RE: Flightseeing

We've done a Denali flight with K-2, a glacier landing with Coastal helicopters, and Misty Fjords with Island Wings. Each was a fantastic memory, but I think Misty Fjords was definitely my favorite!

RE: Looking for nice CG in Fairbanks next summer

We were happy with our stay at the Rivers Edge CG in Fairbanks on the Chena River.

RE: GREAT ALASKAN HOLIDAY SPRING ADVENTURE 2013 IOWA/ALASKA

Hi Cheryl! No - we're skipping this year. Hope you enjoy the TOW as much as we did last year - we went across the first day the border control was on duty, and had one snow detour on the route but loved it! We also saw Prudhoe Bay on that trip - but only the airport on our way to Barrow. Glad your sister is able to go back with you again this year. Tell her I said Hi! And I sure do know what you mean about Sue's pictures!! Between she and Murray, I've fallen in love as much with the Yukon as AK!

RE: Visit Yukon and join our happiness!

Thanks for the smiles Sue!! Yes, I can understand why Yukoners are the happiest, but I'll stick with my warmer winter temperatures, and just enjoy visiting in the summer! :)

RE: GREAT ALASKAN HOLIDAY SPRING ADVENTURE 2013 IOWA/ALASKA

It's great to see ya'll as excited about your trip as we were this time last year! Unless they change things, we've always gotten the Milepost from the previous year. (I suppose they get a bargain that way!) So for our 2010 trip we had a 2009 milepost, and in 2012 we had a 2011 milepost. I tore out all the sections that I knew we wouldn't use in order to save luggage space.

RE: Cassiar

Papa Peter - taking that rig over the top of the world had to be QUITE an adventure!! I'm afraid I would have had to get out and walk! LOL!

RE: Cassiar

I remember only a couple short gravel patches when travelling it this past May.

RE: Forest fire season heats up again in the north

6.5 million acres in the western U.S. have burned - sorry to hear B.C. is getting it too!!

RE: Books for Alaska?

My top 3 would be: Milepost, Frommer's Alaska, and Church's Alaskan Camping. All 3 have come in very useful on our trips.

RE: Sure this has been asked before But....here goes

Burwoods, I thought "Pulling off somewhere" was much easier in AK than it was going through Canada. Tell us your route, and may be we can be of more help in places you may enjoy staying. As Joe said, most places with utilities are going to be the "Parking lot" types, which I too hate!

RE: Renting RV in Alaska: Pros/Cons

Although flying definitely is a GREAT way to see some spectacular sights, going to AK without an RV to me would be missing half of the adventure!!! If you're renting, please make sure you know the reputation of the company you're renting from! Clippership gets some horrid reviews! We've rented from Great Alaskan Holidays 3 times and had fantastic trips. (My second choice would be ABC if I couldn't go with GAH) If you go to their website you can find out which highways are forbidden, and which are just "restricted". We did the Denali Highway this year and LOVED IT!. (We also did the Top of the World - but they only allow that if you're delivering an RV from Iowa on their Spring Adventure) If anyone is interested, a trip report on our Spring Adventure this year is at www.mytripjournal/cjnky (Sorry, but I can't come up with any "cons" on renting an RV in AK!)

RE: Your favorite must see tour...

RE: Windshield cracks on Alaska trip

We cracked a windshield on the Richardson Highway on our first trip, and on the Parks Highway on our second trip. Going slower would not have helped since both were thrown at us by oncoming traffic. This year we got the windshield insurance and traveled the gravelled Denali Highway as well as the Top of the World Highway - NO windshield damage!

RE: Jasper NP Campsites

Sure wish they could send some of that excess water down here!

RE: Seward Campground

is the Sea Life Center different? Not really - it's just the part of the city campground that's the closest to the Sea Life Center. We were well entertained by the otters when we stayed in that part!

RE: UPDATE: Alaska Hwy RE-OPENED Monday June 11 evening

Sue, is this an unusual circumstance, or does it happen often?

RE: UPDATE: Alaska Hwy RE-OPENED Monday June 11 evening

Wow! I'm sure thinking about all those stuck in the boonies until the road reopens. Thanks Sue for keeping us informed!
