RE: Texas to Colorado

Only a couple between Witchita Falls and Amarillo. I have stayed in Vernon at Rocking A which is grass and some nice trees with clean restrooms. The other one is Ole Towne Cotton Gin at Goodlett. Heard good reviews but never get past Vernon. We are usually coming from Shreveport and Vernon is about the right distance.
When we leave Vernon our next stop is Raton, NM and have used the KOA but prefer Cedar Rail

RE: Oil bath axle bearings.

If you read the whole article they mention that oil-bath hubs work good for trailers that are on the move a lot.
I presume you're referring to this paragraph: "For the average boater using oil bath hubs, condensation also becomes a problem when the boat is stored over the winter, or only used a few times a year. With many oil bath hubs, it is necessary to rotate the wheels every other week to prevent rusting and pitting of the bearing surfaces when the boat is in storage. That is a chore that most boaters easily forget or ignore."
I guess since it mentioned "boater" or "boat" four times in that passage I just assumed they were referring to condensation introduced as a result of submerging.

RE: Oil bath axle bearings.

Good info, but I don't think it relates much to a TT...the article you quoted seems primarily concerned about boat trailers where the axles are frequently submerged during launch/recover. Not sure about the rest of you, but my TT has not yet been in water that deep and I sure don't have any plans do so! :)
FWIW: I used to work for a heavy-haul trailer mfg. & we used oil-bath hubs exclusively on all the axles. No problems ever reported I recall & the maintenance is far easier! In fact, if Dexter offered a oil-bath hub for my 3500# axles I'd switch in a heartbeat!
Just my $.02!
If you read the whole article they mention that oil-bath hubs work good for trailers that are on the move a lot. If a TT sits in storage a lot then the bearings won't stayed lubed properly.

Dec 19th leave LA, arrive El Paso late that pm. Spend the night at the rest area in Las Cruces. Dec 20th leave Las Cruces arrive Ft Worth that evening. Spend the night in Weatherford. Dec 21st leave Weatherford arrive rest area in Lafayette La that eveing. Dec 22nd leave Lafayette and arrive Orlando that evening.
Dec 23 , 24 REST...............
Done it more times that I wish to count. Secret is keeping the left door closed.
I-5 to I-10 to I-8 to I-10 to I-20 to I-49 (shvpt) to I-10 to I-12 to I-10 to I-75.
HAMMER DOWN out west and on the Fla portion. From Shvpt to Laf Hammer down.
Going through Ft Worth adds 69mi to the trip. I don't think he can handle the extra miles.:B

RE: I-59 in Alabama?

It was still that way about a year ago and at that time they were resurfacing some areas. When it gets rough I use the left lane and watch for traffic approaching from the rear and move over when needed. Had a few pass me on the right and then they would also move to the left lane. I will not beat up my rig because the state won't fix their road. Thank goodness my state has finally fixed most of I-10.

RE: Thunderbird 3.0

Here is a link to Lightning Pre Release Right click Lighting.xpi and save it to your hard drive.
Open TB and under Add-Ons deleted old Lightning and then at the bottom click "install" and select the Lighting.xpi and install it. On the tool bar it shows "events & tasks" click it and select "calender' and it will open the calender in a tab and should show the information from the original calender.

Thunderbird 3.0

Anybody using it and how do you like it.
I like it opening a message in a "tab" instead of a new window.
I have two e-mail accounts and it combines the two in-boxes together but also has separate in-boxes as sub folders. Just a little feature I like. Does the same for Drafts, Sent and Deleted folders.

RE: Living back east, parking out west

You might check with nearby states (Texas, Colorado, Arizona) and see what they require. Could still store it in New Mexico. A lot closer if you need a yearly inspection.

RE: River trip down the Mississippi

Check out the Delta Queen !
The Delta Queen has been decommissioned. Because it is a wood structure it did not meet current safety requirements for overnight guests and for a long time was operating under an exemption from Congress. The exemption was not renewed.
Two other ships have also discontinued service because of financial problems. Google around, you may find something but nothing like the Delta Queen.

RE: Port Arthur/Beaumont TX area

The one on 69/287 is Access RV Park and is next to the airport. Web site looks nice but I have never stayed there. I had thought about staying there once but after looking at the map view again now I know why I didn't. Its is too close to the airport and has some warehouse type buildings next door. Might be OK for a night or two but I wouldn't stay for a month.

Only been once and stayed at Grizzly RV in West Yellowstone. My first choice for full hookups and very convenient to access all areas of the park. Check out the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone.

RE: Port Arthur/Beaumont TX area

I have stayed a few times at Gulf Coast RV Resort and it is nice. It is one exit from HWY-287 which is a 4-lane shot into Port Arthur. They have individual shower/restroom and are very nice. They have lots of fulltimers but no junks. For good meats check out Nicks's Grocery on 42nd street in Port Arthur. Homemade boundin, sausage, and stuffed meats. It is off of Hwy-287 just South of HWY-73.

RE: OOPS - busted my RAWR

Why are axle ratings used as the "hard stop?" It seems arbitrary, BUT the axle ratings are based on tire ratings, which are clearly printed on the tires. The tires are clearly the limiting factor.
I don't agree with that statement. My OEM tires are rated for max load at 35lbs. The door sticker shows 30psi and 33psi recommended. At 30psi the load rating of the tires is still higher then the AWR of the axles so clearly the tires are not the limiting factor.
