RE: Why Is The USPS Losing Money?
Sounds like they are going to make money, now the package will have to be shipped a second time, so twice as much profit.
Sorry, but your right.
The U.S. Post Service
was established in 1775 - they've had 234 years to get it right; it is broke,
and even though heavily subsidized, it can't compete with private sector FedEx
and UPS services.
For the confused folks who think the USPS receives subsidies from the taxpayer/federal government, the USPS has been self supporting since 1982. When they lose money they sell bonds for future repayment, just like any other major corporation. The USPS was in the black as recently as 2006.
Dutch
Don't they have a monopoly on first class mail and did they have to purchase their facilities on the open market like other corporations? Aren't their competitors regulated? Is this not an implicit subsidy? I think I read that the issue is complicated.
RE: Senior Discount; opinions, please
If they ask me if I am a senior, I tell them my age. If they want to give me a discount I let them. I would sooner go straddle a bull in a chute and wait for a bell than ask for favors based on my age.
RE: Believing what you read
OK, so back to the original editorial, :B. The article probably was biased as the plaintiffs have every reason to make noise at this point and the respondents are wondering what to do next. The journalist probably gave them the opportunity to speak up, but they have no doubt been told to keep very quiet.
They should have printed the pics. :B
RE: Believing what you read
I have stated as much in a courtroom during jury selection in front of a judge, the investigating officers, the defendant, and for the edification of the prospective panel. My "expertise" is common knowledge.
RE: Believing what you read
I can tell you first hand that much of what you read or see in the media is at least partially wrong and in some cases completely wrong.
The same applies to lot of police reports, yet they prevail in the court of law and people are judged by them.
How do you suggest to solve the problem?
I don't share your views.
Of course you do not share his views. A prosecutor believes what he is told by the investigating officers while a defense attorney believes that the investigators are liars by profession. Our system of justice is based on an adversarial position and by stating that you are a member of one of the adversarial groups you disqualify yourself and then post your opinion. Apparently, you feel that your status gives you credibility. Not really.
RE: Question about grand kids...
Geez Louise, talk about an open-ended question. I think you're approaching this bass-ackwards. Have her decide what interests her. I went into electronics because I had an apptitude for it. After 35 years in high tech, I realized I never really like it and became a photographer. Don't get me wrong, my military training, college degrees and experience got me good jobs and paid the bills for a long time so I can't complain. But, bottom line, being unhappy for 35 years was a big price to pay.
Don't have her think about a specific job in the future but what types of activities interest her. Is she a detail oriented person or is she the type who has a million ideas and never worries about the details? Is she an outdoors type or does she sit in front of a PC all day? Does she like math and sciences or art and philosophy?
Giving her the right guidance could be the best gift you could ever give her in life.
Great post from my perspective based on similar experiences. Having been in both the Army and the Navy, but neither recently, I would have a preference and that would be the Army. More room to move out and to advance, with multiple specialties. But let her make the decision. One thing for sure, if she chose the Coast Guard, whatever she picked, she would be doing it and not making coffee.
Good stuff from you too Lyman, as usual. Good observations from my experiences.
RE: Kids send Marcus the lamb to slaughter
Wrace,
I like that. As a teenager we went to a freinds house. And got to eat hamburgers of the cow that stepped on my brothers foot and broke it. He was good.
OK. If a cow stepped on your brothers foot and broke it, who are you talking about when you said "He was good?"
Be careful you don't milk any bulls. :B
RE: Fast food soft drink dispensers
But, in actuality, they are making the drink up the way that they like it, and are therefore not cheating themselves at all, if I get the gist of the responses. Not all of us are that concerned about how much soda pop we get I guess, or how much ice we use. There is a difference, my mother used to say, between funny and peculiar. :B
RE: Pirates of the Caribbean 4
I agree completely, Milt. The problem is that the character is not deep enough or interesting enough to amuse and surprise in a second, much less third, film.
Speaking of which - are you ever gonna update your blog? 8/19/2007???
True about the characterization, but the slapstick is really good. I thought I would have a stroke when they had him on the spit over the fire, and with his mincing down the beach after his escape, I barely avoided being thrown out of the theater.
You got me on the blog. I have written a couple more education things. I will dig them up and post them. :B
RE: I'm being phone spammed!!
Get a Tele-Zapper
Not too expensive and will kill any computer dialed call
http://www.telezapper.com/
I have had one of these for a couple of years now, since I first heard about it here. It works very well. I almost never get a call.
RE: Pirates of the Caribbean 4
Johnny Depp's character in Pirates and sequels is what makes the movies what they are in my mind. Other than playing Queen Elizabeth, I think that this is the best possible role for him.
RE: Tried to be a "Good Sam"
Me too Dutch, reminds me of Winnetka, Illinois. I ain't saying put your house number up, but I do want people coming through this way to know where I am in case they want to go out and eat or need to borrow a wrench or a honking big diesel truck if they need one. :B
RE: Tried to be a "Good Sam"
Stressor,
Just looking at your categories means essentially nothing. Nothing in your categories reprsent statistically sound empirical evidence. I see nothing to support any notion that those that opted to answer NA's or those that took the time to let folks know their residence, names, occupations, etc. has any bearing on trust or paranoia. This is an RV website forum and I suspect those that did not fill in all the blanks felt that supplying the info had little to no value regarding RV's and RV ownership. An RV is an RV regardless of who owns it, regardless if the person is in Alaska or Florida, or they are retired, student or any profession in between. Trust and paranoia have nothing to do with it. Ask some of those that chose not to respond to every question and see how many said they were paranoid. If they were truly paranoid they would not even weigh in on the forum. Almost nobody uses their real name, is that paranoia too? Of course not! You are entitled to your opinions here and to that end I enjoy the discussion.
So let's continue the discussion.
A couple of things that could be easily checked, had you taken the time to do so, would be your statement that "almost nobody uses their real name." You might want to go look at some profiles and maybe do a tally. You will find differences between ATC and the posters on other topic headings on this forum, and what you say applies 100% on the FOX forum.
While the sample size was small, and representative of a self-selected group, the result was worth of noting I thought. We are not talking about paranoia, we are talking about agreeableness and openness to experience. Paranoia was how we lived in the good old days you mentioned. "It reflected America, especially the heartland, during that time. People were not afraid of each other, not afraid to walk at night, and not afraid to strike up conversations in parking lots as the OP tried to do with the person he offered to help." There was a communist behind every tree, and we hid under our desks in duck and cover drills. Some of us still walk at night, strike up conversations everywhere, and offer help whenever we see an opportunity, right here in Mayberry.
The stories we tell reflect who we are, the preferences we espouse reflect who we are, and nothing we say or do does not indicate who we are. That N/A says more than you think it says, and it shows up everywhere.
