RE: State CG or parks?

I missed your first post. Here is the Indiana DNR map of state parks. Indiana DNR Patoka Lake is a couple of hours from Evansville but there are a couple that are closer. Obannon is a very nice park. It's near Louisville, KY though.

RE: Sylvan Pass & Bear Tooth Hwy

After reading your post 3-4 times, I think you are saying that you want to drive the Beartooth in a loop from Cody and back again. If so, the easiest thing would be to take the toad. LOL!! YES... a loop. Guess that would have made my directions easier to understand if I'd included that detail. I'm glad you were able to figure it out and thanks to everyone that tried. We will do that LOOP in the jeep for sure. I was thinking it might be preferable to start from Red Lodge and have the sun behind us but I'm sure it's gorgeous either way. Thanks to all who have replied! I posted this on another forum at the same time and haven't gotten a single reply. Maybe no one there has traveled it?!? I'd love to hear more about the Beartooth. Are there plenty of places to pull over for photo ops? Is there a lot of traffic?

Sylvan Pass & Bear Tooth Hwy

I'm planning a trip this summer which takes us east from Yellowstone to Cody. The Mountain Directory West describes eastbound as dropping 1500' in 6 miles and a steady 6-7% descent for about 4.5 miles then the last 1.5 is a 5-6% grade. When I drove it in a van east to west a few years ago, I don't remember it being all that steep but then I wasn't concerned with a heavy vehicle towing another vehicle. I'm sure others have traveled east out of Yellowstone in a motorhome towing a jeep and we don't have anything to worry about. Right? :@ I guess the gas mileage will be really good that day! I also need opinions on the next part of our trip. I'm planning for a few nights in or near Cody. Right now, I'm really leaning toward Buffalo Bill State Park as a home base. We'd like to travel the Bear Tooth Hwy and while it would be a VERY long day, considering taking 120 (Belfry Hwy) north from Cody to either 296 (Chief Joseph Hwy) to 212 (Bear Tooth) and take the east part of it back to Red Lodge then across to 72 and south to 120 & back to Cody OR would it be better to go counter clockwise (Red Lodge - Bear Tooth- Chief Joseph)? It looks to be about a 175 mile round trip. We'd miss the section of Bear Tooth from the north entrance to Yellowstone to the junction with 296. Assuming my directions made sense, is that doable and which direction would be best?

RE: Campground Web Sites

You can alway use the satellite view from Google maps. I use that a lot when deciding where to stay.

RE: Dog Aggression

I hope you can get her figured out soon. It takes a lot of patience and consistency to change behavior like that and it's always harder to unlearn and relearn a behavior. There are walking harnesses that have the leash attach in front at the chest. When the dog pulls, it gets turned around toward you. There are also the "prong collars" that get a bad rap but if used properly do not harm the dog but do pinch a bit if the dog pulls. I agree that a physical exam by your vet is in order. Good luck!

RE: HUGE horse

Another horsey gal here! I chased cans & poles along with other speed races years...and YEARS ago. I trail ride now on a big ol' tobiano paint. Your sis's boy is a biggun for sure. We have a lot of Amish down here in southern Indiana and they use mostly Belgians for hauling & working but standardbreds for buggy work. One Amish friend had a gorgeous Morgan stallion that he used for his buggy though. Beautiful horse! I'm glad Rudy was well behaved in the trailer. One that size could really cause some issues if he got to dancing around.

RE: Need for more dog parks..

We camp with 2 boxers and if there are designated dog walks, we certainly use them and I always pick up poo no matter where it's deposited. We walk a lot though. I'm a believer in the "Tired dogs are GOOD dogs" philosophy and long walks are essential for us. We stayed at one CG that had 2 nice fairly good sized fenced areas for the dogs and when I let my 2 go, all they did was sniff around at the piles of******that the idiot owners left from their dogs on prior visits. There were bags, scoops & garbage cans right there inside the yard too! When we leave our campsite for potty walks, I keep my 2 close by and try to get to someplace that doesn't have another camper right by it then let them find the spot they need. Sometimes it works & sometimes it doesn't! Everyone needs to pick up after their dogs no matter what size the dog is (or for that matter the poo size is too!). Small dog poo piles still stink and are nasty. I would rather have no designated dog walk & park rather than be confined to walk only in those areas.

RE: GARMIN GPS, not happy any more

Timely thread since I'm considering updating our TomTom One. It still works but the maps are way outdated and it would cost about 1/2 of what a new unit costs to update. I'm looking at the 1535 GO LIVE version which has free map upgrates but charges $60/year for the "LIVE' part. I love the nav system on my Droid phone but it eats up data big time. We're on a limited data plan now and that is the main reason I dusted of old TomTom and am looking for a replacement. I used a Garmin infrequently on cross country trip a few years ago and thought it confusing but then I was used to Tom. The CoPilot software certainly sounds interesting and at that price it might be worth it to have both it and another unit. I can't find any clear cut advantage between the major GPS players. I think they are a lot like a cell phone...personal preference and what you know. I'm staying in the $150ish range for the next purchase (IF there is a purchase). Any thoughts on the TomTom Go Live 1535? PS... I think it wasn't until page 4 that someone got their nose out of joint over a comment made by someone else and the thread somewhat deteriorated. Pretty much right on schedule. LOL!

Louisville, KY RV Show

DH & I went to the Boat & RV Show in Louisville, KY on Friday and didn't see any we like better than our MH! WOOHOO!! It's not like we could have bought anything anyway but we avoided a case of the New RV Syndrome. Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of beautiful RVs and I think more this year than the past couple of years which is hopefully, a positive sign for the economy. The sad part is that this show in Louisville used to be a 10 day show stretching over 2 weekends with RV dealers from several states. It's now a 4 day show with mostly local dealers. There were high end Class A's & fivers and we saw ONE pup and ONE hybrid and lots of stuff in between. The ACE from Thor was getting a lot of interest. It was on our list when we first started looking for Class A's but lost out to our G'town because of the floor plan and smaller front windshield. They're full of cool features but we still prefer our floor plan. One thing I noticed in several units was the larger residental fridges...double doors with the freezer on the bottom. I'm sure if you're full timing, you'd appreciate one but for camping like we do, I don't think I'd want it. We noticed last year that a lot of units were using convection/microwave ovens and doing away with the little RV oven and that hasn't changed. Many didn't have gas burners either. While I've never used the oven in our Moho, I like the option of being able to use it and the burners if we don't have electric. It seemed that there were more units that had a outside "entertainment centers" this year. I did sign up for Good Sam since many of the CGs we'll stay in this summer are Good Sam members and scored 2 koozies and a small thermos! Have any of you been to or are planning to attend an RV show this year?

RE: Henry's Lake SP (Idaho)

Thanks! We're planning a 3 night stay at Beaver Creek in Gallatin NF. (We'll be coming from Glacier.) I thought about Baker's Hole but since I have to consider fly fishing opportunities, it seems that Beaver Creek might have more options. We will be staying in the park for 3 nights at Fishing Bridge then will stay in Cody for maybe 3 nights and make the Beartooth Hwy run from there so we'll be in that area for about 12 nights. I'm still tinkering with our schedule some and might carve out some time to stay a couple of nights in East Glacier. So much to see and not enough time to do it all!

Henry's Lake SP (Idaho)

I'm working on plans for our 2013 trip and had first thought we'd stay in West Yellowstone for a few days but discovered that Henry's Lake isn't that far plus it's in Idaho so I can color in another state if we stay overnight. It's also a LOT cheaper than Grizzly's and no doubt is much less crowded which are big plusses in my book. There doesn't look to be any shade but then there probably isn't at Grizzly's either. Does anyone have any experience there or at any of the other CGs around Henry's Lake? Has anyone fished it? Thanks!

RE: Glacier National Park & Environs

I'm glad I stumbled onto this thread! We're planning a trip to Glacier this summer as well. We're planning to be there Aug 1 for 3 nights and had thought we'd go to the west side and stay at either Fish Creek or Apgar. My thoughts were that we'd do the Going-To-The-Sun Hwy in our jeep. Am I right in thinking that the Going-To-The-Sun Hwy is not something we'd want to drive in our MH? We only have a couple of reservations made, one in Yellowstone & another at Custer SP for our trip home so I can still play around with our departure date. This could be the only time we get to Glacier so should I consider a couple of nights on the east side then move the the west side? If so what is the best route from east to west?

RE: How do you calculate travel time?

I use the 50 rule too! Actually after keeping track of the time we pulled out in the morning to when we pulled into the next stop, we were closer to 47. That included fuel stops, lunch stops and stops for the furkids. On the interstate we run 60-62 mph and we like to stay under 400 miles/day and really try to stay closer to 300.

RE: General TOAD Question

We only have experience with towing 4 down and I don't see how it could get much easier.

RE: What to see near I-40 between Sedona, AZ and Memphis

You can stand on the corner in Winslow, AZ. Meteor Crater is close to Winslow and is pretty cool to see. There's a really nice campground at the exit there too. The Petrified Forest & Painted Desert is worth a drive through.

RE: Forum Conduct.... Again

Well stated! One can usually expect the first critical post at about the 4th or 5th post into a thread. Many times it's a nit picking post about the advice someone offered OR what an idiot the OP is for not realizing points A, B & C before asking the question. An innocent post about the sky being blue turns into a mammoth argument about the various colors of blue, what should be down about clouds and how do we know what color the sky is if it's dark. Actually, it's kind of entertaining at times. ;) As for "searching" UGH.... I never have much luck by searching for a topic no matter what forum. I guarantee newbies hate seeing "there are multiple threads on this topic. Please use the search function" or "check the library"...blah blah. That just says "we're tired of answering that question so don't bother us". If it is so easy, then post links to the threads. Maybe for those that want to argue their point, another division could be offered and title it "I'm Right. You're Wrong" and it can be a free for all. That's not the way to grow a forum though. That's my opinion and ya'll know what they say about opinions. LOL!
