RE: New puppy Ben moves in!!

There is nothing wrong with feeding a dog "people food" unless you have someone giving items that are inappropriate or giving too much of any one thing or everything. With small dogs the quantity issue is a very important one and easy to mis-calculate. People give a dog under ten pounds a "bite" and don't realize it is a meal for that size dog. Problems will then ensue. Yep. And then the human blames it on "people food" in general instead of on their own poor judgment in feeding way too much, or the wrong thing.

I love a good pun! And the bad ones are pretty funny, too. ;)

RE: New puppy Ben moves in!!

Regarding another comment: I prefer that my dogs eat people food in addition to their dog food.. For starters - it gives me a "powerful treat" - a reward for really good behavior. The backbone (IMO) of a "Bombproof Recall". It also gives me something to feed a dog who's not feeling so great. Or to hide medicine. Or to clean up what the grandkid dumped on the floor....LOL!! Good for you! It boggles my mind how many people believe fresh, healthy, "real" food is somehow bad for dogs, and that highly processed dehydrated little bits are healthy. :?

RE: Severe weather alerts via text message to cellphone?

NOAA has an app. Sends alerts. I cannot stand accuweather or weatherbug apps. Constant crashes. I use the NOAA weather radio app. I don't know if it sends texts or not, I use the notification feature on my phone. My brother and I were comparing my NOAA app with his Accuweather app yesterday as all sorts of warnings (tornado watch, severe thunderstorm warning, flash flood warning) were going off in our area. The NOAA app performed much better.

RE: Blind Dog

There is a Yahoo group called Blind Dogs. Lots of people who have tons of knowledge about living with blind dogs. One of the most helpful tips I read there is to scent the tops and bottoms of your stairs with something. Apparently flavoring works well. So you could put a dab of vanilla flavoring at the top of the stairs, a dab of lemon at the bottom. You can also use a different flavoring to mark the door outside or any other important points.

RE: Is there a cure for a smelly washing machine.....

I use bleach in our front loader and it does the trick. Put in a cup or 2 and run the machine empty with hot water. You don't need to use anywhere near that much. Just put some in the detergent dispenser up to the "normal" fill line. That's a couple of tablespoons or so in most machines, and is plenty.

RE: Is there a cure for a smelly washing machine.....

I'm on my second front loader and neither one ever smelled (despite the first one having a huge reputation for odor issues). As others have said, leave the door cracked between uses and once a month or so run an empty cycle with one of the cleaners made for this purpose (Affresh or Tide) or bleach. I usually just use bleach, since it's a lot cheaper, something I always have on hand, and is recommended by the manufacturer. My current machine has a "tub clean" cycle specifically for this purpose.

RE: chock full 'o ticks!

I agree that it probably had a lot more to do with where the dogs were walking than the products used. Also, many people don't understand that Frontline Plus is NOT a tick repellent. It will kill ticks within a short time after they come into contact with the pet's coat. Advantix (supposedly) is a repellent.

RE: Securing dogs at campsite plus flea & tic control

We also used Frontline Plus for many years and were advised by our vet that they are seeing resistance in fleas & ticks because the product has been used for so long. The newest product that was recommended to us, was Activyl Tick Plus(flea protection also). It is only available at a vets office as of now. It is made by Merck. We are currently using this. Our vet is using this on his dogs too. Just as an FYI for anyone who might be interested -- There's a new Frontline product available in the southern states called Tritak. It looks like it contains an extra ingredient (cyphenothrin) over what Frontline Plus has. My vet group says they're now carrying Tritak instead of Plus. I have no idea why it's only available in the south. According to their website it's available in these states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

RE: Securing dogs at campsite plus flea & tic control

If I was worried about having them tangled I'd probably tie 1 to the picnic table, and 1 to the hitch or something such that they could interact a bit but not get tangled together. That's what we do. Our bigger dog gets tied to the picnic table and the Shih Tzu gets hooked to the RV steps. Any flea/tick product can have side effects, but IMO the benefits outweigh the risks. As far as I know Comfortis is a good product. I use Frontline Plus and it still seems to work very well. But there are LOTS of reports of it losing its effectiveness in some areas. As long as it continues to work for us then I'll continue to use it.

RE: could anti flea/tick goo be too powerful for our dogs?

My Danes were all well above the weight of a 40 lb beagle. Not to get off on another tangent, but a 40 pound beagle would be *very* overweight. In general healthy weight beagles run from about 15 to 30 pounds (depending on whether they're 13 or 15 inch beagles). When I was with beagle rescue it wasn't unusual for us to get females a little under 15 (at healthy weight). So some of the testing could be on smallish dogs. My vet, who tends to be conservative, has always advised going for the lower dosage for dogs who are right above the cut off. My Brittany hovers around 47 pounds and the vet has always recommended using Frontline Plus in the 23-44 pound dosage rather than the 45-88 pound dose.

RE: Dog pooping in crate

What Dr. Doug said, separation anxiety. It's not uncommon, and especially not among rescue dogs.

RE: Scottish Collie

Got to be a good guard dog as well as a companion and watch whatever stock we get. I think maybe you need to narrow down, or at least prioritize, what you're looking for. 'Cause that's a lot to ask for in one dog. Are you sure you want a guard dog as opposed to a watch dog? Are you prepared to put in the time and effort training and managing a dog with guarding instincts? I would say a livestock guardian dog best fits what you want, but one of them is going to be much more interested in protecting livestock than protecting you. So . . . prioritize. RE: A very bad day

I'm sorry. As much as we all love our dogs, sometimes it just plain stinks when they do what their instincts tell them to do.

RE: Any recent Visits to Lake Myers in Mocksville NC

It's been quite a few years since we've been through there, but at that time our impression was pretty much what everyone else has already said -- lots of permanents, run down, not well laid out at all, not for us. They'd have to level the place and start from scratch before we'd consider staying there.

RE: Pet Couch Covers

We have over the years up to 5 standard poodles at a given time on our home and MH leather furniture. Our home couch is over 10 years old, has never been covered with anything except the poodles :) it still looks like new. Our MH is ultra leather, because it is a cream colour it needs to be wiped down regularly but we do not cover it. We have a few fabric pillows on it as the dogs like to use them as head rests. So far no holes, no scratches. We used to have a cloth one. Ditched it right away and replaced it with the leather. Would never have anything else with dogs. Pretty much the same sentiment here. Leather is great for dogs.

RE: Winston-Salem, North Carolina campgrounds?

We've ridden through Tanglewood a couple of times. Even the "level" sites appear to have some slope. There were a couple of sites that we didn't think would be a problem. Other than the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds, your other closest option is Oak Hollow Campground in High Point. It's a city-owned campground right on Oak Hollow Lake that has full hook ups and facilities. Some of the sites in the woods are sloped, but there's a flat graveled section, too. It's about a 15 minute drive up lightly traveled Highway 311 to Winston, so depending on what area in Winston you're visiting it may be just as close as Clemmons. Oak Hollow doesn't reserve sites, but it's usually not a problem except during one week in April and one week in October when the furniture market is going on.

RE: Camp grounk Mt. Airy North Carolina

Either Mayberry Campground or the Fancy Gap KOA are good choices IMO. For me which one would depend on time of year. If mid-June to mid-September I'd chose Fancy Gap, 'cause it's gonna be cooler and less humid up on the mountain than down in Mt. Airy.

RE: Solo RV'ers With Dogs

Also consider having the dog qualify as a "service dog". That way you can take into store with you. Very bad advice. It makes all dog owners look bad and makes life harder for those who have a true need for a service dog. The ONLY service dogs should be ones who've been trained and certified through legitimate service dog providers.
