RE: Funny Town Names?

Banks, Oregon
isn't a funny name but just try to get OnStar to understand you do not mean Banks as in Bank America, Wells Fargo .. she asked "which bank are you looking for?" to which I replied the town of Banks, Oregon near Buxton, Oregon ..

RE: Need Recommendation on Ext. Floppy Disk Drive ..

Have been looking at Floppy Disk Readers for some 3.5 inch floppy disks which I un-earthed in storage ..
Can anyone suggest/recommend a specific brand ?
Walmart has a (I believe) brand called Sabrent, and of course the reviews are mixed ... in going thru boxes I found some 3.5 inch floppy disks with the director so I know what they are and would like to print some of the files for photo albums.
Anyone have a recommendation either on a brand or a place to buy ?
just bought this one from amazon. paired it with another item and got the free shipping. i'm very happy with my purchase.
Yes that is the one DH & I were looking at this morning ... also Walmart has one which can be sent to the store ... will have to looking into pairing it with another item for free shipping .. Thank you

RE: Too old to continue traveling ? Grown children urging ..

Keep doing what you love to do. I figure that if a person keeps active for as long as they possibly can. Then that increases your life (IMHO). You can plan keep traveling longer than if you go to a retirement home. You will know when the time to stop. Your children just trying to be helpfull, and that is very nice. My Aunt who lives up in Ridgeway Washington is 94 and still drives her car, and gets around pretty well. My plan is to retire at age 62 and plan on Rving for 10 years, after that we'll see. Good luck, and happy trails. Scott
Thank you for posting ... since we have looked at alternate places to live we have also been communicating more with our youngest daughter.
And yes, there has been a change .. we see that one of her concerns was when we are no longer a couple and either a widow or widower - what then ? And have y'all talked about what then ?
Since DH does all the driving and I cannot due to a medical problem, some of her concerns were well placed.
And yes, we have talked, but I think that us actually taking the time to go around to apartments, 55+ places, mobile home parks, etc. that she feels less stressful about the what if .. More time with her & the family plus more communication has worked ..

Looking for an e-Reader with games

I am endeavoring to find an e-Reader (Nook or Kindle) with a games option such as Spider Solitaire, etc.
Experiences or advice please.
Hubby has a Nook, and I have been thinking of getting an e-Reader for about a year .. we volunteer a lot and I use reading or playing games on my laptop as a form of relaxation (when weather not good for hiking).

RE: Is it just me? Or do you not talk about Health Issues ?

After I posted this, I called my youngest daughter and she said "Mom, you are not as "old thinking" as many people younger than you. oh, and BTW consider this my SAC, we are home." SAC stand for Safe Arrival Call - something this family does as a means of contact information.
I liked her telling me that we are not really old, and telling us we are more active and have better things to talk about than many our own age or older. That was so good to hear at my age !
And thank you about the hint to : "change the subject" - will try that next time.
Thank you for the hints and chuckles ..

Volunteers Needed in SE WA State

As a 2nd year volunteer at Ice Harbor Dam in SE Washington - am inviting y'all to come enjoy your summer in SE Washington State. I am posting this as a courtesy for Ranger Heather ..
Volunteers are needed in SouthEastern Washington State for the US Army Corp of Engineers Ice Harbor Dam Project in Burbank for the Summer.
We are scheduled to be out there for the summer, and would love to see y’all come to a wonderful area of Washington State with marvelous summers plus a great wine country area with Oregon just across the Columbia River about 30 miles away.
Plus for you Lewis & Clark Journey fans, we also have Sacajawea Park nearby.
Not real sure which type of Volunteers are needed at this time, however last year there were two volunteers in the Visitor Center, each trading off on others days off. One of the aspects of this post is giving tours of the Dam as well as the “meet & greet” of visitors.
They have a lovely Visitor Center with displays, short informative movies, etc.

Outside step/entry lights to light up steps .. help !

A few years back if I recollect correctly, there was a series of postings about exterior doorway lights ...
We found a trouble light fixture, work light, and timer for outside outlet .. not sure how to mount or hang the trouble light so that the steps are lit up sufficently for safety sake.
Before you ask why, well, our small chi is hesitant about going down the steps at night (almost acts like she is afraid or can't see adequately).
AND we thought maybe it would also assist us while parked in forest campgrounds where the lights are not as prevalent as here in the rv parks.
Any helps would be very much appreciated.
We have a 2004 Alpenlite Travel Trailer ...

Is it just me? Or do you not talk about Health Issues ?

Good evening everyone ... we went to the local Dairy Queen (DQ)at noon today and in the parking lot we met a couple (5 yrs older than us) - both of whom we had not seen for years - they were really better friends with DH’s parents than us even though they are only 5 years older than us.
Anyway we sat down to have lunch together as they initially had asked where we had been, but really didn't listen or show in anyway they cared ... they simply wanted to know why they could not get ahold of us when DH's folks died. They had seen the obit awhile back and wanted to know what DH's folks had died from.
They could only talk about their medical issues, surgeries, ills, insurance costs, and people we all knew as to their ills, pills, etc.
Do you also not enjoy sitting down with people who only have two topics they want to talk about - Medicare and Money (I have referred to these people as the M&M conversationalists.)?
I am not Ranting or Complaining, just wondering why people are not grateful for their health instead of having to tell people about their medical issues ?
I am grateful for my family, their love, my health, my energy level, and the ever lasting love of my husband. Don't get me wrong I have my "down days", but strive to keep smiling and love to see others smile.
I would rather make people laugh & smile than share my health or money issues.
Sorry this is so long a post, and hope y'all understand that the above is why it is so very hard for us to even consider going into a 55+ complex .. we love to volunteer and the people we meet are upbeat and enjoy their RV Lifestyle .. whether it be volunteering or Camping or ?
And have never talked outside of RV.Net about the postings here, but have been encouraged and enlightened by y'all and your sharing. And especially when I have had questions which y'all very nicely answered. Thank you very much for your helps.

RE: What Did You Do For Your Travel Trailer Recently?

Lots to do on the trailer today. Rinsed the water heater out, replaced anode rod, filled propane tanks, >
Couldn't find the anode rod so bought another one plus a spare .. so now have two spares after Hubby drained the water heater, and replaced anode ...
Also new tires ... Hubby kept saying "next time we move, will get the other two tires we need" .. well a year went by and finally I said "please just call the tire store and pay for a service call here at the RV park" .. we have are now the owners of a TT with four new tires .. two last year, two this year.
And us also .. if it gets warm and stays warm for a couple of days will be sprucing up the outside with a good wash & perk up.
We are full-timers but still these little "chores" need to be done routinely. Have already cleaned out the storage pass-thru areas.
So good to come here and see what others are doing to their TTs.

RE: Best SUV to pull a 19' Sportsman trailer

We have a 3/4 ton Suburban and love the bucket seats instead of bench seat.
For us that allows us to have a small ice chest, and box of travel books in the back seat.
AND we used to have a 1/2 ton Suburban, but so much better for us with the 3/4 ton with tow pkg.

RE: What does your RV forum name mean?

RoadXYZ - came from when we are out driving around after siting the TT, we like to go out on county roads or local scenic drives - we volunteer a great deal of the time and volunteer where we have not been before.
thus it matters not what Road we are on X or Y or Z ... since we have OnStar !
And can ask for directions back to the RV Park (have come to rely on that) !

Traveling across Canada & Northern USA .. Medicare issues ?

We are trying to plan a trip across Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, North Dakota and the Great Lakes States .. maybe even New Brunswick.
Has anyone planned such a trip knowing that they may have issues with filling their med scripts and/or medical visits, while on Medicare Supplement Plans and Walmart RX Part D ?
This trip may not be in our future .. our sons live in Toronto and Virginia .. we would like to fill in the "states visited map" on the side of our RV AND visit our sons at the same time.
We made this trip 2008-2010 time-frame before but missed going thru the states in the first paragraph. We didn't even consider the Medicare issue then as we were only in Canada for the month of July. Maybe it is because we are older now and have a couple of maintenance meds that we are thinking of the medical issues.
BTW we are not asking "should we do it" ; we are asking if anyone has done such a trip and if there are some issues we have not thought of .. ?
On Edit : we are full-timers but will be taking the 18' small TT we have instead of our "home TT" ..

RE: COE Gate Attendants needed in SE Washington

Hey- as long as you're here and are evidently in-the-know about Corps parks in that area:
Will Windust be open this year at all? I was really disappointed to find it closed last fall...
That is Ranger Heather's dilemma ... not being able to get firm committment from government as to their budget makes it difficult to know when/if some of the day use areas around Ice Harbor Dam will be open ..
Some of the Oregon Parks in the Eastern half are just now getting a firm handle on the budget from what I see.

RE: Mountain roads from Orland to Trinidad, CA

Think we have narrowed it down to : Bandon (volunteering in Oct) > first of November to Brookings (Oregon State Park)> Crescent City (not sure which park) then in December back to Brookings > then decide where we will go for the winter.
Due to the months we are going have decided that the wallet and weather should be ok for this journey.
Thank you everyone for your posts.

RE: SnowBirding fo Dummies

After 9 years of traveling we finally rented a UPS mailbox and simply email them when/where we want the mail forwarded to ... yes, there is cost associated, but know in the meantime the mail is sitting in a secure place.
This works for us.
