to the floorplan of the rest of the 5vr that you should consider as that is where you'll be spending the majority of you indoor time.

RE: Has anyone ever modified there bedroom to fit a King Bed..

As far as getting the mattress in they did not build your 5vr around the queen size mattress you now have. All mattresses flex. It's the box spring on normal beds that are solid. Your 5vr's bed in no doubt the same as all. Just a box that the mattress lays on. The only problem I see that you may incounter is whether or not you have ample room to expand the foundation box to accommodate the king mattress.

RE: Photo of RVing, NOT camping...

We stayed there about a year and a half ago and stayed in the spot next to the one you shown in. It was really windy when we set up and the guy in your spot actually thanked us for parking there as he was in a much smaller TT and we cut down on the wind for him. Great place to stay. Great casino, good food and easy walking distance to it all. Thanks for the memories.

RE: How Many?

Depending on how long you full-time in your driveway you'll start realizing pretty quickly what you use and what you don't. We've been at it for over a year now waiting on retirement and we're still getting rid of stuff. It's amazing how much you can stuff in cubbyholes and tend to forget.

RE: Retirement

Lately, since I lost my wife, my fiver stays rather permament on my property. I live it in. I travel and enjoy the rest of the world with my camper. I expect someone will find me dead some day in my rv. If it is any of you, please hook my truck up to the fiver and pull me to the nearest veterans cemetary and bury us all together. We are also living in our 5vr on our property until I retire taking trips when we can. After retirement we hope to travel but not be "on the road" all the time. Our hopes are to be able to stay in one spot for a while then moving on after checking out all the things available in the area. When and if we are no longer able to continue hopefully we'll have found a spot we like well enough to put out the anchor and continue to live in the RV. We both wish to be cremated but have no real plans as what to do with our ashes yet. After living in ours for over a year we feel it would be hard for us to adjust to living in a sticks ans bricks again.
