RE: Comprehensive vs Collison Insurance

As Dtaylor said, "collision" is you hit something. "comprehensive" is something hit you. Collision claims mean, just like an accident, you'll pay more premium. Comprehensive claims normally don't raise the premium. If they said it looked like something hit the trailer that started the roof problem, it still should be a comprehensive claim. Unless you hit something with the roof and that's what started the situation. I'd suggest you make the insurance company correct their claim details or they will raise your premiums. Phil

RE: Just ordered a solar system for my TC

I'd be uncomfortable using tape if you have an EPDM roof. Couldn't the installation start pulling the EPDM away from the substructure? In the worst situation, not only would the solar panel leave the roof but it could take part of your roof covering with it, securely taped to the panel. I used rubber inserts with brass threads and stainless screws to attach the panels to our roof. I had to drill small holes (1/2"?) in the roof, insert the rubber 'plugs' that expanded to securely hold when the screw was tightened, attaching angle brackets with the screw that then held the panel. I do not remember where I got these parts, only that they were described as kits to attach solar panels to RV roofs. I've no doubt they are still available, I just can't say where. Phil

RE: Slide in / out problem

No, I don't think the motors are bad, just inadequate. Replacing them wouldn't help unless you were replacing with more powerful motors. My slide only does this when I try to bring it in. I have a rope tied to the couch frame and can pull the rope while I'm pushing the button and that's sufficient to bring in the slide. That's for those instances when I'm alone. Try having someone push the slide to verify that the motor needs "just a little more". Phil

RE: Slide in / out problem

Since the slideouts work, the fuses are OK. The automatic reset circuit breakers are working as Bill&Kate mentioned. I have the same problem with my slide. The motors installed are probably the least powerful that the manufacturer could find and as they get older, the motors don't get any stronger. Couple that with any mechanical resistance, add some weight for things stored in the slideouts, and they'll act like they are. To verify, have someone push on the slide while you try to move it with the button. Mine will move all the way with just one person pushing the slide at the same time the button is used. Without someone 'assisting', the slide will stop and start like yours. One time I didn't wait long enough between "tries" and I popped a slow-blow fuse that is in the power supply before the circuit breakers. Phil

RE: 2001 Ford F-350

The 2001 model year had a "mechanical diode" in the transmission (only year, IIRC). When it fails, you will be having the tranny overhauled before you go anywhere. If the tranny has been overhauled then that diode would've already been replaced and there shouldn't be further transmission problems. Do a Google search for "2001 ford mechanical diode" and you'll learn all about it. Phil

RE: Atwood 6 gal water heater leaking

Those valves are frequently the source of leaks and are easily purchased at any good hardware store. The last time I had one leaking, I was camping (of course) but found a new valve and borrowed enough tools to get it changed. Easier to change with the proper tools, I had only crescent wrenches and pliers. Phil

RE: Camping without unhooking from tow vehicle

Many times we don't unhook for an entire camping trip in one spot. There are two benefits and one drawback: Good: in short campsites, the combo takes less room than if the truck is disconnected and parked in front of the fiver. This helps more when we have another vehicle along and want to park it in the same site. Good: extra stability from the kingpin being hooked to the truck. We still put all the levelers and legs down (we, too, pull level). Bad: if you plan or need to use the tow vehicle Phil

RE: Atwood Wedgewood Oven Issues

Sure would be nice if the original poster would let us know if or if not any of the suggestions helped, or what actually did! Others may benefit. Phil

RE: Atwood Wedgewood Oven Issues

We had the same problem with our Atwood oven, although unlike yours, ours was like that from day one. Erratic tho, sometimes the pilot would go out partway through cooking something, sometimes not. We endured it for over two years then finally called Atwood. They claimed they had "just discovered" the problem and had we called a year earlier they wouldn't have known the fix. The pilot hole was too big (!). The burner would 'blow out' the pilot as it was cycling. Even though our unit was out of warranty, Atwood sent a new pilot assembly and paid our dealer to install it. It has worked fine since. Your model year 2003 could have been built with one of these same defective pilot assemblies (ours is 2001). I don't know the cost, but since time is important, replacing it might be worth a try. I'd doubt they would warranty a 10 year old oven but the part may be available locally. Phil

RE: A big thanks to Atwood, the gas hot water heater people

From the time we bought our fiver, the oven pilot would sometimes go out in the middle of baking something. I called Atwood and even tho the oven was 1/2 year out of warranty, they shipped a new pilot assembly to my dealer and paid for the installation. They said because it was involving propane they wouldn't let me do the repair. I removed the oven and drove it to the dealer (1 1/2 hrs each way) which was easier than hauling the trailer there. But I second the good words for Atwood! Phil

I'd bet a Krispy Kream doughnut to a dollar bill that the average age of participants on this forum is over 57. At 72 the only exercise I get is my fingers on the keyboard :) ...sometimes I think the most excercise I get is "phone tag"! Phil

RE: Small Crack in shower floor What do you reccomend I do.

I used to have a Prowler with cracks in the 'bathtub'. I could repair cracks but the problem wasn't really stopped until I braced underneath the 'tub' with wood and expanding foam. There was insufficient support. Phil

RE: Dealer problems

Three things may happen. 1. You get real lucky and the dealership will cover your repair costs, or at least a portion of them and everything will work out fine. 2. You will be out a little less than $900 and have learned a valuable lesson about buying from an unknown dealer a long way from where you live. 3. You have hit an iceberg and your Titanic is going to go down. The reason the title hasn't transferred and the registration is not complete is because the MH still has a lien on it. The dealer didn't pay off the previous owner's loan and has been floating the money. The repairs are the least of your worries. Best case, he is just unorganized and behind on his paperwork. Mid case, he has cash flow problems and is robbing Peter to pay Paul out of his sales, in this case you need to become Paul and bug the hell out of him. Worse case is he is making the monthly payments to the previous owner's bank, has no intention or ability to pay and is trying to steal as much money as he can before he flees the country. In that case, you are going to lose the motorhome, any monies you have paid and are going to be in a world of hurt. Lets hope this is an option one or two. Door number three is tough. I don't know how Oregon law would affect the outcome, but I bought a vehicle in CA from a dealer that didn't pay off the lien before selling it to me. According the investigation dept of DMV, this was a multi-million dollar fraud investigation of many, many vehicles that were fraudently sold by this dealer in just a few months before they went out of business. In CA, I'm the "interested third party" and eventually received title (it took over 6 months). Apparently the law favors the buyer of such a vehicle and puts the responsibility on the person that gave the truck to the dealer as a trade-in. Phil

RE: Bad Smog Pump

There are check valves that keep the exhaust from 'backfeeding' into the smog pump. If bad, you'll ruin the new pump too. Taking the belt off won't hurt anything other than emissions UNLESS one of those check valves is bad, then the hot exhaust will melt the rubber hoses like robatthelake mentioned. For the money involved, I generally just change the check valves if I'm changing a smog pump. They aren't expensive and have just as many miles on them as the pump. Phil

RE: Tripod for Direct TV dish

Been using the tv4rv setup now the last couple times camping. Works Great! An old-timer stopped by my site yesterday as I was setting the dish up, and said "Good luck with that, I cant ever get it aimed correctly." Was setup in 20 minutes. Aiming has been much easier for me since I put an app on DW's smartphone that shows exactly where, in the sky, the satellites actually are. It normally shows all the satellites, but I instructed it to show only the three I aim for (110, 119, 129). I then cover the outer two LNBs with foil, aim and fine tune for 119, remove the foils and I'm set (after running 'check switch' again, of course). Makes it much easier to locate where I want to place the tripod, too. The app I got was $20 but I think there are similar apps for less available. Phil Great idea! I would like to know what that app is. Is it for iphone or droid platform? Yep, posts after mine named Satellite Pointer Pro as the app, for droid phones. I couldn't remember. It's an app I discovered on the forum I frequent for Dish Dish forum . It was worth the $20 so I haven't tried any others. I'm tempted to buy one of the $220 meters so that I could fine tune the dish on all three birds but as much as we've been able to camp this year putting foil on two LNBs takes a little longer but doesn't add $50/night to our bills. It'd be nice if the cost of a fancy meter could be prorated over a hundred camping days but it's not gonna happen this year! Phil

I bought the heavy duty model from tv4rv.com a year ago and am very pleased with it. I had a small cheap one before that was hard to accurately aim and would blow over in the wind. Phil

RE: ERS service failure

VERY nice to see Zach's post. It's good that GS monitors this board (well... at least Zach does!). Dish Network has a team designated to monitor the internet for problems and then step up to solve them (the DIRT team: Dish Internet Response Team). You can PM them from the forum at Satellite Guys Dish forum I have had three problems attended to this way. I hope this is the wave of the future. WAY better than spending too much time on hold after dialing an 800 number. Although the initial problems weren't solved, the OP has determined that their membership is still of value. Phil

RE: Towing with trailer slightly nose high

I would drop it one hole. Why not? It's not like it takes hours to do. Slightly lower in the front will give you a touch better fuel mileage and better towing. So ya, give it a try. It took hours for me to do. Reese made this old slider (14K... I doubt they even market it anymore) where the top adjustment holes couldn't be used. I had to modify the side sections to allow the hitch assembly to come down to the lowest bolt adjustment. Phil oops. on edit. I see where the OP is using a receiver hitch.... MUCH easier to lower, I'd think. Try it!
