RE: 5th wheel hitch
With a new Heartland (Elkridge) trailer you do not need a sliding hitch unless you have a lot of tight places to back into. Most of the people on the Heartland club site have ditched their slider.
First thing you need to ask yourself is; do you plan to remove the hitch and use the truck other than a tow vehicle? The B&W system is very good and leaves the bed clean for other uses but you pay for that convenience. I have a Curt 20K and have been very happy with. I added a Bedsaver soon after for extra insurance.

Haven't used the Ohio rest stops but we travel by the clock and not the mileage. We hit the road no later than 10 AM (usually 9:15) and start looking for a place to park around 2 PM and pull over for the night no later than 4 PM.
We use to get up early and drive till almost dark but the next day was not fun. We really like our new arrangements but everyone is different so try it and see what you think.

To the OP, if you think Cardinal has one installed and you don't have the remote you'll first need to verify if this true. You'll need to find the control box for the remote which is located behind a panel or cabinet near most of the systems wiring.
Most trailers that have the remote system are built by Lippert (LCI) so that's one thing to look for. If you can't find the control box then I'll bet your trailer doesn't have it.

I'm sorry that you had this much trouble with a travel trailer purchase but most if not all of the problems could have been avoided by slowing down the purchase process and thoroughly inspect the trailer prior to signing the paperwork. Won't happen a second time.

Getting new fifth wheel, just wish we could hire someone to do the PDI.
I am no profesional but I am fairly knowledgable and live close to you. If you have any questions on how a system operates I would happily try and help you out.
Thank you, my concern is not so much how to operate systems as that everything is as it should be for a new RV. We had a bad experience with our last RV. 22 days old had a problem and the dealer never fixed it to our satisfaction, continued to have problems until we fixed it ourselves.
You truly are not an RVer if you are not fixing things. Your PDI is the most important thing you and your dealer can do together. A though PDI and few items found tells me the dealer has truly prepped the RV for delivery. If the dealer misses a couple of little things (nicks, screws loose, dust/dirt) make note and move on but when you find bigger issues then they didn't take the time to prep it. The dealer gets paid by the factory for each unit prepped for delivery. How they spend that money says volumes about the dealer.

First ask yourself roughly how long are you going to stay at each place you visit? If it's only for a few days then maybe a motorhome would fit your needs, but if you intend to stay put for longer periods of time and venture out from the RV I say 5th wheel.
Next go to a RV show, sit in a motorhome for an hour and then do the same in a 5th wheel. Talk and listen to people as they walk through, you'll learn more from them in two hours than you would think. Don't get involved with a dealer until you have selected the right rig for YOU. Then find that rig at a price that fits your budget.
One last thing, look up the discussions on this site for motorhome vs 5th wheel. Good reading and you'll find out that only you can make the right choice. My mother-in-law is doing the same thing as you and we are waking her through the process. She is currently choosing floorplans for 5th wheels. At 73 she is not scared a bit, she used our rig as a trainer last week and had a lot of fun.

What bone yards are you looking at. Went to John's Auto Parts in Blaine, MN and they had 10 in stock $25 each. Mine was like new, very clean. I added a extension and socket handle to seed things up.
I'd keep looking.

Load everything up and head to a CAT scale. You are only guessing about your weights until you do that. Once that is done then come back here and post the results.
Regarding damaging your vehicle towing is dependent on the weight you are towing. I know that your auto leveling will fail sooner because of added weight of the trailer. It really wasn't designed for leveling while towing a trailer.

Why not fill it with city water from home? Clean fresh water that doesn't run the risk of contamination because it is being transferred from a container.

Well, the chance of rain shouldn't sop you from doing a through PDI but it may affect some of the items on your checklist. For example testing roof vents, Fantastic Fans, looking for water leaks under the trailer. Now that is assuming the PDI is being done outdoors. Mine was done inside the dealership.
Make sure everything is hooked up and powered on and off. Every switch, valve, drain, hose, drawer is checked. Once you sign and leave then the dealership has no incentive to make timely repairs. Be prepared not to sign and to drive home without your new 5th wheel if you find too many things wrong.
Our PDI took the whole time the dealership was open on Saturday 8 to 12 to complete but because they did their own through PDI there was nothing wrong when we took delivery. Hasn't been back to the dealer since purchased!

I installed the Hatchlit.com kits on three of my cargo doors and are very happy with a year of service so far. Easy to install and everything you need is in the kit.
The reinforcement plates they provide overcome the thin foam design of most cargo doors.

A through and complete 4 hour Pre Delivery Inspection PDI. If you are unsure what a PDI is do a search here and read it, print it out and bring it with your.
I brought tools, flashlights, outlet testers, voltmeter, microwave safe cup (to boil water in) large note pad, matches (to test smoke detectors, tire pressure gauge and most importantly another person.

The Tailgater only works with the VIP 211K receiver. The hopper and joey will only work with the higher end dishes.

Gale hit the nail on the head. Your dollar is not worth anywhere near as much as it use to. So everything costs more. The Gov says there is no inflation but they have to take food and energy out to make the numbers look good.
I wouldn't worry about the cost of these RVs, before summer is over they will be begging for buyers when the stock market "adjusts" and other economic factors hit.
