RE: Planning a long trip-need advice

Planning is part of the fun, but we don't make reservations because our plans are subject to change quite rapidly. We tend to take two hundred mile detours, and modify at all welcome stations, but the plans keep us from missing some interesting places. Not traveling interstates almost insures unplanned stops and interesting delays as well as traffic problems. Some days we stop after 100 miles and some after 250 miles. The trick is to be aware of what state you are in, most of the time.

RE: Here is a important HINT!...Walk around the MH at every stop

Not only do i walk around, but I check the tires, on both the MH and the towed, with an IR thermometer. A low tire will run hotter than the rest. Just my worry wart nature. With all of the precautions we take, I have still driven off with the satellite dish in the up position.

RE: Need advice on selecting the easiest route

Dick B gave you some great advice. The truckers Atlas will keep you out of trouble. It has state laws and contacts plus you know you can safely travel any orange road. Good Sam's routing service is great to keep you away from toll roads, low clearances and allows you to pick the routes you would like to take from interstates to local highways.

RE: Oil Change

I only use about half the oil you guys do, but I have an easy solution for handling the used oil and preventing spills. I use a five gallon plastic gas can and pump the oil out of the "catch" basin with a drill operated pump. One hose in the basin the other end in the five gallon gas can. When I'm finished, I just cap the gas can and take it to a local quick lube place for recycling.

RE: THINKING of buying a 2006 fleetwood bounder

We have an 06 Bounder 35E and love it. The only problems I've had were not the fault of Fleetwood. My previous coach was a Georgie Boy made by Georgie Boy not Coachman and my Bounder is as well done inside as the GB was. If something happened to my Bounder I'd replace it with another Bounder. By the way, Fleetwood has a superior maintenance facility in Decatur Indiana. I took my coach in for service because I was going to be in that area and was extremely pleased.

RE: Can you suggest the best route to traverse the southwest?

The way we plan a trip is to pick a highway that looks interesting (this year US2) and look for places along the route. Some may be off the route and back while others will be loops. a good atlas will show National Parks and monuments scenic drives will show you some pretty exciting roads. For a Southwest trip, I would look along I-10 and I-40 for places of interest since both of these are main corridors. Once you decide look for US highways that pretty much parallel the interstates, and that way ya'll will see some of the country. Whichever you choose, have a ball.

RE: Coffee On The Road - How To ?

Well, just for kicks, I don't drive 70, but I do stop every 1 - 2 hours. At that point we get out, walk around arrange snacks and drinks for the next leg, and check out the coach and towed. One of the best things I've seen for coffee is the one cup at a time coffee makers that fill a travel mug. Instant hot coffee ready to go and no spill problem. I do like the insulated carafe idea though.

RE: Camp Hatteras RV Resort & Campground, NC

Oops almost forgot. There is a restaurant named Basnight's Lone Cedar Restaurant on 64 just before you get to NC 12. Great she crab soup and the creme brulee is outstanding, and as a bonus there is an osprey nest on the same level as the dining room which makes for interesting eating.

RE: Houston to Altanta

Depends on the day of the week. Monday through Friday take I-10 to Slidell (Louisiana-Mississippi border) take I-59 to I20 in Meridian I-20 to ATL. Because of the traffic in Mobile, if traveling through there on a Saturday or Sunday, take I-10 to Mobile, pick up I-65 and get on I-85 in Montgomery. To bad you don't have more time to take a back road with a really neat Corps campground.

RE: New to this....

Any decent propane supplier can handle this problem if they want to. I have my system checked out by a local propane company, because my thinking is they are much more qualified than the RV dealers I've dealt with. Just a thought. Mine put on the extend a stay kit which I think he fabricated.

RE: Dry Camping Quandry...Help!

If you are going to add a battery, it is a good idea to by two or your old battery may draw down the new one and eventually cause both to fail. Also, keep a good eye on your fluid levels in the batteries. I check mine every couple of days. If buying batteries, think of two six volt golf cart batteries. If you are really thinking of boondocking a good bit, you may want to think of a solar panel. Probably is less costly than the generator, quieter, and more reliable. You may also want to invest in a Blue Buddy to get more mileage from your grey and black tanks. The grey usually fills up first so we use the dish water to flush which saves on grey capacity. We also use a soap product made for use with invalids which requires less water than a shower. Here's where you guys will get a good laugh. If you can't get the invalid soap, go to the drugstore and buy a feminine wash product, which is gentle and very effective. These products use a very minimum of water. Rinseless shampoos are adequate and save water. We also use more paper products when boondocking which lessens the dishwashing. Lastly, in cold weather try to get a site where the morning sun hits your RV. One last thought. Spend a winter in Quartzite and ask folks what they do.

RE: NE Indiana to Santa Rosa Beach, FL

Go on down to I-10 turn left and shoot to Santa Rosa via Pensacola. If you have lots of time to kill you can go through Bay Minette Alabama and pick up 59 to Gulf Shores across to Perdido and up to Pensacola, but I wouldn't.

RE: Camp Hatteras RV Resort & Campground, NC

The canoe trips are about four hours and start about 10:00 AM. The ones at Alligator River have more shade, but the Pea Island trips usually have a nice breeze. They are not strenuous, but are rather leisurely trips. Oh, don't forget the 1867 shipwreck sticking up out of the water by the Pea Island visitors center. There are also early morning bird walks at Pea Island with expert birders. They will even lend you a pair of really good binoculars.

RE: Weather Pro Awning Wind Sensor

I think I won't mess with the sensor any longer. The thing that really chaps my ... uh is that I wouldn't bet on the techs that have worked on it knowing what they are doing. It appears the real solution is to leave the sensor off and strap the rascal down plus adding a little extra weight to it.

RE: Camp Hatteras RV Resort & Campground, NC

Lots of things to do in the area. Check out the summer evening activities in Manteo (free). The surf is definitely up and teens love the idea of surfing even if its just buddy boards. Don't miss two outstanding National Wildlife Refuges, Pea Island just down the road about five miles, and if you are into wolves and bears, Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Both refuges offer canoe trips and both are worth taking. Get on the web and check this area out for things to do. Don't forget the Wright Brothers memorial. Great food, great people and of course great fun. Oh I forgot, If you are even a semi baseball fan you will enjoy watching a baseball game in Kill Devil Hills. The players and mangers are all college guys playing in a summer league. My wife who didn't like baseball loved it. Be careful, this area will make you want to move there.

RE: Visiting Kentucky and Tennessee

Berea Kentucky is a neat little college town with the old Boones Tavern. Also the Kentucky Artisan Center if you are interested in appalachia arts and crafts. We thought the town was worth visiting and wandering around. A couple of RV parks at the Berea exit.

RE: Weather Pro Awning Wind Sensor

I've been through two cables and two boards and was getting the beeps in August again. Has anyone strapped the awning down the old fashioned way with screw anchors and straps? I'm tired of messing with this thing.
