RE: Moving On

Thank you all so very much for the kind wishes... We have enjoyed our time with the RV's and have made a ton of lasting memories... Our 30 day trip out to the 4 corners area 2 years ago was a trip of a life time and a great way to finish things off after nearly 30 years of RV'ing with visiting all those wonderful National parks in the area... For those of you still in the life style, I wish you big blue skies, warm weather and great campsites... To Pulsar and Arizona Kid, good to see my buddies are still around and kicking - I wish you all the best too... To my fellow members, I'll give you a peek at what "the old guy" (67) looks like, and one of my other passions which ran in parallel with my RV'ing and which I will be doing a lot more of... Les this my granddaughter and I running "The Dragon" 2 years ago on my previous 1993 GL1500(Deal's Gap - TN #129) http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/nomad27/Blue%20Ridge%20Parkway%20Ride/Dragon2corrected.jpg And this is me and my buddies in New York last year - notice the tip of the trailer attached to my 2009 GL1800 - see - I do tow other things :B http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/nomad27/2012%20September%20New%20York%20Ride/DSCN0127.jpg

Moving On

Just wanted to tell all my Travel Trailer people that the wife and I are moving on to another chapter in our lives after 30 years of RV'ing... We have sold our rig and will be moving south in a few months and RV'ing will no longer be a part of our lives... We have had a wonderful time with our many RV's but now it's time to travel a bit differently and do some other things as well... And with that, I will be leaving my Moderator position and turning the reigns over to Shavano... Don is a good guy and has already started to Moderate in this and other Forums and I know you all will help him out as he takes on his new duties in Travel Trailers and Hybrids... I'll still be around, but with far less activity...I wish you all the very best and hope you enjoy RV'ing for as many years as we did - it has been a good run... Les - Moderator - TT/Hybrid/DIY Forum

RE: CONVERTER

WALTER H C Using all capitol letters on a forum is construed to be the same as shouting and is considered by most to be rude behavior... Unless there is a physical need by yourself to use all caps such as a vision disability, please use lower case letters when typing... Moderator - TT Forum

RE: New Keystone Cougar

If your going with the standard friction sway bar you will need 2 of them with a rig that long and heavy... I would seriously think about the Reese Dual Cam or Equal-i-zer as others have suggested... Les

fixitman11, Using all capitols is considered to be yelling when your on the Internet and is usually considered rude behavior... Unless there is some particular reason you need to do this like vision difficulties, etc, please turn off your Caps Lock and type in lower case letters... Moderator - TT Forum

RE: Locked power box at campground

I have seen many times where a camper will come in to our local state park well after dark, plug in, and then pull out before the rangers can make the rounds in the morning. That wouldn't work in our Illinois State Park (Rock Cut) as the entrance gates are locked at night and then opened in the morning by the Rangers... What park are you speaking of in Illinois???

RE: Digital thermostat HELP!

I would guess (without seeing the installation instructions) that the Red wire would go to the RC/RH (RC & R on Honeywell stat??) terminals... Les

RE: Axel and tire failure under 3000 miles

Welcome to the "wonderful world" of poor quality, poorly engineered RV's... This si sooooo prevalent in the RV industry and has been for many, many, years... I am sorry for your trouble, and hope that this issue is covered under warranty but I wouldn't hold my breath on it... This is so typical where the RV manufacturer will blame the axle manufacturer and no one takes responsibility for anything... Good luck - keep us informed... Les

RE: Another "Please Help Me" Thread

Run the numbers on your truck - your on the right track looking at payload... You have a #1560 pound payload and you say you'll #700 of passengers and cargo... The trailer has a dry weight of #5990 or round it off to #6000... Most campers will load from #500 to #1500 of cargo, water, etc into their trailer... Assuming an average of #1000, that brings you to #7000 TT weight... Tongue weight, which has to be added to the truck's GVWR rating (payload), at 13% of that will be #910... #910 + #700 = #1610 or #50 over your max payload... Add a Hensley or Propride and your looking at another #150 in additional weight... So it all boils down to how much weight your going to carry... If you load heavier than the #1000 estimate, you'll be over weight, if you load lighter, you may make it in under your ratings... The way it looks from my chair it appears that your going to be very close to or over the max payload (GVWR) of your truck unless you load on the light side... Looks to me like you might need a bit more truck or a little less trailer if you don't want to be concerned with what you load into the TT and subsequent tongue weight and/or premium hitch... Good luck :W Les

RE: Andersen Hitch Revisited

Okay, so perhaps not one part changed on the truck. However, the manufacturer's understanding of how weight distribution via a WDH affects vehicle stability apparently did. Ron Ron, just to add a little food for thought; If Ford (and possibly other truck manufacturers) are now rethinking their recommendations on adjustment for their trucks while using w/d hitches, realizing that were initially incorrect, what makes anyone think that the advice they are now giving is correct??? :H Just Say'in :E :R :W :B Les

RE: Need some towing advice

Rule of thumb is use the same gear down the hill as you used up the hill - I have found that to work quite satisfactorily in the past... You have an advantage with your 6 speed trans that those of us with 4 speed transmissions don't have - a wider selection of gear ratios... I've been up and down the Rockies with my 10K trailer and 3/4 ton truck with 4 speed trans... You can certainly make it with your setup - use common sense while descending and don't let the speed build up... If your using your transmission properly, only a touch of brakes should be needed at any given time descending your hills... Les

RE: Teaching wife to tow a trailer

Taught my wife at her request - she wanted to know just in case anything happened to me - was a good idea I thought... She did well - better than she thought she did - she was a bit nervous, but that was normal for the first few times... She never tried backing and that was OK - this was an emergency thing only - she still prefers that I drive, but she can haul it if necessary!!! :B Les

Why not try running it direct to conform if it's the motor or not??? Les
