RE: Mt Ranier NP

I've been going to Mt Rainier for 40 years, in tent, pop-up, and fifth-wheel. Most recent visit was last August. It's a LOT more crowded than it used to be, especially on weekends when you get day trippers. The Ashford area, Parsdise and Cougar Rock have become extremely congested. You may have luck in the campground at the southeast end of the Park, near the Ohanapecash visitor center - the Seattle crowd usually does not go that far east.
Wildflowers are abundant on the trails around Paradise Lodge.

RE: Cruise control

My reason for NOT using cruise (Ford F350 6.4 diesel towing fifth-wheel) is transmission wants to downshift on slight upgrade. I find that I use less fuel by building up speed (using as little throttle as possible) before slight upgrades, letting speed drop on upgrade, then building up speed on downgrade. The idea is to avoid too many downshifts.
Even on flat-as-pancake Florida interstates, my truck tries to downshift when going up an overpass. As an experiment, I tried 100 miles with cruise on, then 100 miles with cruise off. MPG improved from 9.0 to 10.1. In hilly country, the difference is greater.

RE: Warped Attitude

For me, I would not give advice on, for example, maintenance, unless I know that I know what I am talking about, which would not be often. On the other hand, it's fairly harmless to give an opinion about Wally camping - I guess that is something we all have done.

RE: How long to get cold!

I'm like donn0128: I turn the refrig on the day before I put food in. And the food has already been cooled down in the regular home refrig. (But I may try skipnchar's method.)

RE: What method do you use to jack up your 5er or trailer?

I find that the jack from my Ford F350 has enough lifting power and, with its long crank handle, is a lot easier to use. (But I carry a bottle jack, as well.)

RE: No birds

Our Amazon goes everywhere with us. I see from your profile that you've got a a F530 crew cab; we have the same truck. We have a "travel cage" that fits in the back seat of the truck, secured with a strap. It's smaller than the bird's big cage at home, but Poco is ok with it if he can come out now and then inside the trailer. We also have a small dog, so the back seat belongs to those two while traveling.

RE: campground near Manhattan NY?

If the purpose of the trip is to visit Manhattan, and if you are doing late-night stuff, then consider that the Liberty Harbor-Manhattan subway runs all night. New Jersey Light Rail (between Liberty Harbor and subway) runs until 2 am. (or it did when we were there 3 years ago). The area seemed safe, plus there was a 24-hour security guard.

RE: alaska in July

For me, both routes are a must. The Cassiar takes you through some really remote country that may be intimidating to anyone not used to real wilderness, so you might want to go up the Alaska Highway through Dawson Creek and come down the Cassiar on the way back -- by that time you will be a old hand at wilderness driving.

RE: Workhorse "Reduced Engine Power"

One reason (there may be others) for Reduced Engine Power is engine protecting itself from overheating. Bad thermostat, bad water pump, low on coolant, slipping belts, ... .

Dog damaged screen door, and a fix

Here is how I hope to prevent our small dog from doing any more damage to the fifth-wheel screen door. At Home Depot, I found a piece of plastic size 24 by 48 inches. It's really designed to go into a large florescent lighting fixture, and is called an "acrylic lighting panel". It comes in two thicknesses. I got the thinner sheet -- would the thicker have been better??
I needed a piece of size 24.5'' wide by 24'' tall to cover the bottom half of the screen. To break the sheet, I first scored it with a sharp knife using a straight edge as guide. I attached the piece to the door using 1/2-inch sheet metal screws and washers. There was no problem drilling through the plastic.

RE: New to camping with a dog your advice?

We took our pup on its first RV weekend when it was about three months old and it did just fine.
I recommend training it to sleep in a crate, at least at first. Expect whining in the beginning. If you let the pup train you to let it always sleep in bed with you, what do you do after it has been outside in the rain?
Keep some dog toys in the RV; one less thing to remember to load before a trip.

RE: RV leveling with scissor type jacks/levelers

I carry three 2x12 treated boards of lengths 6, 5.5, and 5 feet. If the site requires two planks under the passenger side tires then there may be a big step from bottom RV step down to the ground. In that case, i use one 2x12 supported by two 12-inch 4x4 pieces to make it easier to step down.

RE: Learned something this weekend

I you forget and hitch up with rear stabilizers down, then it would be a good idea to unhitch before you try to retract the rear stabilizers. (And be sure that the FRONT jacks are down before unhitching! It's easy to make a mistake when you are discombobulated.)

Check those lug nuts

If you haven't checked those lug nuts on your trailer or motorhome lately, then better do it before that first spring trip.
I got my fifth wheel out of storage yesterday and parked it in front of my house to prepare for a trip leaving tomorrow. This morning, I noticed a lug nut in the street about 30 feet from the fiver. Who could that belong to? Well, it was mine!! One nut had dropped off right there in front of my house after a five mile trip from the storage site. Several other nuts were slightly loose and needed to be torqued.
I should check lugs before every trip, but I have to plead guilty.

RE: Nesting Cookware- Anyone use those?

Since 1998, we have used a set of four nesting pots with lids. They are teflon coated, but are not scratched after 15 seasons of use. We do not use them for frying.

RE: Can you Recommend GRAPEVINE TX RV PARK

Don't think that you are going to find anything in Grapevine that is not $$$$$. Vineyard has big sites, paved pads, manicured lawn, and you pay for it. Was there one night.
At a much lower cost, we have stayed at City of Lewisville campground. Sites are close together, no paved pads, but you get what you pay for.

RE: Springing along

I had one 3000 lb spring break on our fiver with total weight 12,000 pounds. Upgraded all four springs to 3,500 pounds, for peace of mind. This was a 2008 Hitchhiker II; spring broke in 2011.

RE: A Slide Room Who-Dunnit

Last spring, one of my slides would not come in all the way at the bottom. Problem was a bent metal "bracket". Your's doesn't extend all the way at the bottom; could "bracket" be bent the other way?
Anyway, my total cost for a complete fix, parts and labor, was $129.

RE: Mounting Tailgater on ladder?

Besides concern about driving with it on the ladder (vibration plus danger of low limbs), putting it up high would not solve the problem of parking under a tree. Overhead trees are the main problem for me with Tailgater. Also, climbing the ladder with one hand while holding the Tailgater with the other is not appealing.
To find a place away from trees, I have a 100-ft coax and a 50-ft coax in addition to the 30-ft coax that came with the Tailgater.

RE: hydrogen peroxide in fresh water tank

Drinking peroxide, yuk! Did that once by accident. I put some into a glass and rinsed my toothbrush. Forgot to pour it out. Later, I drank a mouthful from the glass. Just awful! Head and stomach felt terrible for the rest of the day. And that was the weak 3% stuff.
For sanitizing RV tank, peroxide should be ok. But bleach is a lot cheaper.
