RE: 1997 Roadtrek 190V - Propane Tank

I don't know but I just read a handy hint in the General RVing/Gizmos and Handy Hints thread where someone used a different propane water heater in lieu of a new RV water heater. The post was made on May 15 by 82 Jayman. Might be worth looking into.

RE: "Corps of Engineers" Camgrounds? What's that?

You can search on www.recreation.gov and reserve by campsite and look at a map, too.

RE: What RV damage has Gorilla Duct Tape repaired?

The drivers side power window motor broke on a trip to Colorado. Window then would not stay up. We had to tape and re-tape with duct tape as we drove to our destination. Kept falling. Found Gorilla duct tape on way home. Taped it back up once and it held till we arrived at home. Now we don't leave home without it!

Great Good Sam Roadside Assistance

Had a meeting at Church this morning and after went to start up the van and it would not start. We had some engine stalling last weekend and I knew it needed to go into the shop. Good Sam answered immediately, arranged for the proper tow truck, they arrived within an hour and towed me and the van slowly to the shop. First time we have needed a tow for the van. Used the Roadside Assistance for lock-outs before and a flat tire on the boat trailer. No problems to report.

RE: Mileage/Gas Tank Info for Class B to Live In

Our Dodge Xplorer has a 30 gallon tank. We get anywhere from 10 to 15 miles per gallon, depending on whether we are pulling our boat (10 mpg) to driving on relatively flat roads without the A/C on.

RE: Using the RV toilet on the road

You wrote: "So you are saying once we disconnect from the water source, water will remain in the tank?" No, the water will have to be filled at your fresh water tank inlet, IF you have one. Then, also if you have one, you will need to turn on a water pump to get water to come out of the faucets and fill the toliet. We have to fill our fresh water tank at the side of our RV.

RE: San Antonio, TX to Yellowstone/Mount Rushmore

Wasn't sure what you will be camping in. Looked up your previous posts and looks like you will be renting something? If you are renting a pop-up trailer I would suggest that you travel in the mini-van and stay in inexpensive motels on your way to Yellowstone/Mount Rushmore. Then camp at your destinations. You would then have the van to drive around in. You might consider driving across Texas to Lubbock and Amarillo and then heading up Highway 287 to Wyoming and then across to Yellowstone. Or you could drive up to Dallas on IH-35 or Highway 281 and then get on Highway 287. Please let us know what you will be camping in and what you will be driving. If you are renting a Class C you could just stay overnight in it. The Class C would be expensive for you but fun for the children. Either way, on the trips to and from your destinations it will be fun for the chidlren to stay at a motel or campground with a swimming poool so they can splash and move around.

RE: Co. Rt.69 Walsenbrg-Texas Creek?

Good road. You should not have any problems. Westcliffe is a nice town to stop in and have lunch and do a little shopping.

RE: Musings in the middle of the night

When our little couples fishing club gathers at fishing cabins and motels for two-day tournaments, we always ask if we may have a late check-out (our tournaments are usually from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm). Mangers allow late check-outs 99% of the time. If you enjoy leaving later I would just ask when you check in. I am thinking that you will be allowed and you will not be breaking the rules.

RE: Kindle question

I have a Kindle and like it BUT my husband also gave me an iPad for Christmas a couple of years ago and that is what I read my books on now. Occasionally I will want to take a break and play a simple word game and the app is right there. I like to read Historical fiction and when a place is mentioned that I am not familiar with I just look at the map on my iPad. When we travel I do use both. My husband reads his books on his iPhone and I don't understand how he can do that! Last summer we both used the Kindle and iPad to read our books on. The iPad is a bit heavier than the Kindle but it is back-lit so I can read at night. I purchased a pillow that I use to hold it so it doesn't feel so heavy in my hands.

RE: Ten worst traffic cities

I KNEW that Austin would be on that list! There are, however, ways to get around the Austin traffic!

RE: Where to boondock near Chicago O'Hare

Maybe you could check with motels and ask if they will let you park in their lot for a small fee. Or check with a Church and see if they might allow you to park in their lot.

RE: Summer trip finalized

Sounds like a great trip. You are boon-docking in the Medicine Bow Mountains? I would love to know where. Can't wait to see your photos.

RE: Paper Maps??

I like that spiral bound Rand McNally Atlas. I have the Wal-Mart Atlas but it is from 2010 (how time does fly1) so I think I may have to purchase that Rand McNally. With the spiral bound it is easier to leave open and read. IMO

RE: Bears and RV

We were camped at Lake Irwin near Crested Butte, Colorado, a few years ago. A bear walked through the campground at twilight. The bear broke into the top side window on a TC camper and grabbed some cookies. Same night we felt our van shake. Bear tried to get in on the driver's side where I had some food stored. In the morning we went out to the picnic table and our vinyl blue and white checkered tablecloth had huge scratches on it from you-know-who's claws! We had wiped that tablecloth after eating supper but he or she must have smelled food on it. Now I don't leave any food near any windows...just to be safe.

RE: What do you do in a tornado warning when in the RV?

We were camping a few years ago and storm warnings came up and we went to the shower house. The campground was full and we were the only people who left to go there. Also, it took us a while to find out exactly what county we were in so now I always pay attention to that because the warnings (here in Texas anyway) always seen to be by county...

RE: Texas to Yellowstone - Two Questions

Chris....your itinerary is great! We do almost the same thing on our first night...drive about 4-5 hours from the Austin area and overnight. I don't usually sleep well if we leave early in the morning (thinking about everything I forgot to pack or need to do in the morning) so leaving after my husband escapes from work early is a great solution. The last two trips we stayed overnight at Abilene State Park. Very shaded and quiet. There are about four sites with full hook-ups and they also have a dump station if you just want an electric & water site.

RE: FEMALE Solo Musician - ??? on Class B Van for FULL TIME?

Hi there! I just read through the entire thread and could not find the year of the Xplorer you are interested in. We have a 2000 230 wide-body Xplorer with 87,000 miles on it. We purchased it is 2002 when it had only 18,000 miles on it and was hardly used. Our mechanic says that the engine is great and should run for a few more year. I use the van almost daily to go to work and to run errands. We have camped when it is cold out and the furnace warms us nicely. The Xplorer's fresh water tank is insulated but I think that if you were to camp in under 20 degrees some things may freeze up. There are just the two of us and we are both pretty tall and we travel with our 12 pound dog. Personally, I believe that I could live in my van if it was just myself. Sure, it's tight but we spend a lot of time outdoors. Our Xplorer has a solar panel and a generator so we have added energy sources. We are getting ready to replace all six tires again as they are six years old now. We also need to replace the refrigerator as it "died" on us last October (have been using coolers since). We previously owned a 24 foot Class C with a cab over queen size bed and a sofa bed sleeper plus a double bed in the back. I drove it easily but never in snow or sleet. Please forgive me if I missed the year of your Xplorer and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

RE: Laredo, TX Bypass

Yes, we took the new cutoff last year when we drove back to Central Texas from our stay in Zapata. Traveling north on 83 you will turn east at Mangana-Hein road. Go about a mile and then on your left will be Highway 20 called "Cuatro Venitas" We took it to Highway 39 and then followed th Bob Bullock loop back to IH-35. Saved us a lot of trouble as the traffic in Laredo is stop and go. (Hope this helps. We traveled this way in late December 2011 and I am not sure if you can now take it all the way through)
