Some of the hydrometers sold in stores aren't very accurate. I had one that I had to throw away. I replaced it with one I got at a battery company which was about three times the price, but I trust the readings.

In some national forest campgrounds the water is supplied by a well with a hand pump. I use 6-gallon jugs. It is a bit of a challenge to get the stream of water accurately into the spout of the jug, especially if you are pumping and holding the jug at the same time. Don't use a funnel, it just slows down the flow of the water. Some people use electric pumps to get the water from the jug into the gravity fill port, but I do it the old-fashioned way.

I use Rhino ramps rather than jacks. They seems more secure to me. I don't have air though so I don't know how that would affect the use of ramps.

If a battery isn't holding a charge as well in terms of its voltage, then it's not a good idea to wire it in parallel with stronger batteries because the difference in voltage creates a differing potential which will cause current to flow from the stronger battery to the weaker one while the batteries are sitting.
However, you say that the older battery still holds a full charge, which I take to mean that it reaches a full charging voltage of around 12.6 volts. In that case, it does no harm to use the battery to increase your amp hour capacity during discharge. If it has different, maybe less, capacity then your CG's, the different sets of batteries will discharge in proportion to their differing capacities. I have several banks of batteries with differing capacities. I don't wire the batteries directly in parallel, however, they are in separate compartments.
Charging, however, may be a different story. The gel cell may have different charging voltage requirements than your CG's, so charging them together from the same converter may be a problem. The gel cell may also have a different resistance than the GCs, so it will grab a different proportion of the charging amperage. In other words the differing batteries may not charge evenly. I partly solve this problem by isolating my separate battery banks from each other during charging with relays. I use a separate charger for my AGMs.
The fact that you are also charging from solar panels adds another complication to using different batteries if all of them are tied in to the same circuit from a single controller.
But my main point is, if you have an additional battery available, why not use it? You can always charge it separately.

When discussing tires it is easy to be stuck in the past when Goodyears were Goodyears, Michelins were Michelins, made in America was made in America and China bombs were China bombs. The world has become a much more complicated place and those ideas just aren't true anymore. No matter what brand tire you buy, it is the DOT code and not the brand that tells you where the tire was made. And it is the factory where it was manufactured and the workers who made it, not the country, that determine if it is a quality tire.

You can get a copy of the original factory P chassis manual from Bishko Books. Very helpful but not cheap. There were a lot of variations in the actual builds, however, so any project like yours is going to involve some detective work. A wire tracer/tone generator really helps when you are tracking down fused circuits. Good luck with your repairs.

Having a helper pour some water down the vent stack while you check around the bathroom and the blackwater tank can help you locate a leak in the vent. You should also check the pipe from the flange down into the tank. Mine was cracked at the top of the tank and finding that cured my odor problem. Good luck with your repairs.

I had a 1972 Winnie which was wired in the same way that your customer describes. Things that were operated from the dash like the windshield wipers, washer fluid pump, lights, horn, turn signals etc. were always powered and could be turned on without the key in the ignition. I always wondered about that. But that shouldn't drain the battery. If those things are all off and the battery is still draining then there is some other parasitic drain that needs to be tracked down. You could take a multimeter and start checking circuits, the electrical systems on those Winnie's aren't that complicated. The easy way to take care of it would be to install a battery cut-off on the chassis battery.

In the Moab area I would stay in Moab. My favorite RV resort is Moab Valley, mostly because of the pool and hot tub, although it is a very nice park otherwise. My favorite places near Moab are Dead Horse Point, Arches and several bike trails, but I don't know if you are into mountain biking or not. Have a great trip!

Do you like to fish? I was just "boondock" camping up at Antero Reservoir a couple of weeks ago with my son and we had a nice time. No water available except from the lake, and it is very open terrain. But the fishing is good and the scenery is beautiful.

Some people do like to go around Chicago on 294. I accidently exited off 90 in a construction area once and was lost for a few scary minutes in South Chicago. Otherwise the natural route to Sturgeon Bay is 94 to 43 to 57, unless you want to make a detour for some reason. (I'm a Wisconsin native, Colorado transplant.) Sturgeon Bay is a great area, what are you going to do up there?

I use a knifeblade for my chassis battery. But for my house battery banks I have 50-amp resettable breakers that I also use as battery shut-offs. This might be an idea for you if you have no main 12-volt breaker. You can get them at car stereo-type places. That way you can have the protection of a breaker and a battery shut-off with one purchase.
