RE: Type of Tow vehicle

2001 Excursion V10 2wd. 169000 miles. Got it a month ago, stepped up from 94 F150 Xtra cab. Tows SO much better than old truck. It will take me 5 years to hit 200,000 miles so hope its a good one. Pulling 27BH Jayflight, 6000lbs ready for weekend, little more on big trips.

RE: Hitch pin diameter question

I think Brisk has the right answer. I did some investigating this morning. The hole in the truck receiver does look wallowed out. Also, there are two holes in the WD ball mount shank, the larger looks wallowed too. I looked at the receiver on my daughters Explorer, it has two holes; one is 5/8" and the other is 1/2". Called local Napa and they only sell the 5/8" pin, can order the standard 1/2" or 3/4" agriculture type. Looks like my good deal Excursion is gonna cost a bit more. Im going to see if I can find a 3/4" hitch pin for agriculture equipment for this trip. Thanks again for the input.

RE: Hitch pin diameter question

I am using WD hitch. The ball mount used for boat and WD hitch shank(ball mount)are 2" square. I have a 5/8" pin that holds the ball mount into trucks receiver. The WD shank has a 5/8" hole and another larger hole. I havnt measured the larger diameter hole but looks like 3/4". My old truck had a 5/8" pin hole in the receiver, new truck has the larger size hole. We are only going about 45 minutes from home and all secondary highways. But if its not safe Ill go get what I need.

Hitch pin diameter question

Let me start by thanking the great folks on rv.net that have responded to my questions and gave opinions on my tow vehicle discussions. From how to help my F150 tow better to what to get next. I finally stepped up to a 01 V10 Excursion 2wd. Spent my first week of ownership cleaning it. Guess thats the trade off for a good price. Leaving tomorrow for our first camping trip of the year. Now my question. The hitch shank has 2 different diameter holes for the pin. My old truck receiver only had a small hole for the pin while my new truck only has the larger diameter hole. I dint notice until this evening. I only have the small diameter hitch pin. Will I be okay using the small hitch pin, in the small hole of the hitch shank, in my truck receiver that is a larger hole? I will get a larger pin but I wont have time before we leave tomorrow. Next question. I have a ball and shank to tow my boat, it only has the small hole, do I need to get a new shank with larger pin hole?

RE: Cat scale weight to choose new WD hitch?

Thanks for the help folks.
Steer axle no trailer 2780
Steer axle w/o WD 2460
steer axle with WD 2820
Weighed with 94 f150 xtra cab. 138 in wheel base.
I didnt think to take in the steer axle weight change. Kept thinking 1120, but that didnt make sense with the rule of 10-15% tw of loaded camper weight. 800 lb tw sounds more realistic.

RE: Cat scale weight to choose new WD hitch?

My thought was 1120 lbs also. I dont know what the current WD bars are. I bought them used, they are old and painted all black, no stickers, no name. The hitch is all welded and not adjustable. They happened to work great on old tow vehicle, needs adjusting to work on new tv. I have not got a new tv yet, but towed camper with same tv Im looking to get. Needed to be higher hitch and adjusted for sag.

Cat scale weight to choose new WD hitch?

Looking to upgrade WD hitch to Reese Dual Cam. All ready have the sway system, just needing hitch head, shank and bars. Trying to determine weight of bars. I dont know what the current WD bar weight rating is.Results from cat scale.
Drive axle with no trailer 2740
Drive axle with trailer and no WD 3860
Drive axle with trailer and 3320
current WD system set up
Trailer weight was 5750
So would the trailer tongue weight by 540lbs or 1120lbs? Should I get the 600lb, 800lb or 1100lb bars?

RE: Expedition, Suburban or Excursion?

Thanks for all the input! Im going for a 3/4 ton suv if I can find the right one. I want the Ford, wife the Chevy. Guess we will just have to find some and go try them out. Need a buyer for current TV before I can buy some thing else. Still have 29 days until first camping trip of the year, only time will tell what will be pulling the camper down the road.

RE: Expedition, Suburban or Excursion?

Thanks for the input so far. Gasser is the only way we will go. I dont like working on diesels when Im getting paid to do so, sure wont like working on one for free. Ive brought up the van idea a couple times but my wife is not a fan. I drove my daughters explorer for a few months year last and we really like the suv platform. Also add that whatever I get will be my daily driver. Less than 1000 miles a month. I know 3/4 ton will give me the best towing of our options, but cost of up keeping 3/4 is more than 1/2 ton. And I know that the 1/2 ton Burb can pull fine. Could have made the trip to the beach even better if I could have dialed in the hitch better.

Expedition, Suburban or Excursion?

We are in the process of looking into a SUV for a newer tow vehicle. Family of 4 with 3 small dogs. Towing an 04 Jayflight 27BH. 30 foot ball to bumper. Loaded weight is 5600 but had maybe 400lbs of stuff in truck bed that will be put in camper when towing with suv, so make camper loaded weight at 6000lbs when towed by suv. Current tow vehicle is a 94 F150 extended cab(138in whl base), 5.0l, 4x2, auto with 3.73 gears, fiberglass shell on bed. 11500 lbs truck, camper, gear, ready to camp. Current TV gets us to the campground and back but struggled bad going to Cherokee,NC. Works hard to stay 60-65 on interstate. We borrowed a 2001 Suburban LT 1500 4x4, 5.3l but dont know the gear ratio. Used it to go to the beach. The burb handled the trip on interstate much better than f150. More power, better brakes and more stable. So these are the only TVs Ive used with this trailer.
We are looking at 2000-2003 Expedition 5.4l, Excursion 6.8l or Suburban 1/2 5.3l or 3/4 ton. 4x4. I know the Excursion and 3/4 Burb is more than enough to do the job plus more. We have used the 1/2 ton burb so I know thats doable. What about the Expedition? It seems to have the shortest wheelbase, and lowest amount of power. I really want an Excursion but wife likes the Burb. And for the money we can spend, we can find 1/2 ton Suburbans in better condition than Excursions, 3/4 Burbs rare around here or out of range. With my camper, do I really need a 3/4 ton to be happy towing? Is an Expedition enough to get the job done?
Sorry if long or if left info out. I know a lot has to do with the hitch, the way its loaded ect, to get good ride. Just looking for opinions from some that have towed similar camper with differant TV option listed. Thanks.

RE: Expedition/Navigator Air Suspension Squat Question

Ive installed many Suncore products without problem. From replacement bags to changing air suspension to standard suspension. Good products. Rear springs are easy to change but the fronts can be challenging.

RE: Greenville to Murrells Inlet

Thanks for the input. The 17a route out of Summerville is the way my fishin buddy goes when he fishes Georgetown(about once a month). Thats why I was looking at that route. I think Im leaning towards Hwy521. We dont go to the beach very often(3rd time in 20years) so it would be nice to see something other than interstate road signs. We are going to HBSP too. Hope the storm doesnt hurt the fishing, my daughter really wants to catch some salt fish.

Greenville to Murrells Inlet

Trying to figure best route to Murrels Inlet SC from Upstate SC. Ill be I26 to Columbia but just cant decide from there. Have opinions from friends but none pull TT. My first thought was I26 to 17a in Summerville, but google maps shows that as being about the longest of options. My second thought was I26 to I20 into Camden then Hwy521. Also have votes for I20 to Florence then Hwy 501 to 17; and Hwy 378 from Columbia to Conway. Dont plan to stop anywhere but bathroom breaks, (gas if needed). Any opinions welcome, thanks.

RE: Opinions on Heartland MPG 186T

Thanks for the input. I know he has looked at a couple brands, not sure which ones. Ill pass along the other suggestions to him. They have talked about tear drop campers for a couple years now, think he likes the shape. I think it looks like a nice unit. Thanks again everyone.

Opinions on Heartland MPG 186T

A friend of mine is looking at small or teardrop campers. He is very interested in the Heartland MPG 186T. Anybody have experience on these campers? Are they well built, do they have good customer service? Would you recommend one to a friend? Thanks for any help you can be. They are tired of tent camping and ready to steep up.

RE: Repossession?

We bought a repo unit, but from a car/rv lot not the bank. He got it from a bank auction. Main problem was it was filthy. Crayon drawings on the walls, socks under mattress, small toys in the heat ducts. People just didnt take care of it. It cleaned up great and we have not had any problems with it. We paid just a little less than comperable used units. Discount for the dirt I guess.

RE: Cover or not to cover the TT

We have used the Adco brand for 2 years now. It has a couple small rips, one from a trim piece I didnt cover but the other tore on a smooth corner.(may have pulled straps too tight) We started using the cover to comply with HOA "approved covering". I will buy an other when this one gets worse. I can put it on and off by myself in 15-20 minutes. If we go a few trips a month, I leave the cover off in between. If its more than 3 weeks or so, I put it on. I put a ladder on each side of the camper and unroll a section then move the ladders. Takes more time to protect the sharp edges.
