RE: Black Hills/Mt Rushmore area campgrounds

Rafter J is real nice park. If you want full hookups,I would go there. But if you can get by for a few days with just electric,I would go to Custer State park.Beautiful setting, lots of wildlife, swimming, vistors centers, etc.Go here for more info:http://www.sdgfp.info/parks/Regions/Custer/Index.htm

RE: June 2010 Laura Ingalls / Western US tour

Rafter J is a great campground,But I would suggest thinking about staying in Custer State Park. Many sites now have electric. The wildlife loop would be very enjoyable for your kids. They get to see Buffalo, praire dogs and wild borros.

RE: Edisto Beach State Park, SC

Far away from Starbucks and Walmart? Sounds like my kind of place. My wife always takes spring water along for cooking and drinking. She also freezes 2 gallons of water before we leave on a trip. We never run the fridge while we are traveling because I don't feel it's safe. So we put one jug in the fridge and one in the freezer to keep everything cold when traveling. It easliy lasts 8 hours. We then use that water in the jugs for the dogs.I can sympathise with your complaint on the sewer dump being so far away, but I could easily deal with the rest.

RE: Boonesboro State Park

We stayed there several years ago. The sites were fairly roomy and the place was generally clean. We enjoyed going to the replica of Ft Boonesboro. As I remember, there wasn't a whole lot else to do in the area and as mentioned, the quarry nearby generates some noise and dust. So while I probably wouldn't go there again,it was ok for a one time visit escpecially if you like history.

RE: South Dakota Trip for 2010

We did stay at Rafter J about 10 years ago. I believe we were in the Ranch camp section in the second to last sight because we wanted privacy. Rafter J is good, but if Custer State Park had electric hookups back then, ( they do now )I would have stayed there.
There is so much to see and do in Custer with the different drives and visitor centers. We also went to Wall Drug, the Badlands,Mt Rushmore,The Cosmos and Bear Country USA.Enjoyed them all. Have fun.

RE: I don't know WHAT to think -- may lose my trailer!!!

While it appears you didn't do anything wrong, there a few things to point out to others. First, you bought a trailer from a dealer in Ohio and got finacning through the dealer and a bank you never dealt with before. If you had purchased from a dealer in your state, and or borrowed from a local bank,it would be alot easier to sort this thing out.Plus, the dealer usually makes something on a loan they arranged which could make your payments alot higher. Two years ago my wife bought a new Jeep from the local dealer. They told her if she financed the balance through them, her payments would be $297.00 a month. I told her to check with our bank which she did. Payments would be $259 a month at our bank. Dealer then said he could beat that. We said no thanks, you had your chance. We went with the bank.
Just food for thought.

RE: Campgrounds with Marinas- East Coast?

Janes Island State Park near Crisfield,Md has a marina. Also, many Maryland State parks have a few sites that allow dogs on site. And if you look at the State park website, proposed rule changes for next year will allow dogs at more sites and I believe it will allow dogs at the State Park in Assateague.Check out the link:

RE: Common sense and the Flying J dump station..

I agree that some people just don't care about others. What Flying J should have done is put the dump and water at some other location and charge people to use it. After all, there is a cost to building the dump station and paying for water and sewer disposal.

RE: NFS Proposing 2 Eliminate Senior/Disabled Discounts

This is great. Just as I'm getting to the age where I could take advantage of this stuff, they start taking it away. First is this, then they're talking of taking money away from medicare, and in 2016,when I'll be 65, Social Security is supposed to start paying out more than it takes in.Figures.Guess I was just born at th wrong time!

RE: Cherrystone?

I have never been to Cherrystone, but there have been a number of negative posts about that campground. I prefer State or Federal parks and might suggest Kiptopeke State Park which isn't too far away from Cherrystone. They don't have a pool, but they have full hookups and cable, and a beach you can walk to.Another good place is Maddox Campground in Chincoteague. They do have a pool. You are within biking distance of Assateague National Wildlife Refuge where there is a very nice beach and paved trails to ride your bikes. You are also close to Mr Whippy's and the Creamery, both great ice cream places.Chincoteague also has a movie theater and several nice restaraunts. If it rains, take a short trip to Wallops Island Sapce Center. The kids will enjoy it.

RE: Health Insurance

Health Insurance rates vary alot fom state to state depending on what kind of mandates each stae puts on insurance companies. That's one reason why rates keep going up. Another is because of lawsuits. But to answer your question. HSA's ( Health Savings Accounts )can save alot of money, but normally you must pay the first $3,000 to $5,000 and then they take over. But it can lower your payments significanlty
( 50% or more ).
The other thing they could look into is CHIPS. This is a federal program administered by the states. Again,it can vary from state to state as to how much you can make and how much you can pay. It won't help the adults but at least they can get their kids insured.

RE: Flint HIlls, KS...anyone?

We satyed at Milford Lake State Park a few years ago. The section we stayed in had full hookups and the sites were pretty far apart. There were wild turkeys in the campground. http://www.kdwp.state.ks.us/news/State-Parks/Locations/Milford
While there we went to Ft Riley to see the Calvary Musuem and the First Territorial Capital. In Abilene we visited the Eisenhower Museum,The Museum of Telephany ( telephones),and the greyhound Museum ( Dogs). We also headed north to Marysville where there is an original Pony Express Museum and another one in Hollenburg. If you are interested in hsitory,I think you will enjoy all of them.

RE: Camping in the Area of the Blue Ridge Parkway

Well, tell me, I can get by for a few days with just electric.;)
Sherando Lake - From the north entrance to the Parkway, at around mile marker 18, head east for about 10 miles. Beautiful campground with 2 lakes, swimming beach, large sites with 30 and 50 amp electric and nice bath houses with showers. Water faucets through out each loop and dump station along the entrance road.

If you didn't want full hookups and could get by with electric only,I'd tell you about a beautiful Forest Service Campground with nice big sites not too far off the parkway.

RE: Thanks for Freedom, Veterans - thankks today and every day!

I am a member of the Womelsdorf,Pa VFW. For the past 4 years we have been doing a 6 mile walk between the 4 Veterans' Memorials in our school district. One of those is at the High School. This year, I invited any of the students who plan to go into the service to come forward and stand with the rest of us veterans. Only 5 students out of about 300 came forward. Less than one percent of the 300 plus million people in the US are defending our freedoms.Think about that. We owe them alot.
