RE: Rest Areas Safe?

Don't put too much faith in the "24 hour Security". I live 4 miles from a major rest area on I95 that has security provided by the Florida Highway Patrol. Not long ago a young couple was discovered dead by a passing motorist in their car parked a couple of slots down from the trooper. They has been dead a couple of days, turned out to be from carbon monoxide poisoning, but "Smokie" never noticed, ever though the car was there for those days. Now, I'm sure that if there was a gun battle going on, he would have noticed, or someone running by screaming for help, but like others, I trust in my own protective measures.

RE: Towing a toad to Alaska

We towed a Vue to Alaska in 2008. I didn't put any kind of shield on it on the trip up. When we got to Fairbanks, the engine compartment and the cowling vents had a lot of small pieces of gravel in them. On the return trip, we had ordered a coastline and had it delivered to the shop in Fairbanks that was replacing our DP engine. We used it on the remainder of that trip and a couple of others and sold it with the car. It worked well, but any dirt between the cover and the car would scratch the paint. Kind of a tradeoff. This year, I am not planning to use anything on the replacement Vue. I bought it used, with a rebuilt (salvage) title solely to use as a toad. If it gets dinged up a little, I can always have it painted.

RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

If you plan to spend a lot of time in Canada, and use a lot of phone service, consider buying a prepaid burner (tracphone) for use there. We are going to use WIFI where available and facetime with our kids. Last time, we just bought a prepaid calling card and called them from payphones. Not enough cell service to make a cellphone purchase worthwhile.

RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

Chest waders, with rubber soles for the boots. No felt soles are permitted lots of places. I had good luck with silver salmon in the Mat-Su river using a fly that looked like a leach eating a salmon egg. It was fished with a slit-shot singer on the tippet about 8-10 inches above the fly. In the ocean, we used wiggle warts trollled on a downrigger.

RE: Fishing Alaska transpot back to lower 48

When I went to Kodiak in 2000, with 9 friends, we brought back 1400 lbs of frozen fillets, a mix of salmon and halibut. 2 boxes each of 70 lbs. that was back when the airlines let you check 3 bags per person. In 2008, mDW and I shipped a couple of hundred pounds of fish back from Valdez, two days limit each of salmon and one day limit of halibut and assorted bottom fish. Expensive, but worth it. This year, I plan to take one of my big "Yeti" coolers off my boat, and hopefully fill my freezer and that cooler for the trip home. I doubt you will have any problem with customs if the fish are processed.

RE: Changed Fuel Filter and Now Won't Start

I have had to bleed the injectors on several diesels before. Brett is correct in pressurizing the tank with the bleed screw open or the filter a little loose until fuel runs out, but if it still doesn't fire, loosen at least 2 injectors , crank it over, and when it fires, tighten the injectors back down. That has never failed me.

RE: Salmon exchange

It is expense to fish and ship your catch, but if you love fish, like we do, it's worth it. I like to smoke my own salmon and make dip for parties (and just enjoying) but the filets are hard to roll in the papers and even harder to keep lit :)

RE: Dinghy or No Dinghy

We used our toad a lot in 2008, both for side trips and fishng excursions. It also came in really handy when we blew the engine on the motorhome. It's like that famous credit card, I don't leave home without it.

RE: Replacing leaking rubber roof with PVC roof

I just repaired the roof on my TT that I use for a hunt camp using 5 gallons of EPDM liquid rubber. I cleaned the old roof, epoxied some of the rotting plywood, then rolled the new EPDM on according to instructions. It worked well and coast about $350.00. BUT, I would not do it again. I realized that Icould have torn all the old rubber roof off and Fibeglased the entire roof for about the same money and had a better roof. I have no experience with PVC, but I'll bet you could have your coach glassed for less than $4000.00

RE: Salmon exchange

I remeber when I was a teenager, my dad and I went salmon fishing out of the Columbia River. We took the fish to a small cannery in Oregon and they canned it for us and shipped it to our home later. We had several cases of fish and ate slamon for a couple of years afterward. In 2008, we had our fish vaccuum sealed, frozen and stored in Valdez, then shipped home to us after we returned. It was rather expensive, but we had about 40 silvers and 2 halibut along with some other bottom fish. I think this year we will buy a small freezer, put it in the toad and plug it in every night on the way home. We always did the reverse when we fished Marlin tournaments in the Bahamas. we would buy the cheapest small freezer we could find, load it with steaks, shrimp, etc, put it in the cockpit and run to the Bahamas. When we got there, we put it on the dock and ate well. When we left, we gave it to the dock boys that took care of and washed the boat as their pay and tip.

RE: Direct tv reciver locked 771

And you should never have to pay anyone to come out and fix your satellite system. I have had the DirecTV guys out to repair stuff lots of times and they don't charge. There is also a little red "reset" button under the little door on the bottom right front of the box that will resart the box. Like others said, if that doesn't work just call DirecTV. I have there number saved on the cellphone.

RE: Macerator or not?

Mine is convenient when I get home and clean the tanks, since I have to pump about 50 feet to my septic system, but you're right, it takes a long time to dump and when they get clogged, it's a real mess to fix.

RE: What did you do to your Class A MH today???

Checked the electrolite (water) in the batteries, found the positive cable end had deteriorated,(came off in my hand!) replaced it and the jumper cable between that bank of 6 volt positives.

For those of you who have made the drive, is going up 89 to Canada 2 doable in a 42' DP?

RE: Help with Kwikee power steps

If the steps operate when you "hotwire" the motor, and your door switches are making and breaking contact the way they should, and you have a good ground to the controller (brain), then you probably need a new controller. This is not an uncommon problem. I had to replace mine last years. It's an easy DIY. Check every contact and wire with a multimeter and if everything checks out, just replace it.

RE: Bio diesel.....yes or no

The problem with Biodiesel is that it dissolves any gunk that has accumulated in the tank and lines and that is what clogs the filters. The other problem is that the "Bio" part might cause some older fuel lines to dissolve, just like ethanol does. As long as it doesn't sit in the tank, you should be fine. If I have to fill with anything over 5%, I will make sure to run that tank out before putting it away for any period of time. I've had to have several outboard motors rebuilt because of ethanol gasoline, and numerous primr bulbs and fuel lines replaced on small engines. I now have a 110 gallon tank at my house for non-ethanol gas.

RE: HOW MUCH CAN IT TAKE?

We drove from Florida to Wyoming a couple of years ago with three drivers, stopping only for fuel. Did the same on the way home. Coach didn't seem to need a rest.

RE: HELP! MAYDAY! S.O.S. EMERGENCY!

If you have carefree slide toppers, the ends are held on by several hex head (allen) bolts. One end, usually the Right as you look at the coach, has a hole in the shaft where you can pin the roller to keep the spring from turning. The other end is the one where you remove the center allen bolt to remove the roller and topper awning. I just replaced all four of my topper awnings and had to disassemle each topper assembly to do so. Upon replacement, on one of my toppers, those bolts were too tight and bound the roller causing the topper to hang up. By loosening the surrounding bolts on that end a little, I was able to free the roller to turn easily. If you have to remove the bent roller, open the slide about 10-12 inches, put a 3" cotter pin thru the holes in the roller and shaft, (or use a 3" 10-22 bolt with a nut and washer), take out the center allen bolt on the other end ot the roller shaft and you can remove it in one piece. The awning will then slide out of the track on the side of the coach. Carefree has detailed instructions on their website.

RE: Class A or classC

We took the 42' DP last time and are taking it back in June. The only place I won't try to take it is up the haul road. I didn't get up there last trip but this time will either take a tour or drive the toad. Figure out how much creature comfort you require for however long you will be gone. In my case, DW expects lots of room, a large bathroom and comfortable bed, so we take the Beaver. Three months on the road is a long time with an unhappy wife. :)
