RE: Trade in Ontario class A in Q...Insurance issue to get home

We've done this twice, once in Q. Had exactly the same problem taking our rigs back to Alberta and BC. Was no big deal to get insurance in the US, which we cancelled as soon as we got home. Then you need the RIV inspection and the out-of-province inspection to got your domestic insurance and registration. This all took about three days once we got home. No big deal. I purchased a new rig in Indiana last August and had no problems at all getting it insured by my Cdn insurer. A simple phone call was all it took and we were covered for the trip back to Canada. Must be a policy of your insurance company. We are covered by TD.

RE: 2006 TIP

Your new passports will solve the problem and you can not worry about the old TIP. Our passports had just been renewed last year so were good for another 4 years and their system would have shown the old 5th with a TIP still outstanding. What a stupid system!:S

RE: 2006 TIP

Your old TIP will still be in the new system. Mine was a 2006 also and it was still there this summer. After all the hassle and expense I went through to get the old one cancelled, I will NEVER again cross back into the US without turning in my TIP. It is a huge PITA to get it cancelled via mail. Your 2 months buffer is a marginal amount of time to wade through their system.

RE: km 21

Rob has got it right. Tip online and do a walk over to Algadones for your tourist card FMM and you are good to go. Will save you at least 2 hrs on your first day SOB! But, isn't it kinda a long walk from Nogales to Algedones??? :W

RE: Lukeville vs Nogales crossing

Does anyone do the online FMM and then by-pass that part of the line at KM21 and go directly to the Banercito with all paperwork to pay and get stamped? Well I know that as I get older I'm not as quick at catching things as I used to be, so this must be one of those things. Where do you find an online site where you can get your FMM? I have done my TIP online for several years but have never seen or heard of getting your FMM online. Please post a link to the site. Thanks.

RE: TIP Cancellation mail Question

Final update: I finally got confirmation by email today the my old TIP has been cancelled. I dealt at length with a gentleman in Aduana and after sending him the letter from my province's Vehicle Registry they approved the cancellation and forwarded the info to Banjercito who actually does the cancellation. It took a half dozen emails to Banjercito because they couldn't find the info on my TIP in their database but it's now done........YIPEEE! As I stated in my last post, I will never again come home without cancelling my 10 year TIP. It's just way too much hassle and time to get it cancelled from here. I'll gladly pay for a new one each year from now on.

RE: Diesel Fuel

Not sure if the thread I have copied from is the "firestorm" mentioned above, but here is some pretty detailed (and accurate) information on diesel in Mexico. Note in particular the last couple of sentences for an answer to your question. Info on Mexican diesel

RE: USLD workaround

We have not driven to Mexico since 2006 but are going down in Feb 2013 in our diesel truck pulling our 5th wheel. Is this post saying that Mexican diesel cannot be used in US diesel vehicles? Thanks for the help. It can void your warranty , so just as you should not drink the water, Dont use LSD if your Veh requires ULSD The efforts of the Mexican government to make ULSD available have met with limited success so far. Owners of vehicles which run on ULSD can purchase the fuel in Northern Baja. Unfortunately, PEMEX gas stations located in Southern Baja sell only LSD fuel brought from the mainland. To find the stations with ULSD, look for the words "bajo azufre", which translated means “low-sulfur“, below the word "Diesel" on the gas station signage. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Bajo azufre actually does mean "low sulfur" or LSD, it does NOT mean ULSD. The designation in Mexico for ULSD is UBA, and you will not find it.

RE: New Mexican Immigration Laws

All this discussion and it ends up that Harold did not have an FMM that was extended. He likely had an FM3 which was a one year permit that could be renewed every year for 5 years. This is the same permit that IS affetced by the new regs. As for an FMM why would you say that it can be renewed in Mexico? Yes there are people who have gone to an airport or gov. office and it was renewed. But not legally. They paid mordida. How about providing some real links to educate us on the other "facts" in your post? Moisheh It seems you are an authority on Mexico and all the laws pertaining to visiting or living there. Are you a Visa attorney or employed by the mexican consulate? Please share a link for the changes you refer to. We will be returning to Mexico next month and would like to know what changes could affect my crossing. Since you seem so knowledgeable about all things concerning visas and immigration, you should have no problem getting the information about the changes that will affect you here: New Immigration Rules The rest of us will likely just rely on the condensed version as supplied by the OP. Happy reading! :B

RE: New Mexican Immigration Laws

There may well be a number of RVers who have FM 2 or FM 3 status and read this forum but.. I doubt they really pay any attention to the rumors and all that come from this forum. These people who RV in Mexico with an FM 2 or 3 are seasoned Mexico travelers, who have jumped through all the hoops, to gain that status. Thinking they need, or even heed, any advice and rumors from here is a fantasy. This forum is more geared towards the first timer and newbee who is still trying to figure it all out. Trying to build rockets over a law that does not concern the people here looking for guidance is pointless and a waste of time. If this forum is so bad, why are you here? Although I sometimes don't agree with some of the information posted, I always find it interesting to read.

RE: How do I avoid the mountains between Helena & Idaho Falls?

Take I-15 as far as Boulder then turn onto #69 to Whitehall. Then take #55/287 to Twin Bridges and then #41 to meet back up with I-15 at Dillon. This is a great totally flat route through some pretty ranching country and it bypasses the big climb to Butte. Plus it saves almost 30 miles. By far the best way to go! From Dillon south, you really have no options other than I-15.

RE: Canadian Satellate Tv in the USA

It's a good idea to take them with you. Just a word to the wise from my "mistake", I had a new PVR and LNB installed at home, and took the new receiver with me in the RV (it had the old LNB on the dish). The calibration for the new LNB on the receiver is different than for the old LNB, the receiver didn't work with the old LNB. Shaw can recalibrate over the phone but it cost me a $12 Rogers cell call to get it done on the road. Shaw has great customer service, you leave your number and the tech calls you back, no need to wait, but the combination of the two calls is what cost. When I got back I ordered a new LNB for the RV from Shaw, they charged me $11 for the shipping, the LNB was free. Bottom line, its better to fully convert or leave as-is, don't mix and match LNBs home and away if you are taking your receiver with you! Was your old dish a round one by any chance? I spoke to Shaw yesterday and they advised that if your old dish is a round one, it will not work with the new receivers, but if it is an elliptical, it will work with both. I have an elliptical at home and another that I leave in Mexico, and I was worried that I would have problems with the new receiver in Mexico this winter. Shaw says I won't, but I'm still a bit dubious.

RE: Canadians - importing a travel trailer from US?

Be careful which state you buy in. In Indiana, you pay sales tax regardless if you are taking the TT out of state. The state legislature changed the law a few years ago and have put our RV dealers in a bind for out of state sales. dont believe so...I just got 5 quotes from Indiana dealers and none were charging state tax. Good luck with that thought... a quote and the final bottom line payment, are two different animals... Indiana Gov. loves money. I just purchased my RV from a dealer in Indiana last month and there was NO sales tax applied. The dealer gets around the tax issue by delivering it to another State and turning it over to you there.

RE: TIP Cancellation mail Question

Another update: I emailed Banjercito and was lucky enough to get answered by a fellow who provided me with an email address and phone number for contacting Aduana in Mex City. I tried emailing but got no response so I tried phoning. They have a 1-800 number that works from Canada or the US BUT, it gets answered by a multi-layered call-direction system (for xxx push 1, for xxx, push 2 etc)that is all in Spanish. I finally got through to the correct dept and managed to find a guy who spoke English. I explained my problem and he told me that all they really needed was something from the Alberta Vehicle Registery stating that the trailer has been registered in another name. He said they don't even have to have the name or any other information about the new owner, just an official statement from them, on letterhead, indicating someone else has registered the vehicle. (I don't know what I would do if the other guy intended it to park it on an acreage and not register it but thankfully my buyer did register it.) So, I went to a Registery Agency and they provided me with the appropriate statement ($25). My contact had said that I could email that to him and he would check it out and let me know if they would accept it as the required proof, and if so, I would then send the ORIGINAL to them. I did this, and now have received an email back from him telling me that the document I got from AVR is good and I can send it to them and they will cancel my permit. So, tomorrow, back down to DHL to send in the original for another $62. LESSON LEARNED: I will cancel the 10 year permit every time I come back from now on, and get a new one each time I go down. It's just not worth all the hassle if, for some reason, you need to cancel it from outside of Mexico. Update: I received a Registered letter back today (all in Spanish) telling me they needed either the ORIGINAL or an apostille copy of the new owner's registration. The new owner of my old 5th is from out of town, so I will be unable to get a copy of his registration and of course there's no way I could send the original. I sent in all the documents they asked for on the Request form (Bill of Sale, hologram and permit, proof of residence, copy of my passport etc etc), but now they want more. It looks like I'm hooped now, as they have my hologram and permit and I can't send them what they are asking for. Looks like the only alternative is to change the registration of the new rig over into my wife's name. Anyone have any other suggestions?????

RE: TIP Cancellation mail Question

We had to do a lot of juggling on DHL's computer to get it to look like that. I guess I was worried for nothing. DHL reports they delivered it and it was signed for at the destination. What is truly amazing is that I shipped it on Tuesday and it was delivered the following day, Wednesday at 16:26. Update: I received a Registered letter back today (all in Spanish) telling me they needed either the ORIGINAL or an apostille copy of the new owner's registration. The new owner of my old 5th is from out of town, so I will be unable to get a copy of his registration and of course there's no way I could send the original. RE: Weber Q100 BBQ problems

We too have had a problem in the past with an oily residue in the lines. This is due not just to butane, but also due to poor storage of the propane which does develop oils. The small jets in portable BBQ regulators can become plugged with this oil. We regularly hang the hoses in the sun and let the oil leak out. as I said, we hang the hose in the sun every once in a while and let a bit of oil trip out. We also had out propane tank cleaned 4 years ago and got rid of a lot of oil. I've had the same problem and you are correct in the cause and the fix. It's nothing to do with Butane used in Mexico. If you use an extension hose from your tank to the BBQ you are more likely to encounter this problem. Make sure you turn off the tank first and then turn off the BBQ after the hose has no gas left in it.

RE: Problems downloading Streets & Trips 2013

Graydon - you could try downloading it from their website and then activate with the product code. I have the problem that I can't purchase the downloaded version from Canada. You can purchase from Canada. Just fill out the download request using a US address and then use your Cdn credit card. They don't check the billing address against the CC. I did this and it works just fine. :C

RE: Streets & Trips 2013 & Mexico

You can't order it on line unless you have a US credit card & address. No pay pal option either. Sure you can. Enter a US address and your Cdn CC number and go ahead with the download. Works just fine.
