RE: CO/Propane detector

I have found that when the water heater anode is about used up I get terrible smelling gases from the hot water taps before water starts coming out. I don't know if the fumes will set off the propane alarm because I bleed the air from the bedroom sink and the propane alarm is in the kitchen.

RE: Bugs on the front of the 5th wheel from traveling

We have survived two trips to Alaska with our fifth wheel. I start with a good wax job, then wash the front of the trailer every night when we stop. A one-gallon pump-up spayer provides enough water to soak and rinse the bugs. A long handled brush loosenes the bugs. For particularly tough ones, I stand on the pickup bed and use a dryer sheet. The clue is to do it every evening before the bugs get baked on. Don't forget what insects do to your radiator. I bought plastic door screening and cut it to size with a pair of scissors to fit over the grill. Plastic ties held it in place.

RE: 5th wheels vs motor homes

We have had two mini motorhomes, three fifth wheels and one class A motorhome. At this time we have a fifth wheel. Cost of insurance is one of the things that drove us out of the motorhome. Another is that it was 102 inches wide. Many of the roads we travel, and parks we stay in are not designed for such wide vehicles. Our next RV will probably be a pull trailer. You can have a true walk-around bed without an extra slide.

RE: Overdrive...

My Allison runs much cooler in tow haul on long upgrades. Tow Haul is designed to protect your transmission. I doubt it causes an increase in fuel useage. In fact at times I can feel the torque converter lock up when I engage TH. It feels like shifting up another gear. Yes, I tow with tow haul.

RE: Do you use a slider hitch with your short bed??

Had a non-slider in my last truck. Punched out the rear window in my cab once. With my current rig, I got the slider. Used it twice in seven years. Good insurance.

RE: Parking on concrete?

I place 2 X 12 boards beneath the tires to insulate them from the super-heated concrete here in the desert. I also use them to level when camping.

RE: Refrig not as cold during hot weather

I also installed a computer fan to help move air around the hot coils and exit through the roof chimney. Also I found a temperature adjustment inside the lower compartment that adjusts by sliding a metal clamp up or down to change the temperature. It is easy to overlook this "thermostat."

RE: camper fire

One evening I drove about 25 miles on very rough washboard roads on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. Stopped at a truck stop in Winslow to dump tanks. Smelleld propane. Opened the trailer and was almost overwhelmed by the odor. Found that the propane connection from one of the tanks had worked loose and was leaking propane. Had I parked and gone into the restaurant it is very likely the fumes would have been ignited by the refrigerator and my unit would have been lost.
