Water Heater By-pass

What is the purpose of by-passing the water heater? Why is it deemed necessary?
My pup has survived two Canadian winters without one. I've merely run anti-freeze throughout the system, including the water heater.

RE: Propane Odour

To Beacher: The smell is only outside - there is no odour inside the trailer, so it isn't surprising that the detector has been quiet.

Propane Odour

This camping season, the hot water heater has been giving off a strong odour. The pilot is working OK and the burner seems to be working well. Why then is there a strong smell of propane when the heater is fired-up? There is no smell when turned off.

RE: storing pop up in the snow

Our Clipper has lived through 3 Canadian winters - NEVER COVERED - it is my understanding that coverings are not recommended. In the lot where I store it, there are a dozen or more pups and NONE are covered with tarps during the winter.

RE: Just Bought a New Pop-up -- Questions!

My TV is a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe with 2.7 V6. The owner's manual is quite clear - if the trailer has NO brakes, the tow limit DROPS to 2200 pounds. I bet the Kia manual says the same thing.

15 amp service

We have always plugged into 30 amp service. A campground we are considering has 15 amp service. If we connect our Clipper pup to this service, what will operate in the camper - and what will not?

RE: 2006 coachmen clipper classic 1270st pop-up

You will NOT LOSE a) breathable tenting, b) a one-piece door, nor c) electric brakes. Even my Coachmen 1070ST has these features.
You will gain a) the power roof vent - I wouldn't buy a pup without one, b) a wider stance for greater stability, and c) a front storage compartment.
Quite frankly, we shopped all the makes and models when we bought our pup new, and the Clipper outshone all the others. And it has lived up to our expectations.

RE: Looking to get our first Popup w/ a Hyundai Santa Fe

Our Coachmen Clipper has electric brakes. If it did not, the tow rating of our Hyundai Santa Fe would drop to 1500 pounds.

RE: Looking to get our first Popup w/ a Hyundai Santa Fe

We own a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe with the 2.7 L V6 engine. The towing capacity stated in the owners manual is 3500 pounds. Is your Santa fe a 4 cylinder vehicle?
We tow a Coachmen Clipper 1070 ST with a dry weight of 1900 pounds and when loaded I guess it would be around 2800 pounds. We do NOT have an anti-sway bar nor a weight distribution hitch. Neither has been required.
The Hyundai is an exceptional tow vehicle for our trailer. And we manage 23 mpg (Imperial) with the loaded trailer in tow.
We have had it 2 summers and have travelled the rugged coast on the north shore of Lake Superior. The Santa Fe took all the hills in stride.

RE: top-down access

Having to load some items into our pup, I lowered the 4 latches, raised the roof, and pulled out the front bed - in 2 minutes, 37 seconds.

RE: Any recommendations on a new pop-up?

We end up with duffle bags and things on the floor and there just isn't anywhere to walk if we need to be in it like if it rains.
We used to rummage through suitcases and backpacks but found a terrific alternative - plastic drawer sets. Available most everywhere (bought ours at Wal-Mart) they are like the dressers in your bedroom. We have 3 sets with 3 drawers in each. All our clothing goes into them and our food too. We place them on the beds during the day so they take up no floor space.

RE: Any recommendations on a new pop-up?

Makes and models might be recommended, but I'd look for certain features instead. For example, I cannot imagine having a popup WITHOUT a front storage compartment and judging by the size of your gang, I think you might be a prime candidate for a pup with one.
As well, I wouldn't be without a Fantastic Vent and fan (or equivalent) in the roof. There are makes which do not have this feature.
You might find an outside shower a real asset with kids in tow. Not so much for showering, but for cleaning dirty feet when returning from the beach.
There is no doubt that a slide-out adds a great deal of extra space. Worth considering.

RE: High Wall popups

High Walls often have many advantages.
They have complete kitchens rather than just galleys, featuring ovens, microwaves, double sinks, and more counter space than most 30 foot TTs. The refrigerator (4.5 cu ft or larger) is more than double the size of the standard 1.9 cu.ft model in many PUs and includes a freezer.
The most common length is 14 feet, and when a slideout is added the interior room is considerable. Many have complete septic systems featuring grey and black water tanks. AM/FM/CD units are often standard as are hookups for cable/satellite tv. One feature I like is the interior console with on/off switches for the furnace, water heater, and propane, items which I have to do manually and outside on my Clipper PU.
A HW is worth a close look, but their size and weight are quite daunting compared to my 10 foot PU.

RE: Advice on Pop-ups.

There are 15-20 advantages of a PU over tent camping. If you wish I will list them for you in a separate posting.
I almost never see a PU with AC here in the Great White North - all have furnaces though. But I am sure the opposite is true for those folks living in the southern USA. Whether or not you get AC should be governed by where you live and especially where you intend to camp.
Truthfully, it takes us almost as much time to set up the PU as it did our tents. Without doubt the most time-consuming task is getting the PU level. But we are getting better at it as we gain experience.

RE: Fantantic Vent Installation

Haven't started yet because the only Fantastic Vents I've found were on EBay and coming from The States. I've hesitated due to possible duties et.al.
In the meantime I've used the time to venture forth to dealers to check actual models and prices. The result is that I will have to measure the vent on my Clipper because the models I have seen look larger. I want to be certain a Fantantic Vent will fit.
Also, I discovered the Maxxair vent and fan which has a built-in rain screen "system", an impressive product but pricey.

RE: (?) for Popup owners:

A. I camped in tents for over 30 years including wilderness canoe camping
B. Here are some of the reasons for getting a PUP
... an entrance door rather than zipping and unzipping a tent
... running water, instant hot water, and a sink
... comfortable seats rather that a hard wood picnic table
... much warmer - the furnace
... instant-on lights rather than flashlights
... plug-in appliances
... being able to get dressed sitting on the side of a bed rather than on the tent floor
... a refrigerator instead of a cooler with items floating or submerged in cold water
... indoor, accessible storage rather than having to beetle back and forth to the vehicle
... not having to inflate mattresses
... sleeping off the ground in comfort
... no moat to dig when in a downpour
C. We purchased a Coachmen Clipper Classic 1070ST.
D. It has exceeded our expectations.

Fantantic Vent Installation

My 2007 Coachmen 1070ST has an archaic little ceiling fan and vent and I plan to upgrade to a Fantastic Vent, model 4000R. I am hoping to do it myself with able assistance from a friend.
Have you any suggestions regarding the do-it-yourself installation?
