RE: D.H. Day Campground - Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore

I've walked thru many times and saw that my 5er would fit in some sites where it wouldnt in others. The sites parking area are gravel and pretty level. I prefer the Platte River CG but have stayed at my Mesick property and driven over to scout out a site and if I find one, I pay and go back to pick up my unit. Many times (early) I'd wait at the office for it to open to be the first one in line. Would imagine if D.H. Day was busy you could do the same, arrive early. Bill

RE: Wish me luck.

You'll make it fine, don't hurry, relax and let the others rush past you. Good luck and have fun. My first long trip was to Ceder Point, I survived the wife and my two kids and the two cousins. That was when I had a TT in 93. I've upgraded or graduated to my fifth wheel and Jazz my dog. You all will have a blast! Bill

RE: Dogs on Leash Rules

I do not like dogs that are off the leash. My opinion,,if your dog ran at me while walking my dog, My Jazz would protect me, and it makes it more difficult for me to control mine none the less two now if your dog was on a leash, no problem at all and my Jazz would want to play. Bottom line ,,,,,leashes were made for dogs and no and's, if's or but's about them. Bill and Jazz.:B

RE: almost wiped out a Yugo

Actually, planning ahead sometimes creates the problem. I usually drive in the 'slow lane' but when, on a freeway, I approach an on ramp and see vehicles coming down the ramp, I make every attempt to go into the next lane to assist those vehicles with their merge. More times than I'd like, a car that I've moved over for, will then drive next to me usually next to the 5ver. They will stay there for miles and match my speed. The problem is usually solved by a slight wiggle of the 5ver to get their attention or else the turn signal together with my moving to and on the lane stripe between us. Course when it's an 18 wheeler next to me...
When they are merging, it's up to them to go faster than you or slower than you. Merging means they blend into the traffic flow, but then, it seems like a lot of drivers don't know that. Absolutely correct! Bill

RE: Airline to Cruise Ship or a Motorhome Trip

Flying is still the safest and quickest mode of transportation, however,, I'll stick to the ground because the scenery is better. Whatever changes are made by the airlines are to make it safer for us, but a few weeks ago the U.S Government Airport Security manuel got posted on the internet and wow did it give away our ability to be secure at the airports. If we stop our day to day choice of transportation than the bad guys win. Bill

RE: Physically challanged & entry steps

My wife's mother is 91 and recovering from a pelvis fracture. She lives and travels with us. What can we do with our current coach to assist her in climbing the 6 steps from the ground to the living area? The entry door is up front since it is a diesel pusher. She will be walking but we are afraid the steps will be a problem. She was climbing them before the fracture but getting slower as time went by. I looked and see no lifts or ramps that are for use with this front entry door. The only portable ramp I could find was a 10 foot long ramp. I was even thinking of putting something like a ramp up every time she needs to enter or leave. She could limit this to once or twice a day probably. But even a 10 foot ramp would be pretty steep but could eliminate 3-4 of the 6 steps. Any other people know of a solution?

RE: Using cell phone while driving to be outlawed in B.C.

BTW I totally agree with the cell-phone ban. I very nearly got hit by an Excursion the other day. Woman (yup, sorry ladies) driving had her cell-phone in one hand, lipstick in the other, looking in the visor mirror and trying to navigate a parking lot steering with her elbow!!!
I saw her coming and stopped as she tried to make a turn. Sure enough she swung way wide, right into the space I would have occupied had I not braked.
We came nose to nose; Did I ever give her a earful!! (Yes she heard me, turned red and never said a word!).
But the law would not apply in a parking lot would it - private property etc?? Careless, reckless, alcolol, driver license violations apply to any area accessable to motor vehicle's in Mich. So in a business parking lot the one jabbering on the phone who hits some one or forces them out of the driving area would fall in to careless or reckless, willful or without willful and wantom disregard for people and property. But no where near enough enforcement to do a job.

RE: protection... I don't get it.

Decided to apply for a "License To Carry" LTC in my resident state. Looks like no issues and expect the LTC to be issued shortly.
But EVERY State has a different set of laws as it relates to LTC, and ability to transport of a firearm in a vehicle.
I thought a firearm would make sense, both as personal protection while on the road AND when if we got work in back country out west... might be handy to deal with assorted varmints.
Looks like it would be near impossible to stay in compliance with all the State laws.
May have to take on that rattlesnake with a baseball bat... or take a revolver and just hope it never gets put to use.
I must be missing something... there has to be a better way.The better way is to not ask about the carry issue in the forums, you'll open a very big can of worms, you will be bombarded with the-- why you need to. Good luck. Bill

RE: Driver Swapping?

I've been laughing so hard I couldn't stop reading but I just thought I had to add to all of your concerns...My wife and I use to drive our 75 foot long tractor trailer all over the country and we use to slip seats all the time. Once I even wrapped a bungee cord around the steering wheel and put my 150 lbs rot/Shepard in the drivers seat with his paws on the wheel and told the driver behind us to come on around I was going to take a nap and let my co-driver take over. I just stood back holding the bungee on cruise. Boy was he surprised when he got along side. Thousands of drivers in MH's, tractor-trailers or what ever do this sort of stuff everyday...And it takes a lot of practice to be good at it. But you know there are a lot more cell phone related accidents in America than there are just plain being stupid and getting away with it. Apparently you all don't know the half of it. Just drive Safe and always be alert to every split second decision you might have to make to save your life and others. It's not your actions that save lives but your reactions that make the difference. Oh and by the way we're older and retired now and we don't do that stuff anymore. DRIVE SAFE MY FRIENDS!!!
I said this exact thing on another thread.
It used to be very common for long haul drivers to switch on the fly.
It is also not unusal for a bored trucker to be reading a novel while driving down the road.
My cousin started driving (unofficialy)with his older brother at fourteen, hauling coil steel on a semi, they used to switch off on the fly all the time.Life is sure short, death is forever and stopping takes far less time, but I'm sorry wherever you switch in motion is careless or reckless driving, only difference without wilful or wontom disregard for people or property then the wilful and wontom disregard for people and property, your choice! Either way its costly $$$$$$.

RE: First 5th wheel- What things will I need to get started?

Just take alot of $$ and a few hours at a RV supply store, you'll do just fine, then after your first trip return with more $$ and you'll do even better. Then later after seeing other folks toys you'll go get even more, for me it never stops. Bill

I found that sticking your head out the window doesnt work, neither does slapping your face nor having the radio way too loud, and coffee didnt work either. Only thing for me was stopping and a quick cat nap. Bill

RE: Ok...who got the best TT related xmas present?

I gave (got) the best Christmas present to my beloved DW = a clothes hamper on wheels that fits into our shower and will permit her to wheel the dirty clothes to the laundry by herself. Am I the best or what? Camp on! Did the neighbors call the police when they heard the domestic dispute?:E
