RE: Cheap Generator saves lives in Tornado

Wow, fast thinking, good going! Just goes to show you that it doesn't always take the best tool to get the job done.

RE: Anybody besides me using old school WD hitch?

We have a Husky WDH and a single friction sway bar. I have felt just a bit of sway as we are passed by the big trucks but wind does nothing and it's always windy here it seems.

RE: How Do I Charge, and Maintain 2 New 6 Volt Batteries???

falcon is considering a portable solar set up. Maybe not a huge one but remember he so far has only planned on weekend trips. As long as he is fully charged before the trip there is a possibility he will be above 50% when he comes home.

RE: Champion 75531i 3100w Inverter Generator

When it comes to high altitude I can tell you that it takes a fair chunk of power away from the generator. Even using a 3500/4000 I have to be sure our battery isn't charging off of the converter before I try starting our 13.5 AC unit. That is at 9200 ft, the generator doesn't even burp at 5280 ft where we live. So if you plan on being at altitude I would suggest getting as much headroom as you can. In our case a hard start capacitor and having the battery already charged up by solar should make a big difference for us.

RE: Love at first sight

We looked at a lot of used trailers, all were filthy and in need of repair so we looked at new. We found one we just loved, set up for two with a walk around queen bed yet light and small enough for our travels in the back country. By the time we decided to get it, the two the lot had were sold. We ended up taking the next size up that we had dismissed because it was larger and had bunks. On that first trip Honey was ticked off. Didn't want that big of a trailer, we didn't need those bunks and on and on. Well we had a number of rain days and things began to change. The first trailer didn't have a couch and sitting at the dinette got old fast. The bigger trailer also had a bigger bathroom that I could use with the door closed and those bunks, well they are wonderful for putting fishing poles, coats, camera bags, extra food and even the coolers. If needed we can put a gate on the lower and put the dogs in there while we set up or pack. So yes, we had love at first site but it was misplaced. While the first model was the most popular of the line up and the dealer didn't need to negotiate, we were able to offer $1500 less on the larger rig and in practice it suits our needs much better.

RE: How do we keep 2 yr old from opening screen door?

My mom always did the "touch that and DIE" route. She lied of course, you weren't going to die but you were going to wish you had.

RE: Quad Bunkhouse TT w/ No Slide

Welcome to the forum. We have a 25 ft no slide bunk house that does well on the back roads and we pull it with Expeditions. Thing is it's only two bunks and we have no kids. lol Some models have a double bunk with a single above it. You could modify the upper single bunk to the same size as the double below it and sleep the four kids. Another possibility would be buying a toy hauler and putting the bunks in the garage. Good luck.

RE: Eco-worthy 20a MPPT controller

Wow, good or bad it's great having the controller put thru its paces even if I have no idea what you are doing.

RE: Eco-worthy 20a MPPT controller

The you tube video early in the thread pointed out the temp sensor in the case. I've seen the controller drop the amps from 12 to below 6 when the case heated up in direct sun and bring them back up once it was placed in the shade and cooled down. Too bad i didn't have a DVM on the battery to see what happened to the volts at the same time.

Same question That is just a link to the same question unanswered with you suggesting a pair of Hondas. Here is a first hand account of one in use. click Here is oe from the author of the 3000w generator thread, if anyone knows generators, it's this guy. (at bottom of page) click

All first hand accounts have been pretty good so far. There are several threads running.

Thank you for the review. I may not understand most of what you said but agree that I am happy with the performance. I look forward to your additional post.

RE: Pets are NOT to be left unattended... what??

Absolute means that even if the dogs has been debarked, the rule still reads the same. Allow you to leave your dog unattended and it's ok for everyone to do so. Dog bashing...you are barking up the wrong tree I'm afraid. We have three that go with us. They are fine unless there is something to bark at and there is always something in a campground to bark at. That's why we boondock so we don't have hear them or any others. ( or drunks, generators, music etc etc etc.) Up there you can even leave them unattended in side or outside on a tether if you want, even let them run loose if that floats your boat, their barking will bother no one. The absolute is that the critters they attract will see them as snack cracker and cheese on a string. Even in a trailer our dogs attracted a pack of coyotes, I would never leave them alone even if there is no written rule forbidding it. There was a thread like this a while back. The campground was terrible because they kicked the guy out for having his dog on a tether and was unattended for only the amount of time it took the owner to go to the bathroom. Was he suppose to bring the dog in just for that short of a time? It was well behaved, didn't bark, he was in the camper...blah blah blah. As the thread progressed it became clear that the owner was told at check in not to leave it unattended and did it anyways. Once caught was warned again and yet did it again the next day where the owner caught him and kicked him out. It wasn't that the dog barked or was viscous, just that it was unattended on a tether. The CG owner didn't care that someone was inside of the trailer working all day. (not going to the bathroom) It was his campground and his right to make and enforce the rules and in this case the rule was absolute. You may be right and the rule doesn't apply to you. You think your dog is quiet and well behaved and if so, you will probably never have a issue. Just don't be surprised if one day you are asked to leave for breaking the rules because they are the ones that interpret the rules and enforcement.

RE: Pets are NOT to be left unattended... what??

Some people just have a problem with absolutes, they bend the rules to meet their need and then get upset when asked to leave for breaking the rules. Life is good as long as they can get away with whatever they want.

RE: Costco! champion 3100w genny

What I got from the Boliy threads is if you get a good one...great. Get a bad one however and you have a nice boat anchor. Luckily for me I have a season to see how the Champion 3100i's work out. It is just going to be hard to convince Honey that we NEED a new generator when everything I've done to this point is to make it so we rarely ever have to run the one we have.

RE: Solar Panel ... This a good one to start with for my needs?

Falcon Kinda pricy but 100w will probably be enough considering your low usage, the LEDs and the 6v batteries for a weekend. Mixed reviews I am concerned about the controller being in the kit. My panels can put off some serious heat even after a short time in the sun. I'm not talking the kind of heat a little fan can dissipate either. My controller has a temp sensor like the kit too. When it gets hot, it clips the amps by more than half. as a kit, if the controller dies is the kit toast? 15 feet isn't much cord. I have 25 ft and that's shorter than you think when trying to avoid the shadows of the trailer and awning. Also my 25 ft of cords is on the panel to controller side, not the controller to battery side. The longer the run from the controller to the batter, the bigger those wires need to be. Those would be initial concerns but that said if it functions, it would probably do well for you. Personally I'd look for the components separately and get more for less money. It took minutes to tighten the screws on the controller for the battery and panel leads but now my set up is near as plug and play as the kit. Put the clamps on the battery and click the panel cords to their connectors and I'm done.

RE: Charge controller recommendations

I like my Eco worthy a lot and it makes a affordable MPPT controller to use with the larger 24v panels. That said I'd suggest sticking with PWM and spending the extra money on panel.

RE: Costco! champion 3100w genny

Professor95, author of the 900+ page 3000w genset thread, picked up one of the Champion 3100i. He gives a quick review here (bottom of page) I think I'll call CPE and see if a 3100i can be set up for high altitude. FWIW, the owner's manual shows part numbers for low and high altitude jets. Sweeetttt Thank you for that. We camp at 9200 ft + and it's nice to know it's already been considered. The house is at a pitiful 5280 ft. lol

RE: Eco-worthy 20a MPPT controller

Thank you PT, I knew it wasn't much with 12v panels. Jim I've never connected the panels directly to the battery. I have seen the panel do 9 amps on the meter and 15 amps thru the controller if that helps.

RE: 12 volt battery issues in TT

How is it being charged before you try to use it and how long? Also how old is the battery, do you disconnect it in between uses?
