RE: Can I tow ANYTHING with a 3500 lb hitch limit?

We to are limited with a 3500 tow rating with a 2002 Acura MDX. We bought a Skyline Nomad 140, which ours says on the side that it's 1955 pounds dry. We have absolutely no problems towing at all with it. I put on a Reese class 3, with the Reese Mini Lite WD/Sway control bars. Here's a link to the TT. Nomad 140 Thank you for another TT to look into! I did look and isn't the dry weight in the same class as the R-POD 171, as the specs online say dry weight is 2025 lbs and you are towing with the MDX...rated at 3500 lbs.

RE: Can I tow ANYTHING with a 3500 lb hitch limit?

These "what can I tow" questions always seem to contain a can of worms. As long as the discussion stays civil and does not become personal the banter can continue. Personally, I find it kind of interesting to read the various opinions. :) Barney YES, I agree that this is very good. So far I am impressed that people can have good, and different, ideas and still keep it civil. We should all be Congressmen and move to DC. :-)!

RE: Can I tow ANYTHING with a 3500 lb hitch limit?

Keep in mind that a new TV is out of the question. Our MKX is a 2012 we bought 6 months ago! I did not know this would be opening a "can of worms" as we are up to 6 pages now!

RE: Can I tow ANYTHING with a 3500 lb hitch limit?

No, you have a front wheel drive TV,the all wheel drive kicks in when needed. It's not to say they don't tow,my co-worker went from a Explorer to an Escape with a 12' pop up. The biggest restriction is surface area of the front of the trailer. You can't pull a barn, and TTs are. Horsepower is misleading,it means how fast you can go,torque is how quikly you can accelerate, unless going down hill, that's what towing is. YES, I found a 34 page pdf from Ford and they show that I am OK in all cases but ONE. They list the max area of the trailer as 31 SQ. FT. That, to me, is quite small for a non-popup.

Here is a nice compact Cabin-A3 Expedition, self contained, hard sided unit. You can get more pictures with a Google search on the model.Check this one out. ...but from what I can see they are no longer made...at least I can not find it.

RE: Can I tow ANYTHING with a 3500 lb hitch limit?

Thank you for your great post, Gdetrailer. In spite of what the dealer says, I am surprised at the posts that say that they did do what I wanted and were NOT happy! That, to me, says a lot. I have a lot to think about, but wonder if there are any very small 10-12 foot units that we can use going to a Motel destination and just give up on CG's. Just something with a toilet and something to keep a few things cool.

RE: Can I tow ANYTHING with a 3500 lb hitch limit?

WOW, I had no idea this would be a 4 page question! :-) Anyway, the towing package on our AWD MKX does have the included sway bars and they say a WDH is NOT needed. However, I am starting to believe that an R-POD may not be for us. At any rate, perhaps we should look into a very small TT...like 10-12 feet that has a toilet and place to make a small lunch. Then we can just stay in a motel, etc. Lots to look at! What makes it hard is that for everyone who says "Go for it" there are also those who say that 3,500 lb class II is too small for the R-PODS...any of them! I am surprised, however, that the dealer says he does this all the time and has never had a customer have an issue. I must admit that I would wonder how the MKX/R-POD would work when an 18 wheeler passed! Also, a popup is OK, but It sure would be an issue to pull over and use the "Rest Room" in it. I sure can not thank all of you enough for your information and suggestion(s)!

RE: Can I tow ANYTHING with a 3500 lb hitch limit?

Thanks again. Also, the dealer in the Portland area has both the RPOD and the Livin lite. The Livin lite is WAY more $$$ though. I plan on looking at them both. As I said, I posted here because I thought a dealer would say I can tow anything with the MKX!It sounds like the dealer is more concerned with your safety then making a sale. Kudos for the dealer. No, it was not the dealer who said it was not OK, but Forest River. However, I did speak to the dealer and he said that the unit dry weight is low...about 2205 lbs...and that I should just travel with the tanks very low. The Fresh is 36 gallons and the 2 black and gray are 35 gallons each. He said to travel with 10 gallons fresh and dump the waste tanks before hitting the road. Seems to make a lot of sense.

RE: Can I tow ANYTHING with a 3500 lb hitch limit?

I believe your MKX with the tow package has transmission cooler, ford's electronic sway control and over 300hp. I see no reason at all why you can't pull an r-pod with it, I would think this is a very good match as long as you don't go crazy loading it up. Maybe dealer would let you do a test drive with the trailer? Yes, and that is why I was surprised that Forest River did not suggest it! I called them as I had thought that a dealer would say anything was OK in order to sell one!

I agree and was afraid of what happens when you hit wind. Airstream looks good but I believe even their sport model is heavy!

RE: Can I tow ANYTHING with a 3500 lb hitch limit?

Jayco SLX 145RB and several others starting at about 2,400 lbs. Thank you. I was excited about the R-POD as well, but they pointed out that the low dry weight will not mean I can tow it OK when water and clothing, etc are added. I will look into all of these as there may be hope yet!

RE: Can I tow ANYTHING with a 3500 lb hitch limit?

Sprinter was small as it did not have a down bed and tanks were small. Tired of having to dump every 3 days! I thought the R-POD with the down bed and 35 gallon tanks would be good and we could drive around with the MKX and leave the R-POD in place at CG. However, IF we can't tow an R-POD, then going VERY small so we have a bathroom and a small place to grab a snack in route, would be ideal (staying at motel). Something very small, perhaps 10' non-popup, that we can hookup fast would be ideal. Still, I am so sorry we can not use the R-POD...it seemed ideal!

Thanks ALL: First, the MKX is AWD, and we do not want a pop up. We will look at the ideas given.

Can I tow ANYTHING with a 3500 lb hitch limit?

Hello ALL: We had a Sprinter B that we sold as it was too small. My wife got a new 2012 Lincoln MKX and it had the towing package. It said the hitch was good for the standard 3500 lb max load that even our B would would tow. I was looking into a Forest River R-POD but in spite of what dealers say, Forest River said that they would NOT tow it with the MKX. Is there anything that we could get? At times we thought it would be OK if we just had a small 10' that had a toilet and small place to make lunch, etc. We would then just stay in a motel along the way. Thanks all!
