RE: Northstar quality?

My NorthStar 850SC has been a GREAT camper for my uses. I have been through all continental 49 states and many of them more than once since 2008. The roads in Death Valley (to the Racetrack and from Teakettle Junction to 190) and some in Alaska and the Northwest Territories) are really rough but the camper has held up very well which tells me that the construction is first rate. I have been back to the factory twice, once for installation of the Arctic Pac and again for some minor repairs and have been treated very well. The cabinets may not be as fancy as some would like but as far as I am concerned are fine. The camper is fast and easy to set up and take down. Any questions PM me. Grant

RE: Northstar pop-up 850SC

I have an 850SC and have put over 80,000 miles on it since 2008. In another 1 1/2 weeks I will return home after about 15,000 miles on this trip. On all my trips I have been on more than a few rough roads (nowhere as bad as the Great Whazoo's travels) and it has held up very well. In 2010 I returned to the factory as I was headed home and had the Arctic pac installed. Then about two weeks ago I again stopped in Cedar Falls, IA for some repairs necessitated by extremely high winds in California. A phone call to Rex and an email a day before the day I was to arrive and all was set for them to work on the camper. I could not have been treated any better anywhere! I love the cassette toilet but have never used the shower inside. If something were to happen to this camper I would never hesitate to get another NorthStar. Any questions about my experiences do not hesitate to PM me. Grant

RE: Suggestions wanted for small travel trailer

Thanks for the fast replies and information. It does appear that I will have to go back to the drawing board as I am finding that no one agrees on the amount that my Jetta can tow! I find figures all the way from 500# to "in Europe they are rated for up to 3000#. Quite a spread I must say. Again thanks for all who responded.

Suggestions wanted for small travel trailer

I am considering getting a small travel trailer such as a Scamper to tow with my 2007 diesel Jetta Sportswagon. I have seen the Scamper and Casita brands and was wondering if there are others and what experience anyone has had with them. For the most part it will be used by a maximum of two people plus a dog or two and might be used on some gravel roads. I would want at a minimum a toilet, decent sized refrigerator, furnace, two beds, sink, stove and water heater. Any suggestions/recommendations would be very welcome. Thanks in advance.

RE: Hard or Soft?

I have a Northstar850SC and love it after around 60,000 miles of travel and camping. The soft side is NOT noisy in my opinion and I have been in some strong winds that really rocked the truck but no flapping etc. It takes only a couple minutes to raise and lower the top. Even for a "lazy" person it is simple and fast to set up. The toilet is barely useable when the top is down which can be a drawback for some. I have a 2007 Dodge 2500 similar to yours except I have a 5.9L Diesel. I did add airbags to level the truck and a sway bar. No other alterations and the truck handles the camper just fine. I travel with 2 labs and there is plenty of room for us. Any questions PM me if you want. Grant

RE: Wireless Rear View Camera

I installed a wireless camera last summer on my NorthStar 850SC and wired it to the running lights so it is on all the time. So far it has worked very well. I opted for the small monitor rather than the mirror monitor. If the monitor needs replaced I will consider replacing it with a mirror type. The depth perception is not perfect but it does show who is tailgating me and lets me know if there is something close behind when backing up. The biggest problem I have had with it was when driving on the Dempster Highway in the rain. The mud covered the lens and had to be washed off when dry roads were found. Grant

RE: Senior Pass Question

I wish that ALL my investments paid as well as the Senior Pass. I now have two since when entering Shenandoah National Park I left it in the vehicle and was with a friend in her car. since the admission was $25 and the pass $10 it was a no-brainer to buy a second pass!!:) I'd buy one a year if needed as the $$ go for a great cause AND I love the National Park system. RE: in bed or behind truc standard 7 pin plug

The dealer installed an inbed connection that worked well for a few years then I had issues with no power to the camper. Discovered that there was a problem where the bumper plug and bed plug were connected to each other. Disconnected the in bed plug and all is well. For towing a trailer without brakes I have a 4 pin plug in addition to the 7 pin so no problem there. I have found that it is much easier for me to connect and disconnect the camper from the bumper plug than it was with the bed plug. Somehow I'd get the camper loaded and find I forgot to plug the camper connection in! Drive forward and repeat process with camper plugged in. GRRRRR.

RE: On the Civil War Trail in TN - Shiloh NMP added on Page 2

Thanks for an excellent report. I have been trying to figure out where to go after this winters trip to Whazoo country and think you may have pushed me over the edge to spend a couple months traveling around the Civil War grounds. i will start this July at Gettysburg to see two days of reenactments etc. Now to start planning for 2014 and the Civil War. Thanks for helping to make up my mind! Grant

RE: Lost my best friend and traveling companion today

So sorry to hear about your loss of a very SPECIAL traveling companion. My two labs have traveled all 49 continental states and several provinces with me the last few years and have made the trips much more enjoyable. I thought I was going to lose my youngest (5yrs) a few weeks ago but she pulled through OK but I wasn't worth being around for a full week! I have lost several labs in the past and still miss all of them. The memories of all the good days along with time will help to diminish the pain. Grant

RE: The Last Whazoo-Thanksgiving continued

Dave, I will be one of MANY who will miss your trip reports. I hope that at some time in the future you will reconsider and provide all of us with more of your special talent for photography and narrative. This report is, as always, excellent! I am very happy to see that Bear was able to accompany you again. I have missed his appearance in some of your adventures. Give him a biscuit for me and tell him that Skye and Scoter say woof, woof, arf, bark, whine.(hello and Happy New Year"). Thanks again for all your efforts and the time you have taken to share your travels. Grant

RE: Campin with cow dogs...how many TC people..??

I travel with two black labs - Scoter 11 1/2 and Skye 5 years. It wouldn't be a trip without them for company and I can't even imagine leaving them behind! Grant

RE: Backup camera installation question

Photomike, Thanks for the info on not having the camera on all the time. I could mount it to the back of the camper but hate to drill holes in the wall. It may come to that however. Grant

RE: Backup camera installation question

Normally they are wired to the backup lights but I plan on wiring them so it can be on all the time so I can see what is in my blind spot or tailgating too close to see. My main concern is that If I attach the camera to the top section how do I run the wires so that when the top is raised it will not stretch, break or pull out the wire and yet have the wire not hanging outside. Backup camera installation question

I am going to try to add a wireless backup camera to the Northstar 850SC popup to hopefully keep my light lenses in one piece (don't ask). It is an "RV" type camera that mounts on the camper itself rather than bumper or license plate since the camper extends behind the bumper and I figured the overhanging camper would mess up the coverage. The question is how to run the power wires without ending up with leaks or other complications. Suggestions??? Grant

RE: Word of advice for the day.....

Sorry about your problem. I came VERY close to doing it a while back. When in a hurry anything is possible no matter how careful we try to be. Darwin strikes again! Grant
