RE: Pickleball in the Rio Grande Valley

If you are a tennis player then Pickleball could be considered to be mini-tennis. If you are a Ping Pong player then consider it to be the King Cong of Ping Pong. If you've never played either then you start pickleball with no carry over bad habits. It's a simple game that's easy to learn. A lot of running is not necessary. We have a number of regular players that cannot run but still enjoy playing. If you go to www.usapa.org you will have all questions answered. There you will find newspaper articles, videos, rules, regulations and history. If you do a Google search for pickleball you will get thousands of responses. Regarding age we have played with people from 18 to over 80 yrs of age. One of the more agressive players we've played with is handicapped with one bad leg and an arm that can't be used. Beware....it's addictive. We currently play 7 days a week.

Pickleball in the Rio Grande Valley

We're currently camped near Mission, TX. There is a single pickleball court at the campground available to us on a limited basis. Unfortunately we have so many people wanting to play that it's somewhat difficult to get much playtime. We're talking to the Mission Parks & Recreation dept. in hopes of using one of their under-used indoor facilities to line out courts but that has yet to be decided. The sport/game is becoming a big deal in other parts of the country where senior citizens congregate so we're hoping to find other places to play in the Rio Grande Valley. If the P & R courts become a reality we hope to have people from other RV parks join us to play. Any info anyone has about other places to play will be appreciated.

RE: RGV Cold ??

Quote: "Pickleball tomorrow at the rec center two miles away. $10 for a lifetime membership. Play is with a fine mix of locals and Snowbirds."
Speaking of pickleball...where is this rec center you referred to? We're camped near Mission and have only a single court available to us at the campground. We often have so many people wanting to play that an individual might not get in but a couple of games in the 3 hr period the court is available. We're currently in talks with Mission Parks & Recreation to create courts in one of their little used indoor facilities. If that situation works out we'll have 3 to 4 courts to use but knowing where other courts in are active in the RGV would give us opportunities to visit around and play with other people. Any info regarding pickleball in the "valley" would be appreciated.

We are going back to Bensten Palm this year for a 3 mo. rate of 515 per mo. Great park with lots of fruit trees and many things to do with great people.
Let me know if you want any other info.

RE: Pickleball!

It's a weird name for a great game. We discovered it while wintering in the Rio Grande Valley back in January. We didn't check it out for a couple of weeks because of the name but once we started we were hooked. We decided that when we returned to Memphis we would try to get others interested. You can imagine our surprise when we learned it had been started there 4 or 5 yrs earlier. We've been workamping near Traverse City, MI for the summer and have played there irregularly. There are a couple of active groups in TC with several courts available. We're heading home in a couple of weeks but will spend a few days near Louisville, KY visiting family and the local pickleball courts. When an official court is not available we use a regular tennis court. I carry a chalkline and tape measure so we can pop a "kitchen" line when needed. We hope to find more or better courts available when we return to the valley in December.

Adding electric element to hot water heater

Has anyone ever added a electric element to their gas hot water heater and if so does it work well and was it much of a problem to install? We have a gas only Atwood water heater and found electric elements at a RV store but wanted to check with you guys to see if it is a practical thing to do.
Thanks in advance for your input.

RE: Need cooler climate for July-August

Just found out the monthly rates at Sleepy Bear are 700.00 per month.
If you want to come you might wait a week or two, it got down to 35 last night. Burrrrrr.

RE: Need cooler climate for July-August

Idon't know about weekly or monthly rates but I will find out and let you know. I know that in June it is 10.00 off the nightly rate.
It would be fun to see someone from Tn.

RE: Need cooler climate for July-August

Well, come on up to Sleepy Bear campground in Empire, Mi., three miles from Sleepy Bear Natl. lakeshore and lake Michigan. About 20 mi. west of Traverse City. High's for July and August around 80.
We are like you, wanted to get out of Memphis for the summer and chose this beautiful area with lots of things to see and do with great weather. Oh yea, no bugs, only lots of birds, turkey and deer.
Let me know if you want more info.

RE: Anyone paddle the Rio Grand?

Thanks everyone, I talked to the people doing the commercial trips and it sounds like that is the way to go as they said there might be trouble with the border patrol if we tried to do a trip on our own.
The trips are booked until March 3rd so I guess we will have to wait until next year.

RE: Plumbing Issue

No sir, not the flush units in the side of the tank. The part in question is in the line between the hose hookup and those flush units. The schematic has it labeled as a vacuum breaker. A backflow valve is installed to the outflow of that breaker. If my flush units at the tank are backflow valves as well I am unaware of that. The schematic does not list them as such. I did find that the campside faucet to which the hose for flushing was hooked would not completely shut off. This means that a trickle of water was entering the flush line. Don't know if that caused the problem but after disconnecting the external hose the vacuum breaker has done no more dribbling. I guess I'll have to keep an eye on it for another day or two and only hook up the hose when I need to dump the blackwater.

Plumbing Issue

We have a 2000 Pace Arrow Vision with the Sani-Flush system for the black-water tank. We have been camping in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas for about 6 weeks. The water here has a lot of mineral content. Yesterday we discovered water dribbling out of the top of the vacuum breaker in the water line to the S-F system. We located a replacement locally and replaced it. I also replaced the check valve that was in the line adjacent to and downstream of the vacuum breaker. Odd thing was that, even though water had not been reintroduced at the dedicated S-F external inlet, several drops of water came out the top of the breaker. I did turn the water back on to the rest of the coach and it was after that action that the water drops appeared on the vacuum breaker. I did not think the two systems were connected but may have been misinformed. I don't really know how the breaker functions. What am I overlooking or not understanding???

Does your RGV park have pickle ball courts?

We are staying at Bensten Grove and have been having a great time playing pickle ball and wondered if there were any other parks in the valley with courts.
For those of you that don't know what pickle ball is it's like table tennis on steroids or old folks tennis. You play on about half of a tennis court with big whiffle balls and a paddle bigger that a ping pong paddle but smaller than a tennis raquet

RE: Anyone paddle the Rio Grand?

Thanks to all that replied. We found an article in one of the newspapers regarding someone leading half-day canoe trips on the RG so we'll probably try that first. That will give us a chance to try the river and pick the brain of a local paddler.
So true about PFD's not necessarily saving lives but since I don't like to swim I feel better with one on and really needed it in the Ocoee one time.
Cute about girls in the middle of the river. When we were at Big Bend they wouldn't need one cuz the river was so low you could walk across it.

RE: Anyone paddle the Rio Grand?

Thanks for the info, we paddle whitewater and understand about currents and life jackets also that one should not paddle alone for safety reasons. If we put in at either of the places you mentioned where could we take out? We would like to paddle a few miles and not upstream.
