The Cummins symbol on the Valvoline is just for marketing between the two companies. Valvoline is no more superior than any of the other brands. Heck the best additive package in a dino oil comes in the Mobile Delvac. Factory fill for Cummins might be Valvoline. Highly doubtful dodge's factory fill is Valvoline. When you go to the dealer for an oil change you never know what 15w-40 they may have. They are going to go with the lowest price oil that meets spec.

This is a late response I know, but "just say no" to flushes and band adjustments on the 48re. Stick with the 30,000 mile filter and fluid change and you will be fine. Over filling the 48re is not an issue. You can go 1/2" above the full mark and have ZERO adverse effects.

RE: Dodge 48RE Reliability?

The 48re is a great transmission. It can handle stock power all day long. A 40hp tune driven sensible will probably not hurt the tranny in the least. Add major power and you WILL smoke check it. Ensure that what ever you look at buying, demand tranny serving records. Long life of the 48re depends on scheduled fluid and filter changes of 30,000 miles. Remember, the allison is a 4 speed auto with dual overdrive. Just like the 68RFE and AS68RC. A 6 speed tranny is ideal IMO. The gearing is closer which keeps the RPM's in a more suited range, especially when towing heavy. There is a lot less RPM drop between gears on a 6 speed than an auto. Prime example is the NV4500 5 speed manual. I believe the complaint is the 3rd to 4th gear shift can take you out of the sweet spot when towing heavy. The NV5600 pretty much eliminates this with the added gear.

Dynatrac locking hub kit installed on my Ram

My axle u-joints needed replaced. I knew that dissassembling everything would ruin the hub bearings. So I sprung for the Dynatrac kit. The Dynatrac kit, axle u-joints and grease ran me $1900. I went over to my buddies yesterday and we got to work. He did his truck by himself 2 months ago and it took him all day. Needless to say he learned and knew what to expect when we did mine. He has all the tools that one would ever need for this job. Tooling was never an issue for us. We started around 11am and I torqued the last lugnut back on around 2:30 p.m. So yes, it only took us 3 1/2 hours. While he was doing one thing I was doing another. We never took a break. As most know, the hub bearings are a pain in the "ahem". And they were a pain for us too. My truck was in TX till Oct 06 and has been here in MD up to now, so half of its life it has been in mild winter conditions here in MD. The left hub bearing gave way and popped off after about 10 minutes of beating it and heating it. The right side was another story. We beat it and heated it to no end. It finally let a pop. That pop was not a good pop. It seperated itself. We just kept going till it fully seperated. At that point we grabbed the cutting torch and showed it who's boss. Next was the axle u-joints. Here again, we didn't even think about messing with the axle u-joints. We torched them out so all we had to do was knock the caps out. The left u-joint was toast. Clicking and binding. Right side was somewhat smooth still. My truck has 115,000 miles on it with all original parts. I used Neapco axle u-joints. P/N 3-0485. They went in with zero issues. I will post up any mileage difference I see. I am not expecting anything drastic, but anything is better than nothing. Especially since I religiously get 19.5 - 20 mpg commuting. Here are few pics. Sorry about the first couple of pics being blurred. They were with the cell phone. Since I have aftermarket rims with more of an offset (yes they are dirty and that is my next project), the hubs barely stick out. I think it looks pretty good. We cut my existing center caps to fit over the new hubs. The pirelli scorpions feather really bad on the outside edges IMO. I knew two guys with excursions that had them and one guy with them on his Ram. All 3 trucks showed the feathering. And yes, they kept them aired properly. I currently have the BFG Rugged trail T/A's. I like them tons better than the Michelin's that came on it.

My 04 with 115,000 miles. Only time it has been to the dealer is to have the door seal TSB done and the manual high idle turned on. My repairs.... 85,000 new front pads. Didn't even turn the rotors. Rotors don't need replaced or turned unless they are damaged. ANother old wives tail myth that ppl can't let go. 89,000 removed the stock lift pump and added a glacier walbro pump. Didn't have to, just preventative so I didn't get stranded. 115,000 miles installed the Dynatrac Hub kit up front and new axle u-joints. That's it for me.

RE: Dodge Cummins Oil changes

Amsoil Marine 15w-40. Amsoil EaO80 filter. Once a year or 25,000 miles whichever comes first. I am on my 3rd oil change going this route. I hit the one year mark before hitting the mileage. Not by much though. The past two oil changes have been right at 24,000 miles. There are a lot of old school non-believers on extended oil changes. They still think oil needs changed every 3000 miles, because that is what their papaws did. Times and engineering have changed. I have the oil analysis reports to back up my oil change interval. The oil comes back well within limits and could stay in there longer.

My $30.00 Wal-mart grill did not make the list either. Oh well. Yeah, what's up with that? I have a $30 wally world special that I got 3 years ago for full timing. That thing has had at least 20 midsize bags of charcoal burned through it. Steak, burgers, wings, chicken, hot dogs, pork chops and Pizza all come out awesome. There is no replacement for charcoal. :D

Good Link. Thanks. On my last trip to the butcher shop, I just couldn't go $13/lb for the ribeye. One thing I definitely love about MD... Nick's of Calvert runs awesome sales on beef. Right now Delmonico Ribeye is on sale for $4.69/lb. I have gotten NY Strip for $2.79/lb. Hmmm, think i will go an pick up a half a slab of Delmonico's today. :D

Don't know if this applies to you, but I looked out one night and saw that the brake lights were on in my truck. After checking a few things I realized it was caused by the brake-controller for my 5er. I just moved the little plunger a couple of times and it corrected itself. The dealer told me on that model (Huskey) year that dust will get in and allow an electrical connection to make the lights come on. The company corrected the problem the following year. You might check that if you have a unit in your rig. My neighbors F350 did the same thing. It was his brake controller causing them to come on and go off on its own.

Any fluid that meets DEXRON III requirements is suitable for use in the Allison 1000 that is behind the Duramax. The chart/graph above above would be correct for a Dino fluid. Allison recommends using TranSynd which is a group III hydro cracked fluid. The graph above does not not apply to a synthetic fluid. Dodge's ATF+4 is a hydro cracked group III synthetic also. A quick synopsis on ATF+4 development: Developed to meet or exceed ISO standards for fluid shear, viscosity, wear, and evaportation. Testing dictated the fluid met all of the above requirements at 310 DEGREES for 1500 HOURS. Field testing was done in taxi cab fleets in major cities to essentially provide a lifetime fill for light duty passenger cars and passed the test.
