RE: over donner's pass

Donner Pass (I-80) is a big, long hill that takes a beating every winter. Trucks chain up, cars slide and skid, and RVs crawl. In the summer the CDOT usually repairs the road, due to the heavy toll the traffic takes on it during the winter. It's an OK drive, but can be tough depending on your ability to climb hills, pass a slow moving vehicle, or crawl at a slow rate. Not really accurate. Traffic moved along slowly during the re-construction of the roadway from the Nevada state line to Nyack. Now that the work is completed there are very few if any delays along I-80 over Donner Pass in the summer months.

RE: Hwy 1 and 101 California

I've done that route a few times in our 32' MH and pulled a toad, too. I think it's doable the whole route except the piece on 1 from SF north to about Jenner (even that can be done but it's no fun). I'd take 101 thru SF and all the way up to Santa Rosa, then take River Road out to the coast or Jenner and go north from there. It's a beautiful road all the way to Oregon especially thru the redwoods. Lots of great state parks up near the Avenue of the Giants. Hwy 1 ends 200 miles South of the Oregon border.

RE: Sacramento CA to Bishop CA

The real problem with that route is the traffic south of Reno -- many stoplights. The other problem is that the scenery is so good that you have to force yourself to keep your eyes on the road. Not since the freeway was finished

RE: Good article on the Zion subway

In the London Mail: Subway Those photos are mainly HDR which means it doesn't look that way to your eyes. I didn't know they have started a lottery, I've never been down there since my wife would never make it. Why do we have to find articles like this in the Brit papers? They seem to cover the US better than our joke of newspapers do.. BK It's not new, they have had a lottery for hikers of the subway for as long as I can remember.

RE: Camping near Incline Village - Lake tahoe

+1 on what Jim said, Zephyr Cove is a good choice if you want to be at the lake. The other option is Coachland in Truckee which is 5 miles closer to Incline Village.

RE: Yosemite.... Makes me sick!!

There are some county campgrounds on Hwy 120 about 2 miles off 395 coming from Lee Vining its on the East side of Yosemite park but a easy day trip over to Yosemite valley. Plus side great fishing on Lee Vining creek, June lake loop, Mammoth Lake. Check out monocounty.org campgrounds for a list of campground and other points of interest. Great place to stay but 2 hour drive to Yosemite Valley from there, maybe longer on 4th of July weekend that OP wants to go.

RE: another question Zion tunnel to Bryce

Thanks for your help. Now to evaluate whether to take 14 from Cedar City or go up to 20 then down to Bryce. Very scenic....18.5 miles up and just after you pass the turnoff for Brian Head at a little over 10,000' you go 18.5 miles back down. It is mostly steep, twisty, curvy two lane but as I said, very scenic. No place for an RV. :C Funny, I've taken that route a couple of times with the rig in my signature with NO problems at all. Yes it is as you described but no troubles at all for an experienced mountain driver.

RE: Chevy Diesel

My 06 has had problems with idler arms and front wheel bearings along with transmission cooler lines. Surprised nobody else has mentioned the idler arm problem, I was told it was inherent with this model truck. Other than that it has been a great reliable truck.

RE: Eurekas Ca. to Redding Ca.

Thanks everyone for your input. Highway 20 it is. As soon as the winds let up tomorrow morning we are off to Eugene to get our solar installation checked out at AM Solar. We then will take the highway to Reedsport and head south to highway 20 in Cal. We have reservations starting on the 24th across the street from Disneyland. Can't wait to get our of this wet stormy slog. I feel pretty blessed to be able to leave this wet climate. Good choice on using 20 to head back to I-5. You mentioned getting out of the soggy climate up in Portland. Just so you know, it's going to be very soggy in No. Cal as well all the way up to 12/24. Big storms with heavy rain and mountain snow forecast to start Wednesday night all the way through the weekend.

RE: Best campground near a California ski area?

Truckee has Coachman RV park open in Winter with easy access to Squaw, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Sugar Bowl and Homewood along with a couple smaller resorts. South Lake Tahoe has some RV parks open in Winter, easy access to Heavenly, Sierra at Tahoe and Kirkwood. Reno has RV parks and fairly close to Mount Rose and a longer drive to all of the resorts mentioned earlier in my post. You will need to have a toad or rent a car to get to the ski areas as there are no RV parks at any of the Tahoe ski areas.

Repairing a hole on siding

I put a branch from a tree through the phylon(sp)on my trailer. Talked the the service guy at the local RV repair shop and he said no problem with fixing it. The hole is only about 2" in diameter and went through the phylon and luan backing as well as diplaced some foam in the wall. didn't go through into the living space. I'm just not sure of what to expect as far as the extent of the repairs. Do they have to replace an entire panel or do they usually just repair the area around the hole. Thanks in advance for any insight anyone might have.

RE: Air quality in Truckee?

I'm not in Truckee but it's hard to imagine that there would be smoke on a mountain top, unless there is a local fire. You can see stars forever up there. Smoke is particulate matter and once it cools from the initial fire tends to settle to low lying pockets. (valleys). Truckee is not on a mountain top, we are in a basin on the East side of the Pacific Crest. Smoke causes problems here often but not at all right now. The fires to the North of us are causing very little if any problems.

Shortbed for 5th wheel

We are in the market for a new truck and plan on upgrading to a 5th wheel in the near future. I don't want to get a sliding hitch if I don't have to but heard that it is needed fo a short-bed PU. The 5th wheel we are looking at is a Big Horn by Heartland and they claim to have a good turning radius with no need for a sliding hitch. Any thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated.

RE: Sacramento Area to the Coast Up to WA

Another vote for 20 to 101. You can get on 20 in Yuba City and head West to 101, a lot easier and quicker than going North to Redding and 299 to 101.

RE: San Francisco - where to stay?

Candlestick RV park is in the heart of the worst neighborhood in the City. If you like being lulled to sleep by the sound of gunfire, that's the place to be!

RE: RV Forum Firefighters/Police Network

24 years in Seattle too, Seattlefirervr. Now recently retired and hope to be teaching some RV driving, sailing, fishing and traveling! I love the PD when we radio in Code Blue, or whatever the number is now. They all come a running and I feel much better. But watch them cower away from a burning building and I just chuckle. It looks a lot more inviting to me than a crazed man with a gun. LOL Congrats on the recent retirement! Ladder 4B here. All joking aside, when I ask for SPD in a emergency for Fire Personnel, they come immediately, without question, by the dozens. I am glad to have them by my side. Enjoyed your city last weekend, went up for the Giants-Mariners series. Downtown companies looked busy, just like where I retired from. I sure don't miss those middle of the night medical calls!!

RE: South Lake Tahoe to Vegas

Wow, 8+ miles ~ that's a good way to ruin your brakes! Thanks for input ~ appreciate. We'll take the Hwy 50 route! :) Good choice but take it slow heading down the hill on 50 after Spooner Summit. Good 4 lane hwy but curvy and a good distance of downhill. Costco at bottom of hill if you need to stock up.
