RE: Diesel Truck-What would you buy?

Congratulations Gappy and wishin' y'all many years of great campin' trips with your new combo !
Thanks much!!
Brought the new trailer home tonight. I could tell real quick in the short 20 mile drive home that this truck is a serious tow monster. Wow what fun, can't wait for spring break and the road trip to the gulf.

RE: Diesel Truck-What would you buy?

Well I too drive school bus and the Allison trannys are the biggest improvment since diesel power but Iam pretty sure they are up one model from the pick-ups version (2000? )
I had a school bus as an RV with a manual trany and that transmission was horrible with only 100K miles. So I can imagine what a huge improvement any Allison trany would be.

RE: Diesel Truck-What would you buy?

I sure wouldn't have gone with a 2500. If you didn't want a dually, a SRW 3500 would have been a better choice IMO.
Best choice of brand though!
We ended going with a lighter trailer so a one ton or dually wasnt needed.
Dry weight on the new trailer is only 7800#.

RE: Diesel Truck-What would you buy?

Gappy, you wanted input, you got it. This was far from a joke. Obviously the input given is not the type that matches your opinion. If you owned a 6.0L you'd understand what I meant by towing power. They are impressive. I'm not going to beat this thread to death with you. Enjoy your Chevy and I hope you get many years out of it.
Mike
Mike, I think it was more your comment "you should have bought". To me that means that any other choice is the wrong choice. But really that's OK, if you feel that strong about the 6.0L. I respect that. Seriously, thanks for your input.

RE: Diesel Truck-What would you buy?

You should have bought an 05-07 6.0L Ford. It'll tow circles around the rest and at lowest overall cost. You just have to check the history and be prepared to drop another 2-4k for bullet proofing that engine. With the superior transmissions and best overall interior your still way ahead $$ wise.
Mike
"I should have bought a 6.0L" and "It will tow circles around the rest"
I could say a lot about those 2 quotes but all I will say is, thats the most ridiculous comments on this thread........actually sounds like a joke.

RE: Diesel Truck-What would you buy?

You thought the chev was $10,000.00 more so was it?
chevman
It was but not quote apples for apples, more equipment on the Chev and the Dodge was a '12 and the Chev I bought is a '13. LTZ, Quad cab, 4x4 2500 shortbed, silver, black leather. Pretty well loaded up except moonroof and nav. My intention is to have this truck a very long time so I decided to spend the extra to get exactly what I want so I don't have regrets latter.

RE: Diesel Truck-What would you buy?

Came home today with a new D-max. Analyzed all things, drove all and this where I landed. We actually ended up trading the MH and toad in my sig line for this new truck and new TT.
Pretty darn happy with the deal!

RE: Diesel Truck-What would you buy?

I would hold off on Ford until they they come up with a better High pressure fuel pump. It's an $11,000.00 repair and it sounds like they may not warranty.
I have decided against a Ford and I am generally a "Ford guy", my DD is a F150. I'm just not comfortable with Ford's diesel direction in the the last 9 years.
It is amazing the price difference right now between the Cummins to an equal Duramax....generally $10K difference.

RE: Diesel Truck-What would you buy?

Even though I knew a lot of the replies here would be bias toward your favaorite "team", I wanted to hear what some experienced 5ers like. Thanks for posting!
I haven't committed to anything yet, truck or trailer. Need to sell the DP first (anybody want a super clean diesel pusher at a realistic price?)
I may go a little lighter on the trailer, but want to make sure the whole family has comfortable sleeping arrangements and "the ole man" (me) enjoys the driving experience. Right now I'm leaning either GM or Dodge.
Thanks again for the input, been good reading.

Diesel Truck-What would you buy?

After multiple RV's, this would be our first 5er. If you had a 5th wheel that weight in at 12k# loaded, what nice used truck would you buy?
My spend dollar depends on the truck, I'm willing to spend enough to get enough truck. I need a crew cab because of my kids.
Do I need a dually? I'm guessing the answer is no but would it help much of any thing with 12K#? This would not be my daily driven vehicle and I live in the country.
After lots of reading, I am leaning towards a 2011 duramax based on towing comparisons and the allison, but not sold on anything yet.
I know I want to stay away from fords 6.0L and haven't read much good about their 6.4L that ended in 2010. I dont want a 7.3L PS and frankly, don't want to go that old i had one and felt is was weak compared to a '04 cummins i had several yrs ago. I don't want the small back seat of the dodge crew cab (tall kids like me) but like the look of their mega cab, but haven't been in one yet. I've read that the ford has the most driver comfort for tall folks.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks for your input!

RE: Michelin vs Firestone?

I'm a huge fan of over the top customer service.
I need to think and study a little longer before I make the $$$ commitment.

RE: Michelin vs Firestone?

Everyone else calls Michelin's weird 255/80R22.5 a 265/75. I would not use Michelins (especially XRV's) if you GAVE them to me. I would rather use 10-year-old Chinese tires than new Michelins.
I would look into Hankook, Kelly-Springfield, and Double Coin.
If you are going to throw that out there you should at least explain why.

RE: Michelin vs Firestone?

Gappy,
I would not change to the larger tire. This change would amount to approximately a 4% change in rear gear ratio. On the Dana/Spicer S130 FR in my RV there are 14 gear ratio choices with just under a 5% difference between ratios. My guess is that Itasca/Winnebago did not just pick their gear ratio out of thin air. Some engineering simulations which included various tire diameters most likely occurred prior to the rear gear selection.
Randy
That was my thinking also. I dont believe the manufacturers just randomly buy whatever is cheapest and slap it on, if they did, it wouldn't of been Michelins.

RE: Michelin vs Firestone?

I'm still trying to locate the commandment that says "thou SHALT use 'motorhome' tires on your motorhome". What makes it a "motorhome" tire, anyway?????Because the Michelin and Goodyear tire GODS say it. :b:b:b
Never seen anyone make the statement that only MH tires should be used. Now that said, perhaps there is some crossover in small sizes but in the 22.5, tires are tires are tires I suspect. I know my Hankooks are not "MH tire" but truck tires.
Reckon that statement needs a bit more definition.
I believe it has a lot to did with the load rating. My tires are load rated "G" which I think is maybe one step shy of most semi tractor ratings.

RE: Michelin vs Firestone?

What I've learned from my thread and I kind of figured would hear.....if you poll enough people you won't get a consensis on anything. Basically every tire manufacturer is going to have issues on something.
I appreciate all of the input!

Michelin vs Firestone?

I'm 99% sure I know the answer to this question but will ask any way.
My 255/80 r22.5 Michelins are orginal tires to my rig. 60K miles, lots of tread left, ride fine after a recent rebalance on the front. I have kept a close whatch for changes in the tires and during a recent bath and wax I noticed a slight crack in one of the rear tires. This was not there at the beginning of the summer.
These were manufactured 10 years ago. I have a good friend who is a "tire guy", he looked at them and mostly agrees with me that it is time but not urgent. He quoted new Michelins at $597 each and new Firestones at $407. the firestones are actually a little bigger, 2" taller, 1" wider, 3/32" more in tread depth. The additional height of the tire changes the rounds per mile from 541 to 515 but I dont like the idea of a different size.
I am pretty sure I am going to stick with Michelin regardless. This friend likes to save money and he addmits the Michelin is definately a superior product for a list of reasons.
Your thoughts?

RE: I'm stranded again, need help!

ignition tumbler
the key way/ the tumbelers in the lock where the ignition key goes
the electrical switch itself is on the back behind the key lock
starter
Exactly.....as far as a better description of the mag switch, I am only repeating what the service manager told me (i had never heard of a mag switch. It is NOT the selenoid. This assembly is the size of a baseball or smaller but not round and mounts somewhere inside where my battery' trays. When I get home I'll crawl under to see where it is mounted. It did look like it had a small mounting plate. Service manager said these are common on Ford trucks.
No I do not keep a wad of heavy keys on my key chain of any vehicle for the reason described above. Although I cannot speaker for the PO.
If you have never been to "the pool" at Glenwood Springs CO......get there sometime, it is a great place relax!
