You can use moth balls for a substitute if its active ingredient is naphthalene …. Mothballs depending on maker or origin may use champor or para-dichlorobenzene and these ingredients either haven’t been testes or tested as less affective than the naphthalene for snakes… plus the para-dichlorobenzene is a known carcinogen …
RE: Emergency Roadside Service
Based on your post you placed your call on the most traveled day of the year, and even though you had the failure at 4:30, your call to GS was a second choice was well after 8 when most garages and tire shops have closed for the holiday (the most difficult time to find any service) … and even though your call was most likely under abnormally high call times, you found the 15 min hold time, and the 2 hour response time, objectionable or some how deficient (the hold time is more than should be expected and should be reported)…
If your question is would another service been better under the same conditions… I would say probably not… but I would say one call to any service isn’t a good indicator of their overall performance…
Your post did seem to indicate GS owed you something more/better due to you total time spent along the roadside, intended or not, would be a ludicrous position to take…
RE: RV break in
While the work order may have a hold harmless clause in most states it is not enforceable as written and the level of dealer negligence in these types of things is different from state to state… in even smaller print there may be language that also states you may have other specific rights and remedies… the same holds true for storage places… in one case a fence may be due diligence, and in another with unlit and hidden from view sites a fence may not meet the requirements… a dealer can leave their own inventory just parked on their lot, but in many cases their obligation to protect a customer owned unit requires a higher level of care… often because of lack of space they gamble a little…
As others have said, unless you know otherwise it would be better to let the insurance figure it out, but I would not pick up the unit and bring it home until it is carefully inspected and the repairs are satisfactory… the down side to this is there is no incentive for your insurance co to settle for more than the loss minus the deductible and anticipated cost of full recovery effort…
Hopefully the damage not bad enough and the dealer just accepts the responsibility…
RE: Snakes
Snake-a-way’s active ingredient is Naphthalene with crystals being the carrier and the vapors being the repellent…it works well with most types of land snakes… I don’t know how long a treatment last, and it is the only recognized snake repellent made, but that doesn’t mean other things wouldn’t work…
EDIT:There may have been a good reason the moth balls smelled like snake-a-way...
What is the active ingredient in mothballs?
Mothballs were originally made from camphor, or naphthalene …
but para-dichlorobenzene became cheaply available as an unwanted by-product of ortho-dichlorobenzene
production, and thus became the most common active ingredient...
However para-dichlorobenzene is also a suspected carcinogen, and naphthalene
has again become a common active ingredient. Consequently, the best
method of finding the active ingredient is to read the label on the packet…
RE: RV Industry No Longer Running On Empty
The only thing the is going to turn things around is to turn the trade deficit around… until then disposable income will continue to decline…
we either have to sell more of our goods or buy less from China or a growing number of people will be forced out of the RV market…
loosening credit would only be a band-aid at this point… if we don’t start making things to sell and keep buying foreign there will be no long term recovery for the RV industry or others…
RE: TPO Roof on Jayco Jayfeather Line JAYCO REPLY " New Post"
TPO has gone through several reformulations and each time they claim to have resolved all of their problems… I am sure if there is another reformulation they will make the same claim… TPO still uses a backing…
EPDM’s problem is its natural process of chalking…
Sealing a roof is critical regardless of roofing material used… maintaining the seal is a owner responsibility, but the source of the leak isn’t always easy to spot, and most are only found after intrusion to the inside of the trailer… there is always a potential for new leaks even after a inspection…
RE: Buying a site in an RV Resort.
I send my summers on a RV lot I own in a camping resort… it is my home base, I spend about 5 months here and I love staying here… I send about 5 months bouncing around Florida in the winter months, and 2 months somewhere in between… when outside my home base I might be in a public park, on private or public lands, in a rest area, truck stop, parking lot, or resort…
As I get older I find myself enjoying private CG’s more and more… most of them are much quieter and have rules that are enforced when needed, and the campers get along better… private and public lands are nice with no people or rules and a good change… SP’s are becoming my least favorite places to stay… in SP today every camper seems to obey only the rules they like and ignore the rest, spend half their time complaining about everything and everyone else that are also obeying only the rules that they like…
While I have enjoyed the best of all of them full timing for more than 14 years now and camping for more than 40 years, if I had to pick only one it would be my home base lot…
The absolute worse places though are the adult only parks, where everyone either has their nose so high they can’t see where they are going , or have their head up their butt and can’t see the forest for the trees and everybody’s business is everybody’s business…
I love nothing more than seeing people having fun and hearing children laughing, I even like to hear a occasional dog barking… I like parks where quiet time doesn’t start until 11 or 12, and don’t mind if some neighbors sit around the fire talking until 2 or 3... Nor would I mind if someone cut through my site but I haven’t had that happen in more years than I can remember …
Lot ownership isn’t for everyone that’s for sure, but neither are SP’s, boon docking, or parking lots…
I find campers needs and wants are as fluid as the oceans waters… as long as we have wheels and a few gallons of gas, those needs and wants can be meet…
RE: Dual Propane Tank Question
Is the LP really leaking out or do you just can smell it??? The smell is strong and when standing right there the odor will come out of the disconnected hose…
RE: road side service problems
I would like to know the basis for the op not receiving service twice… there has to be more to the story there… we haven’t heard the whole story here…
RE: length of average loan
yea i agree 5-6 is better i can aford 1000-1500 a month right now im putting 20k down so i wanted to set a say 10 year loan for 500 to 600 a month cause you never know whats gonna happen and just pay it off in half the time
$20,000 down, finance for 10 years at $500/600 per month, for a TT…
It better be one heck of a special trailer… Am I reading something wrong???
Based on this I would just save for another 9 to 12 months and own it and not worry about payments for ten or more years years…
20 down plus 60,000/72,000 pay back over the ten years, for a TT!!!:S
RE: Has any one noticed lately...
Haven’t had any pop-ups yet, just the long blank pages because of the added right Column…
Whatever they need to do to survive the bad economy, they should do…
Advertising is their core business, magazines and websites facilitate that…
RE: Travel Trailer Tire opionions needed
If your rims are aluminum the rims PSI rating should be stamped into the backside of the rim…
If you have steel rims, when you remove the tire there should be a sticker in the valley of the rim with the rims PSI… it may or may not be the full 80 PSI of the LR E tire… based on post I have read here all rims may not have a sticker, but that has not been my experience…
the LR E tire is a better quality tire even at 65 PSI as long as 65PSI is enough pressure for the load…
Anything from 66 to the 80 PSI with the LR E is incrementally better in my opinion…
Still the biggest cause of tire failure is neglect, compounded by the poor quality of the tires imported from China…
the best way to achieve long life of any trailer tire is to maintain air pressure all year not just when going on trips, covering them while parked, and using them frequently…
RE: RV Industry No Longer Running On Empty
Good news maybe but that is subjective… it seems the whole industry is still in the toilet, but maybe the plunger has been put down for a while…
There is still a lot of trouble, defaults are still climbing, foreclosure keep coming, the cash buyers that have been holding out will spike and taper off, and disposable income will continue to shrink for many… its going to be a long winter for the industry…
RE: replacement dinette seat cushions
Sorry about the second link, I don’t know where I got that from and obviously filed it wrong…
If you do it your self, you should wrap the foam with batting to round and soften the edges some… I guess its important because the pros do it that way…
The bags I have seen used were real light weight, like trash bags, so any wrinkles in the plastic can’t be seen in the cover… while I have seen it done, I can’t say it is the best way to do it, but it seemed like a good idea to me, especially because the guy had three small kids…
RE: Miley Cyrus Bus Crash (she was not on it)
Dutch
So what is a rental MH… is that not a RV, or is it a commercial vehicle… there are people that post here that have rented rather than own… they rented a MH… many use their RV’s for business…
But hey, call it a milk truck if you want, I don’t see the difference, they are diesel pushers fully self contained, built and used for travel, sleeping and eating… boy that sounds familiar to me…
I see not problem with where it is posted, which seems to be your beef… no thread is required reading, and the subject line made no mistake about what you were going to find in the thread… there are many threads that I don’t read if I think they are not of interest to me, and many I read and not post to if I am disinterested… I guess we just disagree on what a MH is, and neither of us seen enough of the vehicle to know for sure...
RE: hot water heater question
I may be incorrect but wouldn't an alternate check to determine of water heater is in bypass or not be to carefully open the safety pressure release valve on water heater. I would think if water heater is bypassed, no water would come out. I may be wrong - I'm still learning from all of these seasoned RVers that post here.
You are correct, but maybe a bypass isn’t completely open or closed or the check valve on the heaters outlet can be sticking… that might allow the tank to fill but may cause her problem…
But by checking the relief valve she would know if the tank was full and if the water in the tank is hot…
RE: hot water heater question
Lucy
In your new trailer there should be a big packet of material… there should be a booklet in there that covers your water heater… it should explain how everything works and have some pictures…
The bypass in inside the trailer and they need to be set right so there is always water in the heater before turning it on… it can be damaged is it is turned on with no or little water in it… but the by-pass valve(s) set wrong are most likely the problem… there are different types of by-pass valves (one, two, and three valve)…
The little bit of warm water may no mean anything or it could be a symptom of the problem, I just don’t know, but it can happen on most if no water is drawn from either hot or cold for a long time…
Good luck…
RE: replacement dinette seat cushions
Foam can be really expensive, but it cuts easily with a electric knife and is easy to do if you take your time…
To make it easier to get into the cover, you can put it in a light weight plastic bag and vaccume some of the air out of it… I know people that have left the bag on so if something spills it only wets the cover for easy clean-up…
Larry, if you plan on keeping your rig for a while I think you will be glad you got the extra firm, but I don‘t know if it will ever get soft…
