RE: What to do about Aluminum Siding

I have a 75 mh and paint had faded badly, especially on the south facing side as it sits in my driveway. Paint was originally a metalic bronze/copper/brown color. I found such a paint at Wal-Mart, bought a can and tried it on an "inconspicuoous" spot. It seemed to match. I used a grease fighting dish detergent and wet/dry sandpaper to wash the siding I was going to paint. Rised well, used spot primer in a couple of places, then painted the old sections on both sides of the mh. Also noticed that the trim, above and below the faded sections needed help, so sanded and painted them as well--red and white. Been over two years and mh still looks good despite outdoor, uncovered storage and extremely high temps here in the SW--40 miles north of El Paso, TX. I think I used about 10-12 cans of paint.

RE: Internet Access

Just noticed on the news tonight that the FCC is announcing some new rules regarding the internet that will stop servers from "filtering" or slowing certain downloads. Evidently this is is common with Comcast and some others who slow downloading of films or tv shows. New rules won't allow them to do that, espcially if you're paying for the service in the first plaace. FWIW, I'm not impressed by Comcast; super fast internet really isn't.

RE: renovating/redecorating

Re: the re-upholstery issue. If you're handy with a sewing machine, it can be done. I'd suggest with the sofa, take the upholstery apart carefully and use the old upholstery as a pattern for cutting out the new material. Might want to take pictures as you go along to help when it comes time to put everything back together. Painting the cabinets and other wood in the mh is very do-able. As with most paint projects make sure you prep the surfaces properly. Scrub, a light sanding and then use a stain killing primer. Cheaper than replacing--and easier. Good luck.

RE: What soap for Splendide washer?

What brand has she been using? If she's happy with it, why not look for that brand. I'll tell you one thing, I will in no way, shape or form, ever second guess my wife on soap! She knows what she likes, and what she likes is what she gets!

RE: Camping cost again.

I think perhaps some women reject "camping" for one simple reason: it's the same as staying home except without the household aids. From what I've seen in lots of campgrounds, women wind up doing the cooking, washing dishes, cleaning the rugs, floors, tidying up after the kids go swimming or boating, putting wet clothes out to dry, etc. And, for the most part they don't have a dishwasher, clothes washer, heavy duty vacuum cleaner, etc. to help them out. So why would they want to leave their nice comfy home to go "rough it?" Meanwhile, if the men want to go, let them! Gives mom a break!

RE: New to this, 1986 Chevy Crossman 23' Fixer Upper, now what?

We bought a 75 Ford E350 with 70,000 plus miles. Did the brakes, shocks, tires, replaced the toilet and wife made new upholstery for the seats. Also had a leak in the roof air conditioner repaired and new gas put in. Works very well. Mattress got wet when the vent, which was plastic, in the overcab area leaked. We placed the ventj, then went to an upholstery shop and purchased a new piece of foam for a mattress. Wife made a new cover for it and we're happy. I also installed a new hatch for the outdoor electrical plug and added a cable tv hook up as well. Two weeks ago I painted all the trim using spray paint from Wal-Mart. We use it for long week-ends away from home, and being retired that means often, though we haven't driven more than a couple hundred miles from home. We did drive it from Wyoming to NM when we purchased it and didn't have any problems, so I don't figure we'd have any driving it long distances. It's just that with mileage about 7-9 mpg, my Goldwing is cheaper. Course with the Wing the motel costs more, but there are always trade-offs.

RE: Leveling ramps

Bumpy, I put a couple side by side and they cover my duals pretty easily. Actually, right now I've used an entire set to level one side of my mh.

RE: Leveling ramps

Camping World and Wal-Mart also sell some orange plastic blocks that stack together to do the same thing. They're light, inexpensive and come in a nice little zippered bag.

RE: Fair price for a tune-up

Couple of questions and a comment. Why should a motorhome be jacked up for a tune-up? Who makes the OEM parts? I ride a motorcycle and Honda has its own brand of motor oil. About $4 plus a quart. I use Quaker State. Much cheaper and works just as well. Who makes Honda oil? Not Honda, that's for sure. They also don't make their own fuel filters, etc. So wh;o makes sparkplugs, fuel filters, oil filters, air filters, wiring systems for Ford and Chevy. They probably buy from the lowest bidder who also sells to AutoZone, Checker Auto, Pep Boys and Wally World. Want to pay more, go ahead, but you're paying more for OEM from the dealer. A whole lot more!

RE: Good Sam Insurance is the WORST insurance in the world!

Two things to do. First, contact your state Attorney General's office and send them a description of your problem and the paperwork you've submitted plus any other correspondence you might have with the insurance company. Send a copy of this letter to the insurance company. Second, contact an attorney and have them write a letter to the insurance company asking for a complete and total resolution of your claim.

RE: Filling water at destination

RGar mentioned filling up at the dump site. Be very careful. Most water spigots I've seen at dump sites indicate the water IS NOT POTABLE! Do not drink it. If in doubt, ask a camp host or ranger.

I've also heard that you had better have a copy clutched in your hand when you enter the hospital, otherwise, they'll do whatever they wish.

RE: E-350- Chassis work/ repair

I use a local auto/truck mechanic. Note: I said mechanic; not technician. All techs want to do is read a computer print out and pull and replace parts. My mechanic will not sell you a complete air-conditioning system when all you need is a fan switch. He's been great over the years and I trust him implicitly with my vehicles. When my Hyundai needed an alighnment, which he doesn't do, he recommended a specialist, called him and made an appointment for me. The specialist gave me a discount because my mechanic said I was a regular. Can't beat that. Latest thing he did was complete tune-up, filters, flushed transmission, checked suspension and steering. Only problem he found was rear brakes will need work--not an emergency--bring her in when the weather gets too cold to use the rv. Price, $400. Can't beat that.

RE: Wondering why ...

Sorry if I offended, but it still seems ridiculous to me to think that some folks on here are plunking down many thousands of dollars to buy something that they admit they know nothing about. I just don't get it, but then maybe I'm the stupid one. RE: my stove. I had conducted every search known to mankind on the internet, talked to a couple of "service technicians" who suggested replacement, and also read the manual and an RV repair book. Coming here was a last resort--not the first. Meanwhile, by doing the above I've managed to figure out how to clean and sanitize the water tank, how to clean the grey and black tanks completely, the difference between the two colors of tanks. I've replaced the toilet, shower head, vent covers, re-upholstered the couch and dintette, made and installed new curtains and re-enforced the floor. Also, removed and cleaned and tuned the generator, replaced the muffler, shocks, sway bars, radio. Also installed a tv and dvd player plus a microwave. But, I didn't pay $50,000 plus for my mh either, so maybe my concern is that I don't have enough money and therefore need to pay more attention when shopping. Ooops, that sounds elitist doesn't it?

Wondering why ...

We've all heard that there is no such thing as a stupid question, which means that the person asking the question must be, right? Anyway, I am amazed at the number of folks who indicate they've just bought an rv/tt/etc., and need to know about licensing, insurance, stocking, how the heater, stove, toilet, furnace, etc. work. One would think they would have asked about all this before plunking down anywhere from $10,000 and up. I mean, do these folks buy a house without checking to make sure the toilet flushes, the doors open and close, the closets are big enough for their clothes, and so on? Do they buy a car and then ask about whether it has cruise control, automatic transmission, air conditioning? I sometimes wonder how some of these folks get out of bed in the morning? Just watching a boring ball game and wondering out loud. Anyone have any suggestions?

RE: What is the main obstacle to swivel cab seats?

Our 75 Ford Class c has swiveling seats on both sides; however, because of a bench behind the driver's seat that one doesn't really move. The passenger side does move and once we set up it swivels and allows more room.
