RE: Ford F-350 Diesel

FWIW, SWMBO says that I should only drive regular "single-cab" pickup trucks.....because otherwise, I just toss everything in the back seat: boots, clothes, hamburger wrappers, old newspapers, receipts, etc. :)

RE: Ford F-350 Diesel

FWIW, I had 2 F350's (1st one was stolen), crew cab, long box, dually, 6.0 engine, Lariat Trim Package. One was 2x4, 2nd one was 4x4. Really loved the truck. I had no problems with the 6.0 engine towing a 16K 5th wheel. The cab room was awesome and the ride quality was what I expected (and wanted) from a truck. I traded the last F350 because I got out of the towing game and no longer needed dually's. Got a new and nice Chevy Silverado 2500 HD.....perfectly happy with it, but in hindsight, I should have got the equivalent F350. Oh well, SWMBO likes the Chevy.

RE: ULSD on Alcan in Jan-Feb

Thanks for the input, y'all. Primary worry was how many places shut down (these days) in the winter and if ULSD had made it to the North. Sounds like ULSD won't be a problem and finding a location that is open will not be an insurmountable obstacle. Tank on truck is small (26 gallon) but aux fuel of 20 gallons gives an effective amount of about 40 gallons....circa 600 miles if pushed. Joe b.: Sad to hear that Toad River closed for the winter, hope that is not a harbinger of things to come. I REALLY hope that Rancheria Lodge does not close down. That was one of the places I overnighted on that first trip up many, many years ago.

ULSD on Alcan in Jan-Feb

Looking for any insights since my knowledge on this topic is very dated. #1 son will likely be driving our '09 Chevy Silverado from Seattle to Anchorage in January or February 2010. Being an '09, it likes Ultra Low Sulfur diesel. Recognizing that many places along the Alcan shut down in the winter, what is the sense for availability of ULSD in the cold months? thx PA12DRVR

RE: When you do something this fun, you just have to share

Thorough write-up, but not, IMO, free from bias, beginning with the starting point of "ours vs. theirs"....

RE: Ford 6.0 vs 7.3

Two F350's (both 06 and 6.0)...didn't get to 100K; 1 was stolen by a guy that obviously hadn't heard about the 6.0 problems and I sold the otherone with circa 80K on it. No problems with either one. Had a brake master cylinder problem on the first truck, but that doesn't seem like a 6.0 problem to me. Towed a 16K 5th wheel with both trucks. No programmer, etc.

RE: need help from weight police

Rubio, There is a Loves (IIRC) just outside of Katy and a Flying J in Brookshire: both have scales which never seem to be busy and are always open. Might be worth looking into for weighing just the truck, just the trailer, etc.

RE: fifth wheel length - practicality

I had a 25' Travel Trailer (true length), a 31' travel trailer, and a 39' 5th wheel. My experience (and future preferences when I start RV'ng again) are based on a couple of state parks here in Texas and a couple of state parks in the Carolinas that we visited every year for 8 years; - None of the rigs were any problem towing on the highways or around gas stations; I had to think a bit about stations with the 39' 5th wheel towed by a full size crew cab F350 dually....so I got an extra fuel tank in the bed. - With the 25' travel trailer, I could get into any spot in any park (or obviously, any commercial campground) - With the 31' travel trailer, there were several identifiable spots that I COULD NOT get into with that trailer, but I could still find some spot in almost any state park - with the 39' 5th wheel, at the favorite state parks there were only 1 or 2 spots that I COULD fit into and that involved lots of hassle such as going the wrong way on the loop, ensuring the guy across from me didn't have an equally big 5th wheel, etc. Long story short, in retirement, we'll be getting a 5th wheel that is 33' or less in true length or maybe a travel trailer of 30' or less. We don't want to have any restrictions on state (or national) parks.

RE: Can I bring back my catch?

One aspect to keep in mind. Once your catch is cleaned and frozen, it is processed fish for personal use. The possession limits no longer apply. We have brought back as much as 20 cf frozen before. I was wondering when this would come up. I can't recall the exact specification...hope to reacquaint myself with the F&G regs in the very near future!!!.....but whether it's cleaned/frozen, made into filets, etc, after some level of "processing" the fish no longer counts against the "in possession" limit. Trick is to ensure that you're "processing" an amount suitable for personal use and that the amount of "product" you have is not so much that it approaches a reasonable suspicion of commercial/resale use.

RE: FORD-UAW issues

This posts is hilarious.................TO ME.......................Being a business man who owns and runs and employees my workers, I have but one question for you??? "If he had that vision he could now be several billion dollars richer as it seems no one else saw it coming. I think it was just luck that Ford was running low on dollars before GM and Chrysler, forcing Ford to make the move to secure loans early. I am a Ford retiree, have worked both sides of the fence, hourly and salary also a Ford stockholder. IMHO when Bill Ford finally knew he was in over his head and took on Mulally was the best move he ever made and will give him credit for that. Mulally is good, he proved that at Boeing. But had Ford gone bankrupt and Mulally's pay had been decreased he would have left. He in no way has the same stake in Ford that many of the hourly and lower salary workers have. Mulally could care less if the folks both hourly and salary on the factory floor have enough money to eat or have insurance. He also proved that at Boeing. " Why does an employee think me or others as owners, OWE you anything , except a pay check? x2

RE: What do people want from their news ?

Another problem our current news programming has is "what is news". On a scale from one to ten where does abortion/healh care/the economy/wall street debacles/high crude prices and the why's/religion/Afgan war/home and foreign terrorism/mid east problem/crime and drugs/unemployment/outrageous exec bonuses/Michael Jackson/Iraq war/etc. Where does all that enter in news programming agenda on the 5 o'clock news. McCarthyism type nationalistic bilge is rearing its ugly head again in a different form in the last 10-15 years although hopefull mainstream press/media isn't being sucked in as happened in the '50s red scare that ruined many innocent American lives/careers. Whats news ?? Anyone want more Michael Jackson on the 5 o'clock news. Good point of history. Slanted view of history...would be a good addition to the thread without the insertion of the obvious opinion as evidenced by the use of the derogatory term "nationalistic bilge".

RE: Looking for the Silver Bullet!

No silver bullet, but if you hit the fence/post/tree with your brand new 5th wheel on the first backin experience, that rapidly brings you to a point of being more precise in the future. How would I know that! :)

RE: Has anybody had trouble with the towing mirrors on a GMC?

I have everything except the "fold" feature.....seems to work fine. I'd guess that it is a dealer problem.

RE: Not that it matters to anyone else.....but

"The plane getting finished, sounds as if you could be a difficult man to find, once it is done and you guys are back in Alaska." Well, I still have to work, but having negotiated a pretty generous vacation package....I suspect that the amount of time spent at the house will be quite minimal. No. 1 son has pointed out all of the areas of the state that he hasn't hunted yet that would be perfectly served by a PA12. He's also pointed out that winter is a great time to chase coyotes. Not sure that I want to undertake a lot of winter activities in January and February after having been in Texas for several years.

RE: Not that it matters to anyone else.....but

PA12, it has changed over the last few years. Seems to me it used to be set at 4 years? Is it going up or down on the next change? Technically, the "duration" would have to go to 7 as of either next Monday or Tuesday...however, the big thing is that the "temporary" displacement is becoming exceptionally temporary, something in the nature of 45 - 90 days...sometime in 1Q of the new year, the displacement feature will go away. Regarding the aircraft, the PA12 is a Supercruiser with an 0-320 (circa 350 SMOH, IIRC) that is currently being rebuilt with ALL the Alaska mods (read = Big $$$) anticipate ready for covering in January. One of the mods is an STC for that can accomodate "any 0320 with X mount" or " an 0360 with Y mount".....if bonuses pay out as anticipated, there may, just may, be a 180 horse in the future, but still worried about how those shake a 63 year old airplane.

RE: What would you pay?

Sometimes these issues strike me as self-imposed problems that you don't need.....I'd suggest that you look on this board, look at Craigs lists, look at used on dealer lots, then decide what you are willing to pay and what unit/condition you have to have. Once you've decided what you're willing to pay, then go find a unit at that price in the condition you want and buy it. Of course, try to make a good deal that is based on the value of the unit, but if you've done your homework and decided what your price threshold is and can get a unit within that price threshold, why bash about being concerned if the other guy is getting a good deal? Key thing is to determine your price threshold and have it set in stone before you begin making or accepting offers.

RE: Do you like your pellet stove?

On sort of a tangent, are there pellet stoves that are made to run from 12V power as the primary power source (i.e. not a backup)?

RE: Cruising to Alaska

Thing to do is look at the "side trips" or "side activities" that you want to do and look at the time you have on your stops and then look for vendors that offer those trips/activities within the time frame, but look for vendors who are not associated with the cruise line. Never done a zip line, but for some of the more generic stuff (boat tours, flightseeing, etc), there are usually unaffiliated vendors who can offer the same service for cheaper price.

RE: granite countertops

All I can point out is that granite was a $10k upgrade to our current house when we bought it new....our real estate agent said if the cost was an issues, not to worry about it since we would only be in the house for 2-3 years (our plan) and, besides, Corian had been the best countertop just a few years ago anyway. Fast forward 8 years...our fault for staying longer than planned, but when the same real estate agent is now trying to sell our house what does he say? Well...."I have to mark the price down since you don't have granite" I'd recommend to get granite countertops and get the best granite you can afford.
