RE: Getting into a 5th wheel

Lot's of issues to consider. What climate will you be living in. Living in an RV at below freezing temps is problematic. Will there be an affordable campground available. A really big issue is depreciation of any RV. If you plan to keep it indefinitely and eventually use it for recreation, that's one thing but if you just want it for housing, then sell in a few years, the depreciation will cost you big time. We did buy a stationary trailer and live in it when I did grad school and that worked out very well.

RE: Am I stressing my tow veh, or worring for nothing?

Pulling that weight should be a breeze with that truck. For comparison, we tow a small 5th wheel (unloaded wt 5,300 lbs) with essentially same truck (a 2007) and it does fine. Either the wind was very very strong, you were pulling a steep grade and aren't familiar with how that feels, or your truck is losing power due to a mechanical problem. That truck should be rated to tow well over 7,000 lbs. Oh yes- never exceed about 60 MPH.

RE: F150 Ecoboost for Dummies

No doubt the eco-boost (a V-6 with twin turbos) is a great motor; however, If I could get the traditional V-8 for much less money I might consider it. The V-8 would have less mechanical complexity, still have a lot of power and I'm just not that impressed with the MPG difference. My Chevy V-8 gets 10 towing, can beat 20 on the interstate and averages about 15.

RE: Electric use for appliances

As stated each appliance has energy use noted on it. From experience with our 30 amp 5th wheel, I know that we cannot run many high use appliances(toaster, heater, microwave, griddle) at the same time; actually maybe only 1 at a time. Lights, TV, radio do not use much.

Cruise America Used Class C ?

I note that one can buy a used rental unit from Cruise America for reasonable prices. Fairly late model but, of course lots of miles. Has anyone out there purchased one and what has your experience been? Especially the largest model. It appears that none have a slide out. I'm guessing they are cleaned up pretty well and in "good shape" but not sure how it would be to have so many miles on that drive-train and chassis?

RE: Running diesel overnight to stay warm

Most public campgrounds would not allow as generator hours usually end at 8 PM and I wouldn't want to be your neighbor. Use the furnace.

RE: Too many people?

A neighbor at a campground once told us- I don't care how big a Class A is, it's really only for 2 people.

RE: What do you do in a tornado warning when in the RV?

1 night several years ago we spent a lot of time in the campground cement block bathroom with 2 grandkids. No tornado hit us. There isn't a heck of a lot to do but pray. Probably going to the sturdiest campground building(usually a bathroom) would be 1st choice but have to admit we aren't going to stay awake all night ready to run to the BR. Getting into the truck would be my 2nd choice. Probably staying in the trailer is not good, especially if large trees. Perhaps a motorhome would be slightly safer?

Used Motorhome-where are they?

We are looking to go from a small 5th wheel/half-ton truck to a used motorhome and tow our newly purchased 2012 Chevy Sonic. We've been looking for 6 months or more. I thought used motorhomes were everywhere. Not. Maybe our criteria are too specific--length-28-29 ft. Class A or C. I know we need length for a walk-around permanent bed. Driveway too short for any longer. Will need under $25,000; yet, clean, well cared for and with either Ford V-10 or the big GM V-8, workhorse. By the way, how do you cope with the shorter ones with a bed up against the wall? Wife doesn't see a way. And the bed over the cab is not an option. Prefer Jayco or Winnebago.

RE: Silverado 1500 Towing

Pretty sure your owner's manual will tell you but you can also look it up through Trailer Life Mag as they put out a towing guide every year. It is tricky to make sure you find the right listing for your truck but it's there. My 2007 Chevy 4-w drive with 5.3 motor and 3.73 rearend is rated for about 7,700 I think and I comfortably tow a small 5th wheel with dry wt. of 5,300 lbs.

RE: fuel economy

No I haven't; however, it takes energy to move weight and any added weight will increase the energy(fuel) used to move it; other factors(such as wind, driving style, etc)being equal. Theoretically, even adding a penny would increase fuel used but of course you wouldn't notice. Water weighs 8 lbs per gallon. That's quite a bit so half a tank (maybe 20 gal) could add 150 or so pounds. You still might not notice because the way we calculate MPG might not be accurate or sensitive enough to show but add weight and MPG will go down; guaranteed. Back in the 50's , drag racers learned that shaving a few pounds would decrease their quarter mile times by tenths of a second.

RE: As I sit here and read threads about

I could count on 1 hand the times we have had those problems mentioned, over a period of 30+ yrs of RVing. But maybe it's because we usually stay in state, national, public campgrounds and often in winter when it's mostly senior snowbirds. I guess I would say dogs(and their owners) have been more a problem than people but not that bad at all.

RE: Too old to continue traveling ? Grown children urging ..

We are about 70 and are sometimes on the road in our 5th wheel for 10 weeks or so and our adult kids have not questioned it at all yet. We are healthy and physically ative. This is not something your kids should decide at all as long as you don't get dumb about it and try to continue when you aren't really physically able to do it safely, especially the driving part. We all know the day will come when we should quit and stay home but that might be 85 for some and 60 for others.

RE: Camping locally on weekends & late checkouts

Some are flexable but keep in the mind the camper who wants to come in and needs a site and won't want to wait till 4 PM. if sites are few. What about just paying for the extra day and leave when you want, even not till evening.

RE: Re: Changing my life

We comfortably tow a 5th wheel all over the country, BUT, only 26 ft. long, no slide and has a dry wt of 5,300 lbs. I wouldn't tow more than a few hundred pounds with my 2007 Chevy.

RE: Campers who leave dog poop on their site

I've often wondered how people would react if we humans defecated and urinated all over the place and yet it seems somewhat tolerated of dogs. Strange world. The same about barking. What if I "barked" all of the time at other people or ran towards someone yelling or screeching and jumped up on them. How long would that be tolerated?

RE: Campers who leave dog poop on their site

What can anyone say. There just is no reason or solution for irresponsible, tacky behavior but it is a part of life and nothing to be gained by getting too upset about it.
